How To Clone Your Fans With Facebook’s Lookalike Audiences
Targeting, in the simplest sense isn’t all that difficult. You just ask yourself where the people who would like your kind of music are hanging out, and then jump in front of those people with an ad. But answering that question is often more difficult than some musicians might initially think. Fortunately Facebook recently rolled out something called “lookalike audiences” which promise to help take out much of the guess work.
The way it works in a nutshell is that Facebook allows you to upload a list of email addresses, user IDs, or phone numbers and target people with similar demographic profiles.
Facebook does this is by essentially cross referencing those email addresses, IDs, or phone numbers with user accounts in their database of over 1.1 billion people. They look for certain demographic patterns and generate an audience of people that match those patterns. They then allow you to select your new lookalike audience as a targeting option.
This means that you can upload your actual music buyers into Facebook and let Facebook take all of the guess work out of the targeting process and help you expand your reach.

I read they needed 500 emails as a minimum. Glad you could work w/ 300.
John,
I was working on this this morning and noticed that there is a minimum amount of people that you need to upload on your list. I started with around 50, Facebook said it wasn’t enough, then 120, again wasn’t enough, finally I went to 300 and that did the trick. Granted the list was a little dilute at that point but I figured it was better than nothing.
Yeah, there is a minimum. Facebook states that it’s 100 as far as I know but it may be that there needs to be at least 100 matching profiles, as apposed to just email addresses. My presumption is that without a big enough sample they don’t have enough info to find patterns.
Hello John, thanks for sharing. This targeting sounds quite amazing! Soooo, what are the implications of uploading our fans private details to Facebook? Have you heard of how they are using the uploaded info?
Hey Mat,
As far as I understand there are no security or privacy issues at all. To my knowledge FB is simply using the info to cross reference against their userbase. They are not then suddenly emailing people or anything like that. That would actually be illegal. It’s an understandable concern though.
Thanks, John – didn’t realize that Facebook had added that option. Interesting..
Yeah, there are a couple of unique opportunities there with custom audiences, such as essentially re-targeting your existing subscribers. They are adding stuff all the time so it will be interesting to see where they go with it.
