Growing Your Fan Base With Free Social Media Strategies
If you’ve ever gone through any of my training programs then you know that I’m a huge fan of paid advertising. I think that it’s an invaluable tool for musicians who want to get their music in front of a large number of people very quickly.
Having said that, it’s not for everyone. Some musicians just don’t have the budget, and others are simply not at a place in their career to be able to take on the financial risk that comes along with paid advertising.
Fortunately there are many free traffic generation strategies out there for musicians who are not quite ready to try their hand at paid advertising.
Enter Rick Barker…
Rick Barker is music industry veteran. He’s the former manager of Taylor Swift, and he’s the author of “The $150,000 Music Degree“.
In episode #34 of the Music Marketing Manifesto Podcast, Rick joins us to talk about ways that you can use sites like Facebook and Instagram to grow your fan base and generate income from your music – for FREE!
If you’re looking for the link to the FREE webinar Rick mentioned on the show, you can find it here.

Does Dawn Byer sing all her own stuff? Is it songs that are recorded already ? New stuff? Obviously no covers .
Thanks for the great show! My job now is to be a better friend online and be more available to the tens of fans I have amassed.

Thanks Brian! Glad you enjoyed it
Hey John great podcast I love this one but here’s the deal when you click on the link to go to Rick’s webinar his clickfunnels account has been paused so it doesn’t actually allow you to register and watch the webinar. That’s what’s up right now do you think you could let him know that would be great !
Hi Jake, this was a time sensitive webinar. It is now over. Sorry for the confusion.
Okay I get it I’ll look him up online and see if there’s any other instructional videos from Rick. Thanks again for the great content.
Great content, as usual, John. I’ve seen less people doing FB Live stuff…is it really still a pretty going concern?
Hey Michael,
Glad you enjoyed the episode!
As I sort of touched on, this isn’t something I personally do. It’s really more of Rick’s strategy. But I know it’s something he does with success, and I thought he gave a pretty good example of one artist who generates 6 figures with the approach. You’ll have to give it a go and see how it works for you
Thanks for listening!
Wow. My initial foray into FB Live (I had never even done it before) netted pretty solid results. Even fumbling around and with less than stellar audio, new fans showed up, got a fair amount of engagement re: future live shows and existing videos. I think I’ll put the tip jar out next time.
Thanks for this interview, John.
That’s awesome man. Great job!
Thanks John this is fantastic information I am feeling so empowered after listening to Rick great stuff brother keep up the great work the Almighty blessings keep on coming your way fam ONE LOVE.
Thanks Ken, glad you enjoyed the episode.

Another great episode John! Loved the story Rick told about the artist who is doing so well with the live “tip jar” strategy. Great stuff as always. Thanks!
Thanks Tara. Glad you enjoyed it. It was great to finally have Rick on the show!
Great strategies true that there is so much happening in social media its hard to keep up. John i havent hear you talk about Youtube adds im curious if this would be worth the paid advertising?
Hey Tom,
In my experience, Youtube ads are not the best bang for your buck in terms of ad-spend. Nor is is video advertising in general (for most artists). But there are exceptions to every rule.
As it happens, I have been testing YouTube ads for the last few months, and so far, have not been able to beat the results I get with Facebook and Instagram. But if I do you’ll hear about it
