Hey John, can I get your feedback on my blog supporting emails. These have not performed well previously. Some direction would be very helpful.

Recently I turned off confirm-opt and I noticed a drop in opens. The first email got 56% opens and when I had it turned on the open rate was over 80%. I think I will just leave confirmed opt-in on in the future. Even so I think there is room for improvement here.

Targeting is men 25-65. Texas blues and Johnny Winter.

Subject:

I didn't sell my soul

Hey {!firstname_fix},

Hopefully by now you have had a chance to listen to those free tracks I sent you. Thank you for taking the time to listen to them. It means a lot.

I wrote this blog post on my site about the time when I went out to the famous crossroads where the legend Robert Johnson sold his soul. Something strange happened to me over there that you are not going to believe.

Here’s the link: http://www.johnyriley.com/the-crossroads

It still gives me the willies even to this day.

Talk soon,

Johnny

PS Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any question, comments, or just want to say hey. I would be glad to hear from you.

The stats are 26% open rate and 10% clicks.

Here's the second email.

Open rate is 23% and 10% opens.

Subject:

Stricken By The Blues

Hey {!firstname_fix},

I hope you are having a good week. Isn’t it strange that the blues has so much heartbreak and pain in it and yet you can’t help but feel so good when you listen to it?

Sure it’s not all about the hardships in life. There are some happy songs too. But the hardships of life are what developed this style of music and may be why it is so powerful.

For me it’s as good as any kind of therapy. The blues is an anesthesia for the broken hearted and alienated.

Everyone has their own struggles to overcome in life and may feel alone or even oppressed at times. This is why everyone can connect with the blues. Because it is so relatable.

By listening to the blues you learn that you are not alone in your suffering because life is full of hardships and this is something we all share in.

These hardships also have a transformative power to them. They build stronger characters.

I wrote a blog post on my site that I want to share with you. It’s a story about how the blues can help even the most lost of souls.

I left something there for you as well 😉

Talk soon,

Johnny

Hey Nicholas,

Man, I spent 40 minutes replying to this only to have my computer glitch on me and I lost the entire message. forgive the fact that I don't have it in me to retype the entire thing. But feel free to bring this up in next week's coaching call so I can elaborate.

The short version of my response is that if the open rate on email #1 was only 56% then 25% is not that terrible. It's not great but it's not terrible.

But the biggest thing I think is missing is that the copy is still falling a bit flat and it's not provoking enough curiosity.

For example, instead of saying "I didn't sell my soul" which might sound like an artist integrity or spiritual issue, you could say something more like : I actually went down to the Crossroads with my guitar... this is what happened", or something to that effect.

And email 2 could be something more like "Why d you love the blues first name?". Just to make it more about them, even if you are ultimately telling Johnny's story".

I also thought the emails could be tightened up, especially the second one.

All you can really do is test. Sorry I don't have a more specific answer. It's just one of those things that is difficult to be precise about without spending an hour or two digging into the specifics of the campaign.

Hope that helps.

Hey John. Man that sucks lol No problem I will drop a question in next weeks Q&A. There is some good feedback here that I can run with for now.

I'm going to reset those campaign stats and turn back on confirm-opt in and this should bring them stats up. I was just a little concerned about an engagement issue because we are barely making sales right now. The weird thing was we were getting tons a positive feedback but still nobody would purchase. I just ran two promotions and made zero sales.

I recently went into our spotify account to check the stats and I think I found the problem. There is a steady uptick in streams starting September 2018 which funny enough is when we started promoting the band with MMM. I've gone and requested everything be removed. Hopefully that's the issue.

Thanks for the feedback John.

Hi Nicholas,

That's a very common issue. There is no reason for anyone to buy the album when they already have it. You can still leave some music in there, just not all of it (if you hope to make sales). I would leave "the singles" so you can still experience engagement and generate some revenue.

Question for you... Is there any chance you might be willing to help me out with something? I'd love to see a screenshot of that uptick in Spotify, as well as a screen shot from within Aweber showing me your uptick in subscribers. You can get that in reports. It would be really awesome to have those conflicting graph charts to use in a blog post. I can totally blur the artist name out of it if you like.

If you're not sure how to do that just email me at john@www.mmmanifesto.com and I can explain. Very keen to see that data on the screen.

Hey John,

No problem I will send you that info.

I ran into a problem while trying to get our music off spotify. I'm not exactly sure how to do that. There isn't a way to remove it right from our profile that I could see.

The only digital distributor we are using is CD baby but that is not where it was uploaded from. I contacted spotify support and they wouldn't tell me how or where it was uploaded from so I'm on my own here. I talked to Johnny and he has no idea who put it there and how.

Is there another approach to getting it taken down? Unfortunately I can't run any more ads until the music is taken down and I'm very interested to see how that affects sales.

Hi Nicholas,

Normally it would come from CD Baby. The tracks you upload there would get passed to the streaming platforms. I'd start by contacting CD Baby (I'd call them) and making sure they don't control it. It would be unusual for an artist to be with CD Baby but the Spotify tracks to come from somewhere else.

Hey John,

This is a follow up question from todays coaching call and I wanted to get some feedback. I'm not exactly sure how to make an ad to test my new email subject lines. The issue is the headlines won't be in any way related to what they will find on my squeeze page.

Here's a few that I came up with so far:

I actually went down to the Crossroads with my guitar… this is what happened

My trip to the famous crossroads

If you want to get that hair standing feeling - this is the place to go

I want to get your opinion on something, {!firstname_fix}.

The second email:

Why do you love the blues, {!firstname_fix}?

What do you love about the blues, {!firstname_fix}?

The blues is an anesthesia for the broken hearted and alienated.

Obviously I wouldn't use the Aweber short code here.

So I'm trying to figure out how I can test those subject lines without creating too much confusion. I thought about doing a re-targeting ad as a kind of funnel support ad that way everything lines up and I can warm up my audience a little in the process.

How would you do this?

Hey Nicholas,

This lesson will show you how to test different text: https://www.mmmanifesto.com/in.....-creative/

I misspoke if I said you should run the traffic to a squeeze page. That won't make much sense, as you point out. You should send the traffic to the blog post. You can run the ads to your same initial audience that you are targeting for your squeeze page. I would do that, rather than targeting a warm audience, purely because a large audience will make the test easier.

Hey John,

I put together a sales email using the structure you recommended in CFM and I want to get your feedback. Just want to know if I'm headed in the right direction here.

Subject: Why is the blues still relevant?

Hey {!firstname_fix},

Why is Crossroads Of My Life an incredible merging of genres into a classic that could stand the test of time?

All of the blues masters of today have brought their own unique way of singing and performing the blues and in doing so have kept the work of those like BB king and Robert Johnson (to name a few) from being forgotten.

Want to know how Johnny Riley is making his mark with the blues?

Click the link below and get yourself a copy of Crossroads Of My Life and see it for yourself.

http://www.johnyriley.com/discount

In his latest album Johnny Riley brings an unapologetic straightforwardness when it comes to performing music with the intensity and directness of a seasoned blues artist.

The stories he tells with belting vocals are of broken hearts and shattered dreams - sung with a soulful delivery that is smooth and crisp.

Adding guitar riffs that build to melodic peaks with the style and intensity of a blues rockstar completes this duo.

http://www.johnyriley.com/discount

If you act in the next 72 hours you can get a 30% off discount on the album. However this is a limited offer and you must order within the next 72 hours to get this discount.

After the 72 hours are up the album will go back to the original price and is not likely to be available for this price again.

You can get it here: http://www.johnyriley.com/discount

Talk soon,

Johnny

In the course CFM you mention that we should take three different approaches to get people to click.

Should this be done with promotional emails only?

It would take a lot of time to come up with three emails like this that are good to put in my funnel. I'm not against doing the work but I'm wondering if I should just take an email like the one above and just break it down into three emails for my funnel.

At some point I want to try having three different emails like this to test in my funnel and see if I get more sales.

Hey Nicholas,

You can use that approach on any kind of email. Sales or otherwise. Keep in mind though... It's not so much of a "You should do this" as much as it's one tool in your toolbox. But it is a great way to increase clicks and engagement. I definitely don't do it all the time. But when I see an opportunity to do so, I try to.

To comment on your email... I feel like there are a few issues here. Really hope I'm not exhausting you with the constructive criticism... But here goes, in context...

Nicholas Hammon said

Subject: Why is the blues still relevant?

I realize you are going for curiosity here. While there is nothing wrong with this, in order for this to work it requires me to really be passionate about the question. Some people might be, but I don't know that it's going to insight a strong emotional reaction in many people. For example "They said that Blues Music was no longer relevant" might be an example of a way to get a more emotional response. In your example you are telling them something they already know (more or less). In mine, you are getting their ire up (hopefully).

However, once you get to the second and third section I think you get back on point.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey {!firstname_fix},

In keeping with my feedback about the subject line, I feel that this just isn't that curiosity provoking. It eels like you are perhaps trying to hard to find a curiosity provoking angle that you can tie in to the offer. But it's just falling flat for me. Because this is a sales offer, you can't afford to spend this much time beating around the bush to get them to click. Especially in such a subtle way. To stick with my example (and to make up a few facts just to make a point) one could say something like...

Subject: They said the blues music was no longer relevant.

Hey (name),

In 2012 Rolling Stone Magazine said that blues music was no longer relevant. In 2015 it became the best selling genre in the United States.

In 2017 I broke my arm and a doctor told me I'd never play guitar again. Earlier this year I was nominated for a Grammy for best contemporary blues artist.

Help me continue to buck the odds by grabbing a copy of my latest album here: http://link.com

========

Now obviously I'm making up a bunch of stuff. But that is a bolder example of how you can use curiosity to relate it to your offer. We really need to hold the readers interest. And to me, what you have is too subtle and doesn't do enough to pull the curiosity trigger and then keep the reader interested.

Alright so I put together another one for you to review. What I went with was something similar to the one you used in the CFM example. It's really short but I hope it does the trick.

Hopefully these are a little more curiosity provoking.

Here's a few subject lines I put together:

{!firstname_fix}, what is a blues album supposed to sound like?

"He’s Raw, Ruff & Ready".

Collective work of genius?

Hey {!firstname_fix},

“You guys were genius on this “song of the year” caliber project”. When reviewers around the world reviewed Crossroads Of My Life, they all say it’s one of the best they have ever heard.

"Crossroads Of My Life let’s us hear how a blues album is supposed to sound like” is how one reviewer put it.

Find out why they are saying it’s so great by clicking the link below.

http://www.johnyriley.com/cros.....ads-review

These are all from reviews so the link would go to a sales page with these reviews and some supportive copy.

Hey John,

I've got another email here I would like some feedback on. Hopefully I'm not posting too much here. I'm reworking my emails and I have a few that I'd like to have your feedback on.

Right now we aren't making many sells. Previously this might have been because I had the music on spotify. It's all taken down now and is only on the site. Since then I have made two sells. Yay!

Right now I'm creating two campaigns to slit test and because I'm not patient enough to wait for everyone to finish the funnel. I really need to get these sells up and right now the weakest part is the emails. Our marketing is great right now so I know we can make some sells. I'm seeing 47% conversions on the squeeze page.

 Subject:

Why do you love the blues, {!firstname_fix}?

Hey {!firstname_fix},

The blues is an anesthesia for the broken hearted and alienated.

It’s a way to turn a negative into a positive. Everyone has their own struggles to overcome in life and may feel alone or even oppressed at times. This is why everyone can connect with the blues. Some would even argue that it is about the soul.

Blues songs teach us three very simple lessons:

1. They have a way of reminding us that we’re not the first to struggle with situations such as relationships or money problems.

2. They give us perspective. You start to think maybe your problems aren't as bad as you think they are or as bad as someone else's.

3. You find humor in your situation and laugh about it.

I wrote a blog post on my site that I want to share with you. It’s a story about how the blues can help even the most lost of souls.

Maybe you could even write a song yourself about the problems. Leave a comment on my blog and tell me what your song would be about.

http://www.johnyriley.com/ptsd-blues

I left something there for you as well.

Talk soon,

Johnny

One of the headlines I'm using in my ads is, Broke, broken hearted, or betrayed? Don't fret there's a blues song just for you from Johnny Riley about every hardship in life. Since that headline is performing so well with blues fans in general I'm thinking I should make the rest of the funnel copy reflect it.

I'm trying to make it about them even though it's not without it being too obvious. Perhaps I'll run a campaign to test headlines.

Hey Nicholas,

I really feel sorta bad for always coming off so critical. That's not my intention. I'm just trying to give you one person's honest opinion.

For me, this felt confusing and maybe a bit braggy.

From what I know of Johny, and the genre, his brand is really down to earth as is blues in general. Even though these are just quotes, it sort of comes off as "everyone says I'm amazing, click and see just how amazing I really am".

I think you would benefit from a humbler approach. I tried to go to the link to see if I could spot an angle but there is no post there.

Hope you don't take any offense at the blunt feedback.

No worries at all. That's great to hear and not uncommon. Just thunk, you would have had to make generate 4000 streams just to make the same amount you made from album sales. More after the distributor cut.

I really like this. You made it about the subscriber, and broke it down into a clear email that is easy to follow. The bullet points break up the monotony of reading as well. Good job.

Only thing you might want to do is watch the click through rate. If it's low you may want to figure out a way to get a link and a call to action in the first few lines of the email as well. But you can start here and see how it goes.

Hey John,

There's some good feedback here. I was really trying to overcome some resistance by showing that the album has been received really well. I'll take another stab at it and post it here.

While I'm doing that I'll leave another one for you next time you come around.

This one we have worked on in the past and I think I might have something here. I'm still running traffic to it so I don't have all the stats yet. However I am noticing a lot more engagement on the post.

I ran an ad to test some copy and the winner was:

"I actually went down to the "Crossroads" with my guitar where the legend Robert Johnson supposedly cut a deal to play guitar...this is what happened. Click the link below to get the full story. https://www.johnyriley.com/the.....crossroads"

Obviously this is too long for a subject line so I was thinking: I actually went down to the crossroads...this is what happened.

Or maybe: This is what happened when I went down to the Crossroads. (either way some testing needs to be done to sort that out)

Here's the email.

Subject:

I you want to get that hair standing feeling...this is the place to go.

Hey {!firstname_fix},

I wrote this blog post on my site about the time I went out to the famous crossroads where the legend Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul.

Something bizarre happened to me while I was there that you are not going to believe..

What do you think about the Crossroads {!firstname_fix}? Does something actually hang around there?

Go read this blog post I wrote on my site and you can be the judge. While you’re there leave a comment and tell me what you think.

Here’s the link: http://www.johnyriley.com/the-.....ossroads

It still gives me the willies even to this day.

Alright so I rewrote that email and made it align more with the usp and the target audience. I lot a the people responding to our content seem to have christian values or are spiritual so I tried a new angle.

Subject:

A mixture of somber and the celebratory

Hey{!firstname_fix},

A preacher once said that Johnny Riley’s music is influenced by spiritual beings.

Johnny Ray Riley his father was a holiness preacher and he had a powerful influence on Johnny in his youth. He used to go to church with his father and even sung in the choir. Some would argue that you need to sing in the choir to achieve the soulful delivery required for the blues.

This album isn’t just music with a great sound. If has influences small and large from his father the preacher to the darker side of human nature. It’s about life. The good and the bad. It’s about a person that is trying to live up to his ideal, his father while contending with the darkness inside himself.

Get a copy of Johnny Riley’s album Crossroads Of My Life and see why a man of god would say Johnny Riley had spiritual influences when making the music.

http://www.johnyrily.com/discount

There has been some speculation on whether or not Johnny had some kind of unnatural influence when making his music. I think it might resonate with our target audience so it's worth trying.

Critical feedback is always welcomed.

Talk soon,

Johnny

I like all of this. You might try a subject line along the lines of

I ACTUALLY went down to the crossroads

of

I went down to the crossroads [This is what happened]

You could even try split testing them.

Good stuff.

Alright so I rewrote that email and made it align more with the usp and the target audience. I lot a the people responding to our content seem to have christian values or are spiritual so I tried a new angle.

There has been some speculation on whether or not Johnny had some kind of unnatural influence when making his music. I think it might resonate with our target audience so it's worth trying.

Critical feedback is always welcomed.

I like the email but I don't love the subject line. It's just not exciting, enticing, nor does it spur my curiosity. But that's just one person's opinion. I'd also try and get a link earlier in the email if possible.

Hope that helps.
