Hi, John.
So this is my first time running a campaign and I was hoping I could get some feedback.
My USP: Deryo is a songwriter and former lead singer for Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters. After a twenty-year hiatus from the music scene, he has returned as an indie who marries old school funk with modern R&B.
First ad test:
I started with Dynamic Creative first. Tested five artists and settled on fans of Earth, Wind & Fire
During the Dynamic Creative test I got 4 sign-ups. Only one person opened email 1, but they did not download the free songs.
Second ad test:
I took the winning elements from Dynamic Creative and ran four more ads using traffic as my objective to target fans of Earth, Wind & Fire. I also updated the squeeze page to mirror the winning ad elements.
Here are my stats for the ad that did the best:
Countries: USA, UK & Canada
Age range: 30-54
Audience size: 370,000
Relevance score: 9
Cost per click: 0.12
Click thru rate: 6.38%
Reach: 976
Impressions: 1050
Link clicks:67
Landing page views: 61
I have run it at $5.00 a day.
This ad has been running for two days now, with zero signups. None of the other ads from the second test had signups either. I am assuming after two days I should have at least had one signup. So I am not sure if it is the ad or the squeeze page that needs to be improved.
Here is the ad:
Text says:
Kickback with a glass of wine as you listen to R&B music with “a voice that is fine as honey and smooth as silk with a groove that was built to make you move.” Click to listen
Headline: R&B music you can chill with
Newsfeed text: Deryo is the former lead singer for Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters.
Here is the squeeze page: https://deryo.com/music/free-track-earth
Note on the picture: I tried a smiley face, but I got more clicks for my performance pictures.
I'm guessing the squeeze page may be the issue, but I wanted to get some feedback from you first, before I start making changes.
In case you are curious, here is the squeeze page I used during Dynamic Creative test: https://deryo.com/music/free-t.....ck-curtis/
Thanks in advance.
Hey Derrick,
This is an odd one because your ad metrics are pretty great. A relevancy score of 9 is really strong and your cost per link click is great at 12 cents.
I even think you're doing everything right in terms of the squeeze page. It looks pretty decent to me, and you're going about everything exactly the right way by the sound of it.
My best guess at this stage is that you haven't found the right audience yet. But I am surprised by those stats.
Do you have confirmation turned on or off?
Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a little one-on-one assistance so you can ask questions that pertain to your specific goals and get a second, more experienced, perspective? Thanks for taking a look, John. Confirmation is turned off.
Ok, thanks.
I would start by turning that on. When there are quality issues with subscribers (which you certainly have with that open rate), it can really help to require people opt in. Just make sure you have a thank you page added, that tells people that they need to check their inbox and click the confirmation link.
I also think a major issue here is that the objective is traffic. Its a weird issue, but I think you are sort of doing too well at attracting clicks from people that don't care enough to subscribe.
I think you need to up your budget to at least $10/day and select conversions as the objective. $15 would be better.
Another problem at this stage is that with only four subscribers there just isn't enough data to analyze.
What I would do is create a new campaign and turn on confirmed opt in. Use conversions as your objective. Only select Facebook in your placements and make sure the "expand audience" box is NOT ticked.
Use campaign budgeting, and target three audiences. One per ad set. Use your best performer, but also try a few more. Run things a bit longer (at least a week). Once you get 20 subscribers you can start running breakdowns to see what platforms, placements, and demographics are converting best.
Let me know how that goes.

Ok. I will switch to conversions and let you know what happens.
Thanks,

Sounds good. Keep us posted.

I'm back finally with another update on my progress.
An interesting issue I am having is that I am getting signups that facebook isn't picking up on, so I am not sure how to calculate the cost per result, but for now, I will just give you FB's stats.
I tested a bunch of artists and landed on two.
I am targeting fans of Luther Vandross and Rick James
Stats for Luther:
Optimizing for conversion
Countries: USA, UK & Canada
Age range: 30-54
Audience size: 500,000
Relevance score: 9
Cost per click: 0.21
Click thru rate: 6.75%
Reach: 1739
Impressions: 1986
Link clicks:133
Landing page views: 115
I have run it at $10.00 a day.
Cost per result: $3.75
Fb says: I have 11 subscribers, but I actually have 17.
This has run for a week.
Rick stats:
Optimizing for conversion
Countries: USA, UK & Canada
Age range: 30-54
Audience size: 89,000
Relevance score: 9
Cost per click: 0.33
Click thru rate: 4.40%
Reach: 866
Impressions: 1090
Link clicks:45
Landing page views: 38
I have run it at $10.00 a day.
Cost per result: $4.67
Fb says: I have 5 subscribers, but I actually have 8.
This has run 4 days.
Text for both ads says:
Kickback with a glass of wine as you listen to R&B music with “a voice that is fine as honey and smooth as silk with a groove that was built to make you move.” Click to learn more
Headline: R&B music you can chill with
Newsfeed text: Deryo is the former lead singer for Herbie Hancock and The Headhunters.
Squeeze page for both ads: https://deryo.com/music/free-t.....rth-fire3/
Opt in is turned off.
At this point I'm wondering what my next steps should be. Should I continue looking for a better audience, or should I focus on tweaking my squeeze page?
Hey, these are some great stats.
Your CTR is fantastic on the first one and pretty good on the second one. The relevance score is also great on both.
However, you are still paying too much per subscriber even when you calculate the ones that FB isn't counting. That seems to suggest your squeeze page is what needs work.
In terms of the issue where FB is not counting the conversions, it may be that you have your conversion goal settings to "domain equals" instead of "domain contains". Someone else just reported today that they have been having a similar issue and that changing it to "domain contains" fixed it. You would change this by going into "custom conversions" within your tools.
The next step would be to work on your squeeze page. What's teh current conversion rate there?

I checked my custom conversion, but it's already set to url contains.
As for squeeze page conversions, it is converting at about 15%.
Ok, cool. Therein lies the main problem. That conversion rate is too low. You want to be closer to 30%, if not higher. If you were able to hit 30% on your squeeze page you would be at $1.62 per subscriber which would be within range of where you want to be. So right now, you need to work on that squeeze page until your conversion rate goes up. But do keep in mind that targeting is a factor as well. So you may also need to eventually test other audiences. But I'd start with your best performer and go from there.

It really depends, but I like to have at least 100 visitors before coming to too many conclusions. However, sometimes a winning element becomes clearer sooner.

I managed to get the conversion rate up to 30% on the squeeze. Plus I got my first comment on one of my blog posts.
So now I am turning my focus to my funnel. Open rates for the first email are not good. So the question I am wondering is, does this mean I've got the wrong audience or there is something wrong with the email?
With confirmed opt in off:
My open rate for email one was 52% and my click thru rate was 25%
I turned on confirmed opt in and now my open rate is 66% and my click thru rate is 31%
But with confirmed opt in on only 13% of people signing up are confirming.
So, do I need to tweak my email or find another audience?
Hi Derrick,
Steve here. So just to clarify, you're referring to the download email and not the confirmation message right?
Hi Derrick,
That's great to hear that you improved your conversion rate.
Did you reset all of your email stats by cloning the messages and deleting the old ones or did just let things run? If you just let things run then you won't be seeing the actual open rate for a while as it will take a bit of time for the new averages to settle. It may be that your new open rate is quite a bit better than you think if the old stats are still in the mix.

So you are saying that only 13% of people that are signing up are confirming? In other words out of 100 people to sign up you have only 13 confirmed subscribers? Something is definitely wrong if that's the case. Can you post a link? I'll sign up and see if I can spot a problem.

Yes. That's exactly what's happening. Here's the squeeze page: https://deryo.com/music/free-tracks/
Thanks for taking a look.
Hi Derrick,
Thanks for the link. There are definitely a few issues here.
For starters after entering your email you are taken to a page that says I am all done and no further steps are necessary. This page here: https://deryo.com/music/thanks.....7c0740ed75
But more concerning is the fact I never received a welcome email. It has been about 5 minutes since I signed up but still nothing.
It looks like you are perhaps just using a wordpress plugin as your email management tool, in place of something like aweber... is that correct?
There is a string at the end of your thank you page that indicates that this is not aweber, and looking at your source code it appears to be Mailfit. Is that right?
If that's the case then there is your biggest problem. You really need a reliable email management tool like Aweber. Deliverability is absolutely terrible for a self managed system like that. What's likely happening is that your deliverability is less than 20% and many that are getting the email are just confused because the message they saw after signing up said they were all set.
Let me know if I have it wrong, but if not, I think you need to go back to MMM and follow the set up suggestions there. You really need a quality email management tool like Aweber.
