Yeah, I hear you. It's definitely not going to be for everybody. I love it, because I love reaching out and interacting with people face to face, and this is the closest I can get to that in this context. I don't know if it will help with my conversions yet, but hopefully. I have gotten some great feedback from a few people, so I'm optimistic. I think most people are used to getting emails with their names and all that, but an actual person saying their name is different.

Thanks for signing up through the link, btw.

I totally agree. I have received a few personalized videos from people over the years in emails and they made huge impressions. I still remember their names all these years later.

The open rates are not great. The first message is at 37.6% at the moment. The click rate is only at 8.6%. I just changed the subject line earlier today, and removed the word "shit", to see if that impacts anything. That subject line now reads: "My hilarious story of dog poo and depression".

The second blog post email has a 32.4% open rate and a 12.2% click rate.

The third blog post email has a 17% open rate and a 9.4% click rate. I also played with the subject line and copy of that email a bit today.

The LTOs are as follows:

1. 26.2% open, 4.8% click

2. 17.9% open, 7.1% click

3. 7.1% open, 0% click

Now, only 14 people have completed the whole funnel, so I guess these numbers will change a bit over the next few days, but still. Not great. And I've only had 2 sales so far.

Yeah, also, my squeeze page is only converting at about 20% overall. A little higher for the Nick Cave crowd, about 23%, and just about 20% for Tom Waits fans. So I guess my squeeze page could use a bit of tweaking.

Yikes. 37.6% open for the welcome email? That is the worst I've ever seen. But that sounds like a deliverability issue more than a subject line issue. And that click through rate for the downloads is pretty bad considering it's the whole reason they signed up.

I usually expect to see 80% or more on a deliverability email. That said, I do sometimes see 50 - 70% when the opt in is turned off (something I am doing less and less lately.

It could be the swear word. It might be too much for a new sub. But to be honest, in my experience a subject line that people perceived as negative would get a lot of opens and very few clicks (if it turned people off).

Having said that, I just read that this was just 14 people. I wouldn't personally start making any assumptions just yet.

Your squeeze page conversion rates are not bad. 20% is a little low but it's really not bad at all, and it might go up as Facebook dials in more on the segment most likely to convert.

No, no, no, the 37.6% is the first blog post. I don't actually have the numbers for the welcome email (which delivers the downloads) as that's not a part of the autoresponder series. I'll have to do some research into whether I can get that number somewhere.

There are only 14 people that have gone through the whole thing. I've gotten just over 100 signups total, over just over a week, so there are quite a few people in the middle of the funnel right now.

Ah, I see. Definitely find out if you can find out the numbers of the welcome email opens and clicks as that will tell you a lot. If it's only 40% then you know that there is a deliverability issue or a double opt in is needed. It would also mean that those that are making it on to your list are mostly engaging. On the other hand, if you have an 80% open rate on that welcome email then you have a better indication that you are losing their interest.

You get to see these numbers in Aweber so I'm used to seeing the welcome email stats as part of the campaign.

Yeah, I've been googling my head off, and can't figure it out. I've sent a message to Mailchimp support to find out. I'm sure there must be a way, but otherwise, I'll just include the welcome email in the autoresponder series.

Heard back. For some bizarre reason you can't get that info, so I've removed the welcome message and set the autoresponder up to send the songs immediately after someone signs up. I've done this before on my other list, so I know it works pretty well. So I should have some data on the open rate on that soon.

Got another sale. Numbers are still way too low, but at least I'm selling SOMETHING.

Onward!

Awesome to hear about the sale. Very weird that they don't show you the open rates on the welcome email. Glad there is a workaround.

Yeah, and I did that - started a new autoresponder that starts with the welcome email, delivered immediately, and switched the other one off. And while I only did it a very short while ago and I've only gotten 7 new subscribers since I'm thinking there's definitely something weird going on, since only 2 of those 7 have opened the email. Now I guess it's theoretically possible that some of those signed up and didn't rush straight to their inbox, but 5? Sounds doubtful.

So what could cause that problem? Any ideas? I will write an email to their support, of course.

You're with Mailchimp, right? I have heard about deliverability issues with them, but then again, everyone seems to have delivery conspiracies with every service out there. But 2 out of 7 does sound pretty weird. Would be handy if MC offered phone support so you could get to the bottom of it.

Have you turned confirmed opt in on? I have been doing this more and more and it not only hasn't hurt my opt in rates, but it has also helped to train the algorithm to find a more engaged type of person. I don't really know what is going on, but my assumption is that some people enter fake emails or ones they don't use anymore, just to see what is on the other side. If they don't get immediate satisfaction they just give up. But because you are optimized for conversions you train FB to deliver more and more of your ads to these kinds of people. I saw this big time with MMM, turned confirmed opt in on and everything improved. Even conversions ironically. I have been seeing it with clients as well lately. I'm not positive that what I think is happening is actually happening, but the results are still the same.

So you could start by turning confirmed opt in back on, and then reset your stats to see what happens.

Yeah, turned that on. Let's see what that does.

I have another list on Mailchimp where I do the same thing (deliver the lead magnet in the first email in the series) and that welcome email has over 70%  opens (single opt in), so I don't think it's MailChimp per se. But let's see what happens with the double opt in.

Sounds good. Let me know. I'd be curious to hear the results.

I'm guessing the traffic source is different on that other list that is over 70%?

It's worth considering though, that 70% is still low. Not terribly low for single opt in. But ideally with a double opt in it could be in the 80% - 90% range.

By the way, based on our chat about the Cowboy Junkies I have reached out to the band's manager about a possible interview with Michael Timmins. Long shot, but would be cool.

Yeah, that is a travel site, and the traffic is in part organic and in part Google ads.

I know it's not great, but at least it's not 30%.

That interview sounds cool! Can't wait to see what happens with that.

I have noticed that certain genres are notorious for signing up with fake addresses, addresses that aren't theirs, or just typing in any old thing. I wouldn't have thought it to be the case with Nick Cave fans, but you never know. Let me know what happens with the double opt in being on.

We'll see what happens. I would have thought that if it was a deliverability issue I would be able to tell from the Bonjoros, since they are sent from a different service, so I would have thought I would get at least one or two replies from people who receive that and not the songs.

Anyway, judging by results from the past 15 hours or so it's been doing slightly better, but still not great. The sample size is tiny still, though, so we'll see. I actually can't reset the the numbers, I can only create a new automation, and since it was only 10 people before I turned on the double opt-in, I don't think it makes that much of a difference. I'll see what the numbers look like in 1-2 days and see. I'm pretty confused by this. I've actually been googling tests and stuff, and as far as I can tell, Mailchimp is definitely on par with Aweber when it comes to deliverability. Aweber might perform slightly better, but as far as I can tell, Mailchimp tends to deliver over 90%, according to most of the comparison pages I've found. So I'm pretty sure it's not the platform itself that's dropping the ball here.

I wonder if it could have something to do with the "from" field. My "from" address is eyvi@onebadday.band (I'm having some trouble with the .is email). I wonder if the .band domain is setting off spam filters.

Anyway. This is slightly frustrating, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

I've been going through this with customer service from Mailchimp and they've suggested a few steps to increase deliverability. Here's hoping it gets better.
