Hey everybody,
I put this post here because it really isn't about marketing, at least not yet!
I am putting the finishing touches on my new CD, and I having some trouble with programming decent drum fills. Yeah...I know....get a real drummer! But right now I am stuck with my second choice, which is programming drums on an old Roland R5 Human Rhythm Composer. I do my final mastering with Wavelab on a computer, but for recording tracks I am somewhat "old school", using outboard gear, analog mixer, and an Akai DR16 hard disk recorder. I don't record my tracks on a computer, so using plug ins for drums is not an option. (OK, all you young guys using Pro Tools on a lap top, cut me some slack here...after all, I cut my teeth years ago on Studor two inch tape machines!)
Despite it's age, The Roland still has some very realistic drum sounds, and I have no problem programming the basic beats, but I am a guitar player, and certainly not a drummer! So far anything that I come up with for fills totaly sucks!
What I am hoping to find are some tasty rock and country-rock style drum fills that are written out on a grid. If anybody knows of any websites, or even books that might steer me in the right direction, I'd sure appreciate it!
BTW, if any of you did download my song "Faded Old Flag", that is not the version that will be on my CD! I used an Alesis digital drum machine for the drum tracks on that track, and it sounds terrible! The Roland is much more realistic sounding.
What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Hey Greg,
Great question but I'm so out of the loop on that stuff. I use producers exclusively these days and don't do much beyond playing guitar organic instruments and singing. My producer brings in the loops and all the other magic dust. Sorry I can't help. I'm sure someone else here will have some tips for you.

Thanks for the reply John.
I think I finally got it worked out. After spending the past several days intently listening to drum fills played by real drummers on many different styles, I have a whole new respect for what they do! In the past, I have always appreciated playing with a good solid drummer, and I would give my eye teeth to have one right now, but living out in the sticks like I do makes that a bit difficult. So for now I am sticking with programming drum tracks. It is actually kind of fun now that I am getting it all put together! There are probably only going to be just a few songs with drums on this CD anyway. But if by some chance some incredible drummer happens to have thier car break down on the highway that runs by my place, and they need a place to stay............

I just think it would be SO awesome if that worked. $5 for a drum track. A just searched fiverr on a whim. How crazy would that be?
Tell you what, if it sucks, I'll happily send you the five bucks. I just want someone to try this as an experiment 🙂

Great Idea John! I may give it a try. I'm still trying to get my head around the idea of being able to get so much for 5 bucks!

Yeah, it's an amazing site. There is some crap there but there is some pretty great stuff as well. I had an artist make a custom picture for me of my son. Beautiful picture now in a frame in my home. For 5 friggen bucks. Crazy.

It's Fiverr to the rescue again! The only downside I've heard is that some people selling links on Fiverr are poor quality links that can actually hurt your site more than help...good to specify what you want and what you're paying for at any rate rather than paying $5 and hoping they know what they're doing!

I am absolutely addicted to Fiverr right now. I don't doubt that there are some bad services out there if people don't understand SEO. I'm sure a lot of people just search backlinks and pick the service that offers the most links. That might be bad. But I've been using them for a while now for SEO and have had great results. The only bad experiences I had was when one guy wrote an article and submitted it about a topic I specifically asked him not to write about, and then another guy submitted my press release to his own PR site when all I wanted was him to write it (which effectively made it duplicate content when I later released it.)
But if you search for very specific jobs (IE, .edu backlinks, ignore all that is too good to be true and sort by rating, I have found that you get pretty good value.
I've even heard that a lot of SEO services are doing almost nothing but fiverr these days. Still, I think it's best to always mix it up and make sure you got some genuine content out there as well.
