How much traffic can a shared server handle?

Hey John,

I'm speaking to a potential jv partner who has a list of @100,000 so if 1 % of the list clicks to my landing page that would be 10,000 hits in @a day. I'm on a shared Hostgator server. Considering how few hits my site gets in an ordinary day, I'm wondering whether that would cause a problem and if so, do you know how to set things up so my site can manage a sudden surge like that?

Many thanks!

Julianna

Hey Julianna,

Not sure if that was a typo or not but 1% would only be 1000 clicks. Maybe you meant 10%.

I used to do the same exact math you are doing in your head but in my experience it won't really go like that. A likely scenario is that a list that size only has a real open rate of 25% or less (usually less). And that will happen over several days. The click through rate would be even less. Probably about a third. So we are likely talking about 8,000 people or so landing on your site over 3 days or so, with at least half landing the first day. My guess is that your server could handle 4000 people landing in one day, especially if it's a simple squeeze page and you don't have the video hosted on the same server. But every host is different so you might want to reach out to BH and make sure.

I use a private server because I don't want to risk a site going down on a launch day. I have a number of sites on it and I spend around $40 a month. But my price depends on bandwidth. I'd just contact your host and explain your concern and see what they say. I'm sure they will have an option for you.

The quality of the list is really everything with something like this. I can't tell you how often I get promised the world by these people with 100k lists only to get a dribble of traffic. Some perform well, the majority don't. I regularly advertise with a company that has a list of over 200k and only get about 3000 clicks every time. Still worth it, but not anything like I imagined when I first did the math.

I once had someone with a supposed list of 350k send me 50 clicks. Yeesh.

Hope it goes well for you though. There are plenty of good lists out there.

Do you have a template for an affiliate agreement? He has asked for one. Or should I just tell him I'll set it up in clickbank which will ensure he gets paid correctly? That might be the simplest solution for me at this point...

Hey Julianna. I don't have any particular template. In fact, in all my years doing this I've never asked for one, nor have I been asked to sign one. That said, I suppose it's not a crazy request. There are a ton of sample agreements online. Here's one example: http://www.amnavigator.com/wm.htm - That was just the first one that came up. And as you say, Clickbank is another option if he's more comfortable with that.

Ok cool thanks!

A couple of related questions:

1. My membership software, DAP has affiliate capabilities as I'm sure wishlist does. Is that what you use? If your membership software enables affiliates does that mean all the transactions can be properly managed by your payment processor eliminating the need for clickbank?

2. Well this is unrelated I think but it's easier for me to just check back here. If you want to move the question somewhere else let me know: If I want to offer a LTO of a bundle such as a cd compilation, do I just send my amazon link for my zip file to their email once they have made the purchase? Is there a way to do it so a link expires and/or can't be passed on? Like maybe a password protected system with the zip file available via password? What do you do when you make this kind of offer?

Hey Julianna,

1. I'm not at all familiar with DAP these days so you'd need to check with them in terms of what they offer. I use 1shoppingcart for my affiliate program. Affiliate tracking is not part of wishlist. I pay everyone manually each month.

2. I create a customer list in aweber and have people enter their details after they order. This allows me to add them to a customer list and automatically remove them from the general one. Then I set up my welcome email to send the product out. And yes, I send a direct download link. There are expiration scripts out there but I don't use them. I figure if someone wants to share a link, they can just as easily send that friend the files. However one simple solution might be to create a download page and then use page expiration robot to expire it within 7 days.

Cheers.

Well it sounds like you're not too worried about it so I'm thinking it's not worth the hassle... plus page expiration robot conflicted with my other plugins... not very well designed according to Scott.

Many thanks John!

Cool. And yeah, PER is buggy as hell. But it gets the job done You just need to make sure you update a lot. But if you have a ton of plugins, there can sometimes be conflicts, or so I hear. It's worked pretty fine for me though.
