Hey John - I pretty much always ask a question in the weekly call, which has been incredibly helpful for music, and I feel every time you answer a question, a light bulb goes off, and I apply your advice immediately, and see some kind of results, and then do tweaks from that point on...and I have a strong feeling that in the near future money is going to be consistently coming in from music, which will be amazing.
BUT, today, my question really has nothing to do with music...
Here's the deal...when I discovered MMM for the first time, what really attracted me to it was the fact that it was the first time I'd seen someone teaching music marketing to musicians - but using completely online strategies.
And at the time, I was working online...like I'd figured out how to make money on various platforms like Craigslist, Bing PPC, Backpage (before it was taken down), SEO with an old blog I have, and YouTube ranking...I figured out how to bring in good money with all those platforms, doing random promo stuff...like, I'm guessing you may know affiliate marketing companies like Max Bounty and Cash Network. They pay affiliates to promote products, and then we make commissions, and that's pretty much how I made a living.
I did really well with Craigslist for a few years, and that was the majority of my income, and it was awesome, cause I only had to work like an hour and a half a day posting ads in different cities, and I could spend the rest of the day working on music...walking my dog, etc...
But that's no longer the case...they got super strict and pretty much all marketers on CL got shut down...so, I've been doing deliveries, and oh well, it's fine...but I do miss the freedom of that lifestyle, which was a couple of years ago.
I always wanted to know how to combine music with online marketing strategies, so, anyway, it's awesome that I'm learning all that stuff from you...
BUT, in the meantime, I'm just wondering...is it realistic to be able to set aside like even a half hour a day to build something on the side, using a funnel system as you've taught, to start bringing in an income, from gosh, I don't even know what?
I don't even really care what it is...it could be health, it could be the make money online niche...or any product in MaxBounty.
Building an email list used to really intimidate me, and even back when I did the marketing stuff with CL, the smart marketers always said the money is in the mailing list, and I always ran the other way...but now I'm not intimidated by it anymore, and just started thinking...now that I've built a whole funnel for my band, and I understand tags, segments, and all this stuff...it no longer scares me...it seems way easier than ever before...and on top of that, I'm somewhat decent with FB ads now.
And I remember there was a topic in this forum that said something like "non music related", which is the whole reason I'm posting this here...
So, I guess my question is, could you provide any advice if I wanted to set up a side business using a funnel? But something that really won't eat up a lot of my time? It doesn't have to be anything I'm super passionate about, but I do love stuff like health and exercise, and movies, etc...And is this even realistic or am I being crazy? I really have no idea what kind of time would go into building a side thing...like to even make anywhere from $500 - $1000 a month with any kind of automated system...Something tells me it can't be that hard to sit down, concentrate, and then put something together that would bring in money...or, I'm just nuts!
Thanks!
Hi Paul,
You're not nuts, but it's also not so easy.
A half an hour a day sounds unrealistic to me. But I think it would be possible to do something that took an hour or two. But again, it's not easy.
The internet marketing world is full of people that have made a lot of money selling lousy offers, or things that they don't really care about. But I've never succeeded with any projects that were like that. When I first started online I tried dozens of things based on affiliate products and they all flopped. All of my successes have been based on things that offered real value to a market in need. And that's the hard part, more than the time requirements.
Succeeding as a business is not that much different than succeeding as an artist You really need to be someone exceptional (at least in my experience - though I know there are many exceptions to this).
There are also so many different business models that it's hard to discuss where to even start.
One thing that comes to mind which meets your criteria would be something like becoming a Youtube creator. You could easily create a video each day in less than two hours, depending n what kind of videos you did.
You could even become a podcaster.
However, both of those things take passion for the work, and a long time to really get going (usually).
I could imagine setting up a completely automated email list filled with affiliate links and just adding new emails every other day, and then feeding it with ads, but this sort of falls into that "not exceptional" category, and I question whether or not it would be profitable if it was that passive. But you could certainly try it.
If I knew about a ton of low hanging fruit out there I'd go get it myself. Some are able to create strategies marketing cheap products from china (or so they say) but that stuff has never worked for me. Only projects where I really worked hard, and put a lot of care into have, at least for any consistent amount of time.
That said, based on the fact that you have made a living online in the past, I have no doubt you could build a successful online business if you wanted to.
Feel free to post any thoughts if you want to spit ball ideas.
