Hey John -

So, I've been in this scientist mode quite a bit this year trying to figure out a stream of income outside of music, mainly cause I want to be able to pay FOR music marketing while being able to actually work on making music...I keep running into this method that a LOT of marketers are doing now...like, when I was doing online marketing a few years back, it was a totally different landscape, mostly everyone promoting affiliate products and making commissions, at least in the world I was a part of.

But this method actually goes along sort of with what you teach inside of your FB ads course...I feel like it's this hybrid of online marketing and offline marketing.  The OFFLINE part is where I get anxious, cause I'm an introvert, and any money I ever made on the internet in the past was behind a screen but I know I absolutely have to get past that, and I know this will force me outside of my comfort zone.

So, if you could offer any pointers on this, or advice, I'd greatly appreciate it...

The concept seems very simple...and I'm seeing a lot of marketers doing this in different ways...but THIS one involves FB ads.

Pretty much, with this method, you find local businesses that DON'T have a Facebook Pixel installed on their website, send them an initial email, phone call, or FB message, letting them know they're missing out on customers because of this...let them know we'd be happy to show them how to set up that Pixel completely free, and it would only take about 15 minutes of their time...

And for clients that do take you up on that initial call, you ask them what their needs are, how are they going about getting new customers, etc...and eventually lead that to asking if they do any kind of digital marketing to attain new customers.  Maybe even point out some competitors down the street who DO have the Pixel installed on their sites.

Eventually I'd tell them that I could help them become a leader in their niche in this neighborhood/city with FB ads...

And if they say yes, I start to run re-targeting ads for them, I receive a monthly payment from them - anywhere from $500 - $1000, as long as they're happy with what I provide them...

They'd have to give me admin access to their FB page so I could run the ads through their account and also I'd have to install the pixel on whatever page they use as their website.

I'm leaving a lot out here just to not make this way too long...but like, for businesses that DON'T have traffic to their sites, I'd ask them if they'd ALSO like to set up regular ads so that cold traffic could find their page and then be retargeted.

I feel like I should offer these services for free for a few weeks cause I honestly have never done this.  This way, they could see what they would get - btw the business pays for the ads...also, INSIDE of the ad, something must state "mention this ad to get a free consultation, or free appetizer or free class" or whatever business I work with, whether it's a plumber, restaurant, gym, etc...that's the only way they'll know new customers are coming from the ads I set up.

Anyway, there's an awesome FB group with a lot of people who are doing this, stumbling, but I'm seeing various people landing their first clients and being really surprised and excited too, just from following this training I got last week.

I figure cause when I run traffic to my band's landing page, it's not all that much work to manage it after things are running smoothly...so, I'd think the same would go for a local business.  But, I'm just nervous with the whole part of actually having to get on a call and explain things, cause I'm pretty sure I'll stumble upon my words and screw up the first few times.

But I do think this is doable.  Anyway, sorry for the super long thread here - if you have any pointers or advice on this, or have ever heard of this method or know anything about this, I'd love to know...my main goal is to find an income here I can just reinvest into music.

BTW - my band mate did something very similar...he was helping local businesses get new clients and they were really happy with what he was doing, to the point where one of them bought him a used car...he was charging them WAY less per week too, and he didn't use FB ads...only FB groups, BUT Facebook has gotten super strict with posting in groups and he started getting banned, so he stopped doing that.  At least FB ads I know is a stable platform.

Hey Paul,

That all sounds very doable. I personally think $1000 per month sounds pretty high for most small businesses, but some would surely pay it. I think $300 - $500 would get you more takers.

There is no really way around making those calls since it's an offline sales model, so my best advice is to just bight the bullet and pick up the phone. However, I think the thing that is making you nervous is the fear of sounding like, or even being, a fraud, since you are so new to it all. It's really hard to be an expert when your new, but at the same time we feel like we can't expose our lack of experience. I was the same way 12 or 13 years ago when I was new to all this. My advice is to just be hyper honest. People will brace themselves against a sales person, especially one that doesn't sound confident. So tell them right out of the gate that you are an independent advertiser and you think you can help them. Lead with the fact that it's a sales call (essentially), tell them you are brand new to working with other clients, and just be super honest like you would with any "real" person you met when having drinks with friends. You may not make as many sales (or any right away), but you'll start to hear their objections and you'll start to gain confidence as you become more certain you know what is coming. Then you can shift your pitch up a little to lead with some strengths, while still maintaining the honesty.

I really try to be as authentic as I can when it comes to sales, and while some of my copy is high pressure, my content isn't, and my personal sales pitches never are. Ironically, I think you'll find that quite often when you literally tell people not to buy from you, they often want to even more. You'll also sleep better at night.

Falling on your face on a sales call sucks really hard if you are trying to be someone your not. But it's really no sweat if their is no BS on the line at all. "Hey, this is a long shot but I'm a brand new freelance advertiser who lives in the neighborhood and is a fan of your business, but I spotted an area that I think you guys might be missing out on and I wondered if there was any chance I might be able to set up a phone meeting with a manager or owner? No pressure or anything, I just thought I had an idea for you guys that might help bring in more business", is the kind of approach I'd take. Mean everything you say, be honest, charge fairly, and people will respond better and you'll feel a lot less nervous.

Hope that helps and let me know if you end up bringing in some sales.

This is such a great response with so much good information thank you.  I’m actually gonna take some of what you said word for word and put it into my script word document because it feels way more natural to me...just the way you worded a lot of this, and pointed out just go out there being completely honest.  That just makes me feel a lot better about the whole thing and it’s true - there’s nothing wrong with being a beginner and letting people know that.  You're totally right I was worried about coming off as sort of like a fraud or sleazy sales guy or whatever...everything that’s ever worked out for me in my life is cause I just went into it relaxed and natural...I’ll keep you posted with results thanks again!

Awesome! Really glad that resonated with you. I can totally relate. I remember the same kinds of fears and concerns in my early days online as well. Good luck and do let me know how it goes.
