Hi John,

Hope you're keeping safe and well. I'm currently in a lockdown in London and am making the most of this time.  As well as working on my music and attempting to write the "blog post of a lifetime", I would like to dip my toes into affiliate marketing, especially affiliate marketing via Youtube (but not limited to this). There are so many videos on this topic on Youtube but it's hard to know which Youtubers are genuine and legitimate. I thought I'd ask you for your opinion on this as I'm aware that you have a wealth of experience in this area and might be able to point me in the direction of good Youtube channels.

Many thanks,

Shyma

Ps, I'm really enjoying the weekly coaching calls. Will be listening to yesterday's call later today.

Hi Shyma,

I am doing well, thanks for asking. Glad to hear you are as well, or so it sounds.

There is certainly a lot of noise out there. I'm certainly not the world's biggest expert on YouTube, but I have my bag of tricks. For me, and most marketers I know, Youtube is a much harder place to make a living. But if you are a really good content creator it can be done.

In my opinion, a lot of confusion is caused by the many courses out there. Don't get me wrong, courses are invaluable, but they also confuse people. Courses tend to be created by people who teach you the steps they took to get somewhere, however it's usually not the steps that were responsible for their success as much as it was the product/service/content.

There is brand and there is marketing. Brand pulls and marketing pushes. Courses tend to teach you how to push, and leave out the fact that if you are pushing towards nothing of real value then you will get poor results.

So, in my opinion, the only way you will make a lot of money on YouTube is if you can create content so compelling that it will start to take off without any marketing. Only then, will the marketing techniques really come in handy and take things to the next level.

In that regard, all I really know about content creation strategies on Youtube is to:

  • Release regularly.
  • Push viewers to subscribe, like, and comment.
  • Use SEO friendly titles.
  • Include SEO friendly descriptions.
  • Use compelling Thumbnails.
  • Consider using advertising to get your videos in front of competitor channels.
  • Create channel trailers and use ads to promote them and grow your subscribers as quickly as possible.
  • Once you get more than 1000 subs, and meet the view minimum criteria, you can apply to be part of the partner program and generate some ad revenue.
  • Building backlinks to your videos can help you rank for keywords (but YouTube SEO is a somewhat different strategy).

Unfortunately I don't have any one educator to recommend.

Keep me posted on how things go for you.
