Hey John, so my open rate is only @66% for the freebie offer but of those opens, 97% click on the link for the freebie. Not sure why the open rate isn't higher on that freebie offer. Any ideas? The title is: Your FREE Music Meditation Lesson!

I've added an extra freebie making the sales funnel 7 days instead of 5. Is that correct? So, the 2nd freebie comes 2 days after the first and the 3rd 2 days after the 2nd. Then on the 7th day, I pitch. Correct?

I've been tweaking the pages to get better click thrus but I'm a little unclear how to do that. Any suggestions... tried and true methods to get people to click on the link to the email they've opened?

Thanks!

Julianna

Here are current stats:

41% open rate on second email (with gift #2.) Of 26 people who opened, only 7 clicked the link to get the free download.

37% open rate on third email (with gift #3) Of 18 people who opened, only 3 clicked the link to watch the free video lesson

This is really frustrating because I'm just spending money every day and not seeing sales (I've seen 3 so far). I don't want to stop the ad because I'm getting such a great price on my leads but they are not converting to sales...

Just so I'm clear, when you say freebie you mean the first email that goes out? Just 67% of the people who sign up to get something from you are opening the email that gives it to them? Do you automatically redirect to it after confirmation as well?

Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a little one-on-one assistance so you can ask questions that pertain to your specific goals and get a second, more experienced, perspective? Yes, that's what I'm saying. The confirmation page once they opt in tells them to check their email inbox.

So, of 153 subscribers added in the past week, 106 opened the first email (with their freebie) and 66 clicked the download link.

Here's recent stats now that I've extending the sales funnel cycle to 7 days and added an extra freebie. I checked these stats against previous days when there was just a 5 day funnel and it doesn't seem to have made any difference on my open rate or click thru rate.

Of 22 subscribers on June 20, 7 have opened the sales pitch message and 2 clicked on the link.

Of 18 subscribers on June 19, 8 have opened the sales pitch message and 2 clicked on the link.

Also the original freebie seems to be performing slightly better than the new one. For optins after June 16 when I introduced it:

Of 58 opens of the new freebie, 12 clicked the link to download

of 60 opens of the original freebie (which now comes in the email following the new freebie, so email #3) 60 opens and 15 link clicks

so, should I go back to my original 5 day sales funnel and lose the new freebie? If so, still don't know how to get a better open and click thru rate.

Many thanks for your help!

Hey Julianna,

My apologies. I'm finding myself confused by the description and am having a heard time visualizing what is happening here. It seems odd that only 67% of the people signing up for a freebie are accessing it. There could be something people are finding cumbersome in the the process. This is a video, yes? Why not just let them watch it on a page instead of download. With mobile being a third of all traffic that may be part of the problem.

Not totally following the purpose for a second freebie.

The freebie is a mobile friendly audio download. If they are on a phone they can just listen to it. Maybe I need to say that in the message body? But meanwhile, that figure is for the open rate. Only @67% of people who sign up for the freebie are opening the email containing it, which may mean there are spam/delivery issues? So, basically I'm losing a 3rd of my audience right out of the gate. I checked with aweber and they advised me to change the title of the first email because I had the word FREE in caps. So, I did that. Otherwise things appear to be in order. Only 3% undeliverable. So, it seems there is nothing else I can do to change that open rate on my first email unless you have a suggestion?

You and I talked about adding another freebie to the funnel which extended it to 7 days. I was letting you know that that did not appear to have been successful. The freebie I added didn't improve the chances of people clicking through to my sales page when the time came for that email. So, I eliminated the extra freebie and went back to a 5 day funnel.

So, I'm still trying to figure out how to get improved open and click through rates. I have tried shortening the copy as we discussed but that does not seem to have had a significant impact...

Also, could you run me through what the sales funnel for a cheaper product looks like when I'm speaking to an audience who has passed on a pricier program? i.e. so, the person didn't buy how to meditate with music but they remained on my list and maybe they will want my other meditation course which is only $27.

1.  How many days after the end of the how to meditate with music sales cycle do I attempt to offer the $27 program to them?

2. How many emails are in the funnel for the $27 program?

3. What is the format? Do I offer a freebie and acknowledge that maybe the other program was cost prohibitive? Does the funnel last 5 days? Etc.

And last but not least, since we seem to have narrowed it down to an engagement issue with the sales funnel, here are 2 email messages. Would you be willing to give feedback on them? I shortened them as we talked about and I'm not sure how to tweak them further:

Okay, a lot to address here so I'll do it with bullet points so I can keep track of everything.

  • What is the open rate on that first email. That is likely a more important statistic. If it's close to 100% then all is likely fine and it may be that something in your email is turning off a small percentage. It may also just be that there are a lot of people that subscribe and intend on getting to it later and never do. So maybe you could up the urgency somehow or follow up in some way to make sure they are using the freebie.
  • As far as what the sales funnel looks like there are no real rules here. What I have done on occasion is simply follow up saying that you realize that one of the things that prevents some people from moving forward with meditation is cost and so you have put together something everyone can afford and get started with right away, etc, etc.
  • As for how many days to wait, I would probably wait 5 to 10 to give them a break.
  • Re: How many emails. I'd treat it like an LTO and go with two or three.
  • Re: The emails. I suppose the first thing that strikes me is that there is a lot of emphasis on needing to do the first lesson first. I totally get that. But if I'm someone who never did the first lesson I'm already behind and now double overwhelmed. Maybe lead with the benefit of what you are about to teach them and then give a call to action. You could add a more casual PS, if you haven't yet tried the first lesson here it is... Kind of a thing after the sig.

At the end of the day this is all just opinion. Your real task here is to be able to put yourself in the shoes of someone reading your emails and ask yourself what you would respond to yourself. Then phrase accordingly.

1. The open rate on the first email is 67% and the emails are 98% deliverable. How do I improve the open rate?

2. Should I add a follow up email and make the cycle 7 days instead of 5? The follow up to the first email would emphasize checking out the freebie. Then the 3rd email would offer my second free lesson. That way maybe more people will have tried it out by the time the sales emails happen.

3. You seem to be very good at writing sales copy and my impression is that's a generic skill that can be honed. How would your pitch letter differ from mine?

4. I'm getting @20% of people clicking on the first lesson link on the 2nd email. In other words, they haven't checked out the first lesson yet, so they are doing that in the second chance i give them. So, that makes me think people are not getting a chance to listen to it first time around. What should I do? Add an extra email before the 2nd freebie making sure they did the first lesson? Or is there some way I can manage it so I don't extend the length of time the sales funnel takes?

1. To improve an open rate you improve your headline. You sometimes also need to consider the first sentence or two that display in the inbox. Also, if you are redirecting to the link as a thank you page after confirming, many people won't bother opening because they already got the info. So make sure you consider that if it's a factor.

2. Despite the fact that I mentioned you COULD do that, I probably wouldn't. I would try to have a second freebie that offered value whether or not they used the first one. View it as a second chance to engage people that perhaps didn't click with teh first offer for whatever reason. You only want to spend "just enough" time building that bond and trust before going for the sale, purely in the sense that you don't want the lead to go cold. That's my approach anyway. Everyone does it differently.

3. I don't have the link handy to the sales letter. Can you send it again? I probably can't read the whole thing as properly analyzing that would likely take 30 minutes to an hour depending on the length, but I can take a glance at it and offer feedback. Copywriting is something that can be honed, for sure, but there is also an art to really good copy that some really have a knack for.

4. I personally just try to keep moving people forward towards the pitch. But I often use the PS to reference the previous content "in case they missed it".

Hope that helps.

I changed the headline for the first email to: Meditate with Music - Open Now For Your Lesson

the "open now" call to action seems to be having a modest impact. No one is getting anything on the thank you page except a call to action to check their email inbox.

I re-read my copy with an objective eye and found it lack luster - lots of info giving and not enough decisive calls to action and impassioned encouragement about what people will get from practice. I'll give it a few days and report back on the click thru rate. If I still need help at that point I'll include the emails in the body of my message...

Sounds good. A good exercise with sales copy can be to open up an email and put a friend's address in the to form. Write out an email that is designed to convince them of why they should take the action you want them to take. For me this tends to force me to speak in a much more natural way and get to the point of what is lacking in their life and how you have a solution. We tend to speak differently when we imagine ourselves speaking to a larger group, and that formality often kills the sales copy. It's some how a lot more natural to just say, hey, you know that problem you were talking about, here's why it's happening and I thought you might really benefit from XYZ. That's helped me anyway. You don't need to send the email. But just imagining them reading it and the possibility of accidentally hitting send, forces you to be real in a way that is surprisingly difficult when you are new to copy. Hope that helps.

Well I think my sales copy may have improved the click thru rate although it's too soon to tell, but I just cannot get people to open that first email with the freebie. I'm still hovering @67% open rate.

I'm currently using the title: Open Now for Your Music Meditation Lesson

It seemed like there was a slight improvement when I used: Music Meditation - Open Now for Your Lesson

So, I thought I'd try the call to action at the front of the email.

Can you suggest another way to get people to open the email? I feel really frustrated because I've consistently been getting leads at under a dollar which I know is great, but I haven't been able to get them to open that first email, so I've spent @$600 for leads and only sold $360 worth of the program because people aren't getting to the sales page...

Hey Julianna,

Sorry for the slow response. We had a really bad storm here and I lost power and internet for 5 days. No fun when you run an internet business :-(

It's interesting. I just checked my own open stats, which I haven't in a while, and saw that my own MMM open rate has dropped down to exactly the same percentage as yours (actually 66%). While my music list remains up around 85%. Kind of weird. I suspect a couple of things...

1. I seem to remember Aweber saying something about having an issue tracking some opens (might have been mobile), and that may be a part of it.

2. It may just be part of the self help nature... I like the idea of improving myself but when push comes to shove I don't want to do anything about it.

3. It may be that after the last Aweber overhaul they started including the subscribers that are not verified in that open rate which makes it seem artificially low. many choose not to verify once they are faced with a confirmation link. You can improve that ratio dramatically by customizing the confirmation message and taking out words such as "subscription" and making it much more personable.

You'd need to contact Aweber to see if any of those might be the culprit behind the low open rates on email one. I suspect it might be #3.

Regardless, I think this is a funnel issue more then it's an #1 open rate issue. I suspect you still need to do some work on the follow up series and sales video/copy. But that is just a guess. Let me know what you find out.
