Hey John,
Since the beginning of this journey back in December, my site has been plagued with tech issues. It started with a bot hack attach which slowed everything down. Then in June I switched hosts which did not solve anything. In fact they started shutting down my site every week because of cpu overload from the bot attacks.
I finally figured out (on my own) that I could use a system called cloudflare, which solved the problem. But cloudflare then opened up a bunch of new problems by breaking links (like the link between clickbank and my membership plugin DAP) and caching pages too aggessively. I also have had major issues with plugins. I don't have extensive plugins. I have one to stream video and an exit popup and a landing page creator. But I've struggled to find decent plugins that don't wreak some kind of havoc on the back end.
The upshot is that all my time and energy is being spent troubleshooting tech glitches on my site. You know me well enough to know what an absurd proposition that is. I'm not trying to do anything terribly complex but for whatever reason, this is the way things have gone. Unfortunately, if this pattern continues as it has been since June, it will literally shut me down.
So, I need to outsource. Odesk has been good to me. My question to you is: what skills am I looking for? I'll give you an example of an issue I'm dealing with right now: I have a video player, simple video pro which I'm using on my landing page howtomeditatewithmusic.com/meditating-with-music that video has not played in 3 weeks and that is the page I've been sending most of my traffic to. At first, I thought the problem was cloudflare caching but that turned out not to be the case. For some unknown reason the video is trying to access an old version of the plugin, despite the fact that I have updated it. It's working fine on another page. When I check the source code on that page, I can see also that there is an exit popup there, popupdomination, which I deleted long ago. My guess is that the remnants of that popup are causing all the problems on the page. that's the only variable that's different on the two pages. But I don't know how to trouble shoot that. Meanwhile it's been 3 weeks with people landing on a page and seeing nothing.
So that's an example to give you an idea. I need someone who would understand the coding or database issues involved in a problem like that and know how to go in and clean up that page so it works properly. I'm really in desperate need of efficiency and proper support at this point.
Can you give me an idea of the skill set I'd be looking for on odesk? Many thanks! Julianna
Man, that is all such a bummer to hear. I have never had any real issues like that. The off hack, but even then they never shut me down. Just put some spammy links into the code of my site. But i don't use many of those platforms you discussed.
It may be that you have some dangerous remnants of code on your site that just keeps breaking things. You could always just set up a new domain and set things up from scratch. Since you're only talking about a few crucial pages you could have that up in an afternoon. You might also try sticking with the more tried and true services. A major host, up to date plugins, use Youtube or easy video player for the video, etc. Though that may or may not be part of the issue.
As far as skill set, I would think you just need someone proficient in wordpress and coding. But I'm not even sure that is the right terminology. have you tried reaching out to @scottjames ? I don't know what his availability is but he has helped me with this kind of stuff in the past.

Yeah... Scott has been incredibly helpful. He's looking into it now. I think cloudflare may be the culprit after all. I'm hosted on hostgator, so nothing weird there. I'll check out easy video.
When I found cloudflare as a solution it solved the hacker problem great, but seems to be creating a slew of other issues. I've had so many of these issues I feel like I need a designated person who can keep on top of it and I can't depend on Scott for that because of his schedule. He just gave me some skills to look for on odesk...
Regarding a new domain I'm actually getting @ 1,000 visitors a month (at least according to hostgator) so I'd kind of like to keep it. When I type a bunch of keyword phrases like "meditate with music" into google my site pops up on the front page, or one of the articles I've written...

Hey Julianna,
That's awesome that you're getting traffic. I haven't had the kind of hacker issues that you've spoken of, but if I were in your shoes I'd consider a plan with a site like wp engine that looks after the maintenance of your website. It's not cheap, but it should reduce or effectively remove your downtime (potentially saving you money).
