Thanks for that John! It occurred to me after I got the likes that I had screwed myself for the reason he describes.
So, it sounds like you're saying that even when I boost my post on my own fan page, the likes and click thrus I get are just an extension of their click farm duties? So, basically meaningless? That's a pretty elaborate foil!
And the fact that my page is now weighted with likes of this nature, makes it difficult for me to direct my spending dollars to the people who would be genuinely interested in what I'm offering.
And there's no way to rectify this by purchasing likes.
Is there any other way to get legitimate likes on your page, en masse? If you do a swap with another fan page, there is no way to know whether they have purchased their page likes.
Based on this video, the system seems irreversibly corrupted with regards to building a fan page following.

That's not quite it. When you boost a post, only actual humans online are seeing your post. Most of those click farm followers are not engaging with their accounts regularly. They most likely have many MANy accounts. When you boost your post your actual followers are seeing it. While edge rank is not something facebook actually shares, my assumption/understanding is that it works like this... You post something and it appears in front of your most dedicated followers. Maybe that's 100 people, who knows. If those people engage then they release it to more people. If they engage they release the post to even more. It's actually not "releasing, rather it's giving-priority-to. When people stop engaging your edge rank drops off and the post falls flat. That's why sometimes a post gets 50 views and sometimes it gets 1000. By boosting a post you are overriding edge rank and making sure you get visibility regardless. Click farms are not a product of FB trying to take advantage of you at all. It is the Pay Per Like services that are screwing you. That said, FB is trying to beef up advertising, and much like Google it is seeming like if you want any real exposure you are going to have to pay for it, or be extremely engaging and viral, which is damn hard on a consistent bases.
In short, with or without click farm likes, you would be running into reach issues with your Facebook Page. Boosts are a cheap work around. Listen to the archive of yesterday's coaching call. I cover a related strategy in the beginning of the call which is getting me slightly better results than boosted posts, but for the same exact purpose. It should be up under the coaching tab later today. Uploading now.

ok thanks! I'll check it out. When I boost my posts I seem to get pretty good engagement and that started happening after I ran my "likes" campaign. So, are you saying the engagement I'm getting on my page as a result of that campaign is legitimate or not? That wasn't clear to me.
Also, need to let you know the loading time for pages in your forum is super slow. I have gotten in the habit of leaving the page and coming back later... when I remember to. Just thought you should know from a user experience perspective it is work...
Hey John - got another question for you about this lesson.
At about the one hour mark, you talk about manually bidding for clicks on your ad, which I get and which is the way I've always done it. Then you talk about letting the ad run for a day or so to let FB get data on your ad's performance, then switching over to bidding on conversions (which I believe is automated, and you can't see what FB is going to bid for you).
My question: is the point of making this switch just to simplify your accounting down the line, so your FB ad dashboard is then actually showing how much you're paying per subscriber? Or is it more that once FB has data on your ad's performance, you'll get a lower CPC when you bid on conversions vs. bidding for clicks?
Thanks!

Hey Mike,
In a nutshell the real reason for doing it would be accounting. In other words you wouldn't have to worry about fluctuations in click price. From day to day my subscriber price varies a lot. It can double one day and then go back to the old price. By setting it you wouldn't be at risk of losing money. That said, I haven't had all that much luck with it and (at least so far) I stick with manually bidding per click. In the video I wasn't saying you SHOULD do it, just that it was an option.
Cheers.
