I just realized that I hadn't posted a thread in the forum on the FB Graph Search module. Has anyone played with FBGS yet? I am really loving this one. I find myself spending hours just digging and digging. Really helpful for find demographic info as well. Curious if anyone else is using it yet and what you guys think? If you've found any cool strings to search I'd love to hear them.

Signed up on the waiting list 3 days ago - still waiting to get in. Looking forward to checking it out, though, esp. for the demographics.

Nice. Took me about 2 or 3 weeks and then it just appeared at the top of my FB page when I logged in one day. I wrote in and let them know I was essentially press and it's possible that helped, though they never even responded. But one way or the other it will be opened up soon. Be sure to share your experiences here once you get in.

Yep, I just signed up too.  Looking forward to playing with it.  Though I left watching the rest of the video for after I get in, so I can follow along.  Today, catching up on past techniques. :)

I finally got graph search and wow, it seems like it will make "marketing research" much easier for me. I'm already finding "common threads"  between people that like the kind of music I play that I hadn't thought of before. The possibilities are exciting!

Yeah, I feel the same way. It's like learning keyword research all over again. I can spend hours looking for connections and commonalities. Such a great way to get in front of a small number of taste makers as well.

Hi John, I had no problem getting the graph search on FB.

I do however have a question. I have my audience and I am wanting to Create an Ad using the Audience. So I hit create and I have a drop down menu only letting me grab on to older ads that I have created but not letting me create something new, like adding a URL of my new landing page and squeeze page. Do you have some advice how to target my audience with a new campaign instead of getting a drop down menu of my older stuff?

Hey Wez,

Assuming I am understanding you correctly I think you are seeing the very first option when you click "create an ad". When you do that you will see a drop down of all of your pages, etc. It can look confusing and you would not be the first person to miss it, but you also have the option of adding a URL at the top of the drop down, right in the field that you should see there. If that is not what you are seeing please provide a screen shot so I can take a look and better understand what you are seeing.

I'm planning to use this to get in front of venues that I want to market to. For right now, I'd like to promote my duo to wineries. My question is not really about how to do the FB (ninja!!) advertising -- you did a great job explaining that! My question is really about what I might use as an enticement to get an email address, and how I might design an email follow-up series. Very simply: Do I throw all my marketing tools at them at once after they give me an email address? And how do I continue to build a relationship with them like I do when I'm selling CDs?

The three things I have as marketing tools are:

Five song EP: http://www.charleylanger.net/f.....ice-EP.zip

Demo video showing live performances:

EPK/bio: http://www.charleylanger.net/f.....er_EPK.zip

Option 1: I could have a squeeze page that says, "Download your free five song EP, video of live performances, and EPK." Then, the first email gives all that stuff to them immediately.

Option 2: I could have a squeeze page that says, "Download your free five song EP." The first email would give them their EP. Then, I could include the video and EPK in my follow-up series. This is similar to how I sell CDs.

I'm thinking I should go with Option 1 because, if I owned or worked for the venue, I would probably want everything at once. But then, what would you do for a follow-up series? Maybe a second email with a couple more free songs and some testimonials from fans/venues? Then in a third email, ask for their business?

I guess I'm sort of answering my own questions as I go along! LOL! Any input? Would you mind taking a look at the video and EPK and let me know what you think?

Thanks!!

Hey Charley,

That's a great question. I guess I see the real benefit of using the Industry Ninja tactic mentioned in the lesson as being just getting your name in front of them. I was thinking less about them actually signing up. So for example, if I was after press. A few months before I made a push I might put some impressive landing pages together that were a bit different than what I used for the average fan. I'd try to make them a tad slicker, and focus more on quick, easy to digest, impressive stats. Maybe a review from someone else, music to sample, etc. Almost like your own Newspaper blurbs. I'd still add the ability to "sign up for some free music", but my expectation would be that industry people would be less likely to sign up, but still likely to click. Then, when I followed up they would know who I was because they would have made a number of impressions.

That make sense?

So... any thoughts on this as a landing page for FB "ninja" PPC ads? Based on your comments, I'm revising my expectations to just becoming more well known to certain people that I think are important to getting local gigs for my duo. If they sign up - great! If not, I'll at least be more familiar to them as I go visit them or send them promo packs.

I like it. It will be such a small audience that it really won't cost you much at all. And each time you get a click you'll know you made an important impression.

I couldn't help but wonder if it would be stronger if you hired someone on Fiverr to do a voice over and actually turn it into a narrative driven commercial of sorts. But I wouldn't have any problem using it as is either.

Definitely separate out the list, if you haven't already. Should you get any sign ups you could then follow up with that person (if you were able to figure out who they were based on name and email). I'm dying to hear what happens here so keep us posted.

For those who are looking for a faster way to collect a lot of IDs, there is a Chrome plugin that will do the trick. It's not free, but it's cheap (currently $25): http://fbgraphscraper.com/jvzoo-sale/

Well, I've had some clicks. And you're right -- it's been cheap ($2.00 so far). About 2/3 of my audience has seen the ad at least once, and the average number of times people have seen my ad is 10. Nobody has downloaded the EP yet, which isn't surprising, since my audience is only 160. But I don't really care because people are seeing my name, and they should have some familiarity with me when Kurt and I go wine tasting! LOL!

I'm going to expand my audience to Napa. Napa is huge, and I'd be surprised if I didn't get a few subscribers from some of the wineries.

I think I'll change up my ads in about a week so that people can get to know me better.

Awesome, I've been waiting for a graph search ID scraper to pop up. Thanks for the share.

As for the ad, that's awesome. So nice to know that you are getting in front of key people for a couple of dollars. I would keep changing things up and running new ads constantly to the same people. I'd even switch things over to right column ads occasionally. Mix up everything so that you appear in multiple ways, many times over. Start a new campaign each time you do it. That way you get that repetition. It's pretty easy to scroll right past a newsfeed ad. I'd almost try to mimic what the experience would be like if you were their friend. They would see constant new posts appearing all the time, with new images. You might even try sharing links to different kinds of media. Reviews, music players, videos, active blog posts, etc. For a few bucks a pop this is money really well spent. I think repetition is going to be key. Really great to see someone using the strategy.

Excellent advice. I'm going to keep them running and just change them up, as you suggested. In fact, I just changed them up now. It is so freakin' easy to do that with the way Facebook is doing their ads now.

I'm really excited about this. How awesome to be able to stay in the face of people who can make a difference in my career--without being obnoxious!!!--for just a few bucks! I'm now expanding my list to the Napa wineries. :-)

I'm laughing at myself for my enthusiasm about this module! I just think it has soooo much potential, and I'm not seeing any other musicians talking about this ANYWHERE!

Just thought I'd mention that I made a subscriber out of a tasting room supervisor, who is exactly the type of person I want to reach, and she did me the favor of "liking" my ad!!

Totally. I'm stoked to see you do it. Because you will have so few subscribers you could even just manually email these people. No mailing list tell tale signs and ultra personalized. Just don't be a stalker :-)

At the very least it's a great way to monitor who is paying attention to your career, so you know who to reach out to first. Imagine their surprise when they get a call from the person they are a subscriber of, looking for a show. Great job Charley.
