Hello All,

I ordered a webcam the other day and will be starting with Street Jelly soon, so I figured I would ask a few questions before I got started. I have lots of material in different genres including cover songs and my own material. Would you suggest doing a variety of everything each day, or do specific music on certain days? (For example: New Age music on Monday, Video Game themes on Wednesday, Classical music on Friday, etc.). I would either perform on one of my woodwind instruments or sing, but not at the same time.

I've been looking for a way to do some live performances without having to pay for a blanket license or play in bars, so a big thanks to John for letting us know about this! I'll keep you all posted on my progress and hopefully all goes well.

Hey Doug,

To be honest, I'm really not sure when you will most likely have the best results. My suspicion is that it will have more to do with time of day then it does genre, but all you can really do is experiment and see what works best for you. I'd start by doing one show in the evening, one mid day, and one at a time when another active performer is scheduled and see what works best in your case. If you schedule something post it here in advance so we can check it out live.

John,

I'm still waiting for my webcam to arrive by mail. It'll be at least another week before I start. When I schedule a show I'll post a link here, but now that I know you'll all be watching I better practice more. Most of the songs I'm doing are cover songs that I threw together in the past two weeks, plus a few covers that I haven't performed in several years. The rest are my originals and arrangements that I've never performed live before. They're designed to be played by an orchestra and choir, so I have to re-arrange them for solo instrument and minus track. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out, hopefully it'll still sound good. Thanks for the tips and I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Alright, here are the results from my first two spontanous shows on Street Jelly:

My webcam arrived earlier then expected, so I decided to a spontaneous show last Friday, just to try it out. I got everything in place, turned on the camera, and announced who I was saying that it was my first time on the website. I was surprised to see people commenting on my page immediately and welcoming me to the site. I started at 8:16pm (MDT) and played for 84 minutes. I had a total of 19 viewers, with a peak of 5 at the same time. I played a set of 20 songs (all video game themes) and received 10 tokens ($1.60) from two different people. I mentioned my squeeze page several times, but go not sign-ups. Not bad for a first spontaneous concert. In fact, one of the first questions I was asked was if I knew John Oszajca. So, the word is getting out that we're joining the site.

The next day, Saturday, I decided to do it again. Mainly because I was very nervous the first time and had made too many mistakes. Also, because I had wasted a lot of time trying to get my minus tracks to play, and I didn't enter my set list properly. (I suggest adding all your songs to your "My Repertoire" page before your first concert. It makes things a lot easier). This time I wasn't nervous at all, and things went more smoothly. I started at 7:41pm (MDT) and played for 64 minutes. I had a total of 18 viewers, with a peak of 8 at the same time. I played a set of 15 songs (movie themes and new age music) and received 20 tokens ($3.20) from one person, which included a Standing Ovation pin. I'm still trying to understand completely what these pins are and how to earn them. I didn't have any viewers at the beginning, but after a few songs I started getting comments. I even recognized two people that had commented the day before and came back to watch me again. I mentioned my squeeze page once at the end of the show and received one sign-up. I forgot to check my squeeze page stats before the show. So, I have no idea how many actually went to my page, but 1 sign-up out of 18 viewers is a really good conversion rate (5.6%). Let's hope I can keep that up.

I've scheduled my next concert for Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 8:30pm (MDT). I've included a link to my Street Jelly page below, since I didn't see any links for that specific show. Hopefully, that link will work. If not, I'm currently listed on the home page. (The thumbnail is a picture of me holding the paper with my squeeze page site address on it. They took the shot right before I held it up to the camera for all to see. The site warns you right before it's going to take a thumbnail picture, but I was too busy advertising my squeeze page to notice it.) I'll let you all know how it goes. I will most likely play a little bit of everything I have in different genres. Who knows, I may even sing something, but we'll have to wait and see.

That's awesome Doug. That's funny that someone mentioned me. What was the context? Fellow IC member or site moderator do you think?

I'd be curious to see if shorter shows get you approximately the same ROI, as Dean's did. But perhaps you need a better control stat first. Great job on taking action. I marked your show on my calender and if I can drop by I definitely will. Just all depends how crazy the kids are at that particular moment :-)

Break a leg.

John,

Her name was Sharon Gay. I've seen her on Street Jelly a lot. Someone you know? I announced who I was and I think I mentioned my squeeze page. Then she asked if I knew you. I should have asked if she was an IC member.

Stop on by tomorrow if you can. I'll probably do the same show again on Friday. I'll let you know the stats when they're done.

Thanks Doug. I don't recognize the name off hand. But thanks for the info.

I'll definitely do my best to check it out tonight. I'll likely only be able to stick around for a few songs before one of my kids pulls me away from the computer (so don't take it personally if I jump at some point), and if I can't make it then I'll shoot for the next one.

Have a great show.

John,

I asked Sharon tonight during the show and she is indeed an Insider Circle member. Thanks for watching tonight! I tried a 90 minute show, and it was way too long. In the future I won't go over 60 minutes. My brain turned off during the last few songs and I was making too many dumb mistakes. I just couldn't think straight. I'll probably split my repertoire into genres and do them on separate nights.

Anyway, here are the results from show. As you know the site kicked me off in the middle and I had to start another show. So, I've combined the results from both. Start time: 8:30pm. Duration: 96 min. 26 total viewers. 10 peak viewers. 15 tokens ($2.40). 21 song set list. 3 visits to my squeeze page, and so far no sign-ups.

I've scheduled another show for Friday at 8:30pm, and we'll see how that one goes.

Cool Doug. I recognize Sharon's image icon. But for whatever reason I don't see her name in my order history. She must have ordered under a different name.

It was fun to check out the show. You had a nice little community there. In my opinion the shows are too long with not enough pitches in them, but that is just my opinion. I know Frank suggests that longer is better. But it seemed like the formula Dean was doing was working well for him and those were typically short sets where he would play a lot of the tracks he was giving away and then pitch the squeeze page after almost everyone. That would start to feel like a lot in a 60 min plus set, but makes sense for a short one. Only time will tell what was best for you.

I'd also make sure to plug your URL into chat in the beginning and end of set. That should help. Great job last night.

John,

Yes, I agree. Shorter is better. I'm going to start doing a bunch of shorter shows instead, and we'll see how that works. I was going to type my URL into the chat box, but for some reason I forgot. I played for too long I guess and lost my brain power.

I'll keep trying different variations, and will figure out what works best. These things always require a lot of experimentation. Split testing applies to everything. Next show is tomorrow at 8:30pm.
