This lesson was a fun one. It comes as the result of a request made my IC member, Brian Chris Rogers. Brian had requested a lesson on podcasting for musicians in the forum. Not only did I record the lesson, but I also invited Brian to sit in and ask questions along the way; insuring that I address all of the questions that might be on the average musician’s mind.

A big thank you to Brian for sitting in! If you’d like to check out his music (which you should) you can download a few free tracks at http://www.brianrogersmusic.com.

Click here to watch the lesson.

If you have any questions about the strategies discussed in the lesson, please post them below.

I hope you enjoy the lesson.

Thanks John & Brian,
the lesson was quite timely as I'd just been doing my own first podcast attempt. My one's completely different though as it's not aimed at generating income but just as an experiment in adding a bit of glue to my tribe of mailing-listers via their tastes in music.

I sent an email out to everyone asking for a tune recommendation. As well as just being a nice way to hear some new music it helps give me some guage of what else people listen to alongside my own musical efforts. In terms of putting it up online, mixcloud seems fine to put music shows up on.

If you fancy a listen it's here:

(My voice is distorted as I'm a lo-fi one-man band and the distortion's very much in-keeping with the vocal quality of my music).

Sounds good Keith. How are you handling the licensing aspect of things? Meaning, how are you getting permission to play other people's music?

Hello John,
As far as I'm aware, Mixcloud seem to have it covered? It's not something I've looked into though to be honest but I know a few other people who put their shows up there with no issues. I've been putting up a lot of my old tape recordings of John Peel radio shows over the last couple of years and haven't had any problems.

Cool. I'm not familiar with them. At a glance it does look like they cover licensing.

Where are you allowed to distribute your feed? Can you add it to iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and Amazon? Or are you limited to the MixCloud platform?

I haven't looked into or even thought about any of that so have no idea, sorry. It's only my first one and all too low key at this stage to feel worth the time, effort and expense. It wasn't intended as an income generator and will probably only be something I do once a year as an interesting bonus for those on the mailing list. Obviously if I get amazingly enhusiastic feedback on it then maybe I'll reconsider but, although very enjoyable to do, it did take quite a bit of time to put together, and at this stage I feel my time would be better served focussing on other things.
