I think it was in this video that you briefly touched on the idea of other musicians swapping links, but if I rememeber correctly, you said not to put a link on your page to theirs while they put a link on that same page to your page because Google detects this as a "link swap" and does not count it.
Is there somewhere where it is explained the "correct" way to link swap with another band for link building/SEO ?
Thanks.
Hey Tim,
It's not that Google will not count it but rather that it contributes to a negative footprint. In other words if you had an unnaturally high percentage of backlinks from sites that you also pointed to Google would probably think you were up to no good. But a two way link here and there is not really going to hurt you. To avoid this footprint most webmasters link like this. Webmaster 1 inks his site A to web master 2's site B. And in return web master B links his site to webmaster A's site C.
That make sense? It's just better and safer practice.

So each webmaster in this case needs to have 2 domains? One to link out, and the other one to receive the backlink?
Basically yes, most web masters who are actively engaged in SEO have a network of sites so it's not usually an issue. A link swap or two is not going too be a big deal. But as a general rule i would go easy on the direct ink swaps. The three way link swap is a safer approach.

So does that mean it would make sense to have the links page on my site actually be on another url?
Hey Annie,
Having a "links" page is a bit old school. Most backlinks are simple links from within content. So for example, lets say you had someone who wanted a backlink for the keyword "guitar lessons". Rather than having a page of links on your site which wouldn't have a lot of value these days, most people would just find (or create) a sentence on a new or existing blog post that had that word in it and link. No explanation or pitch is required.
It's always a good idea to have multiple sites. One as your main page, and then several other smaller niche sites targeting valuable keywords.
Then when you get a backlink opp you can get someone to link to one of your sites, and in return you use a different site to link back to theirs. Make sense?
