Back catalogue funnels

Hi John, hope you're well. I'm going to be kicking off an album release campaign in a few months' time, and am thinking of setting up a test funnel before then, to get me used to the kinds of strategies I'll be using once the album is out. Since the current album is still being mastered, the test funnel would be focused on my last album, which came out in 2017. Have you or your clients had any success in approaching a cold audience with music that's several years old, and are there any special considerations to take into account when doing so? Or would you always recommend trying to use current/recent music as the entry point into the funnel, even if some back catalogue is contained in an upsell?

I'm also wondering about potential audience reach on Facebook, and what kind of a minimum audience size I should be aiming for to allow FB to do its thing. I'm an alternative pop act (similar artists would be people like Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear, Talking Heads), so my potential audience reach is likely to be lower than a band targeting Ariana Grande or Drake fans (for the record, I like both those artists, I just don't sound like them!). Obviously there's a pay-off between being too narrow and not being targeted enough, but is there a specific number you generally advise people to aim for?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Tom,

Testing now is definitely a good idea. This stuff isn't always easy and you'll want to wrap your head around it before the release .

And yes, promoting older albums is not a problem. One of the nice things about this approach is that everything is new for the subscriber, and many MMM students have had big wins this way. Streaming benefits from new content cycles, but sales strategies don't demand it.

Large audiences are better than small audiences. But you can do well with anything over a couple hundred thousand. That said, I tend to like audiences around a million. And too large can be a problem as well, so if I had an audience of 5 MM I might try to narrow that down a little. But, for example, Talking Heads should be fine.

These days the goal is usually to get your first two hundred subs or so as you test different audiences and then create a lookalike audience, which usually yields better results. That's not 100% the case, but more often than not that's how it goes.

Hi John,

That's brilliant, thanks a lot. Having concrete numbers laid out like that is really helpful, and yes, I see what you mean about everything being new for a cold audience. I'll get building!

Thanks again,

Tom

Hey John, quick follow-up on this. My Facebook page has 216 likes and 238 followers. I also have an e-mail list of 269 people, though I don't know how many of these are active Facebook users. Do you think I'd be better off asking FB to build a lookalike based on this data, or to target fans of another band? I guess one argument against the lookalike audience is that I'd have less data on the exact type of fan I'm targeting, so it would be harder to tailor copy. It's also the case that most of my existing followers are in the UK/Europe, whereas I think my campaign will target North America. Interested to hear your thoughts on this!

Facebook followers are much less valuable than subscribers and that's a pretty small number. Even with large audiences, lookalikes based on FB followers don't tend to perform as well as lookalikes based on subs (at least for me) so I'd personally target similar artists for now until you get a couple hundred subs. Then create a lookalike from those. That said, there is no harm in trying, other than potentially losing a few bucks. But you might get lucky.

Hey John, hope you're having a great week. I've started having a play with my initial ad copy, and it would be great to hear your thoughts if you have time! Attached is a screenshot of the ad draft from my ads manager. Some context:

I'd be targeting Talking Heads fans, both genders, aged 25-54, based in United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

The thing I'm struggling with is that my ideal fan would be more enticed by the promise of something original/surprising, rather than a soundalike of a band they already enjoy. With this in mind, I'm trying to stay away from any "for fans of Talking Heads" type copy. At the same time, I do need to make it clear that this is experimental pop music (song-based, melodic), as opposed to free jazz or avant garde classical.

Interested to know what you reckon! Also, I'm sure you cover this elsewhere, but how long would you typically leave an ad running to judge whether it was working or not?

Hey Tom, for me, your ad copy is a bit vague. I don't know what a rest zone for the imagination actually means and inventive could literally be any good musician from Rap to Country. It's a nice phrase but it doesn't align with specific pre-existing interests (at least that I can imagine). I think it's important that we really try and align our music with specific qualities that our audience is consciously interested in.

That said, if you tried it and got good results. Then to hell with what I just said and great job 🙂

I am not a fan of "if you are a fan of that artist then you'll love this artist", but I am a fan of saying things that really describe your music and then qualify it with a tag on like "following in the footsteps of artists such as". Or, "in the tradition of". I don't rely on that comparison to sell my offer, but I make it to offer additional clarity on what I mean. Take your ad copy for example... I still think it's too vague, but even by tagging on the sentence "in the tradition of artists like..." would make me 500% clearer on what your music was like.

That make sense?

That's super helpful John, thank you. Yes, I can see that it needs to be much clearer, and that makes perfect sense about bringing in other artists as a qualifier rather than as a main hook. I'll have a proper look at this later, but I'm confident it can be vastly improved!

Thanks John! I've been having another look at this, and have done a couple of new versions. Do either of these look more promising?

Hey Tom,

Yeah, I think they are an improvement and are worthy of testing. The only thing that hung me up was the word idiosyncratic. It's a big word that makes someone think, if only for a micro-second. And we are trying to be specific here, and the word literally highlights a lack of specificness. So I think you could be more precise here, but it may be that the word is heady and appeals to a heady crowd who can decode what you are doing because of the references. So give it a go and see what happens. If they don't perform well, take that advice on board.

Awesome, thanks a lot. OK, yes, I'll give it a go (once I have the other elements in place!). How long do you usually leave an advert to run in order to see if it's working or not?

It's a balancing act between statistical significance and just being smart and not throwing good money after bad. Technically the algorithm needs 3- 5 days before it starts to settle. However, in contrast to that, if after 24 hours I had zero subs, I might consider killing the campaign. It really depends. It also depends what I'm measuring.

Thanks a lot John, really helpful, as ever! Yes, I was unsure how long the algorithm might take to kick in, but since the algorithm needs some subscribers to base future activity on, it makes sense that you'd turn it off if the first day didn't yield anything. Hopefully that won't happen, but we shall see!
