Hi John,

we have a song which we want to pitch to blogs.

For some blogs on our target list that prefer darker music, our single might not be ideal because it's on the brighter side, however we are not sure if they might like it anyway or not, because the genre is still correct.

I've heard that some blogs blacklist you if you send them music that's not appropriate, however in this case it's borderline. It's still within their genre but they just might think it's too bright for them.

So I have two questions

1. I don't want to ruin our chances in the future if we pitch them a song that is questionable for them. so I'm wondering if you know how they operate regarding that?

2. my second question is do you think it might be a good idea to pitch them a second song along with the first which might be more appropriate for them, even though we really want to push the brighter song as our first single?

we would be hedging our bets.

it's possible they may want to post both, or they might choose the darker song.

The downside of pitching both is that we wouldn't be giving a proper promotional push for the darker song. It would only be used as a "backup".

the upside of pitching both would be that we can give away both singles in a package rather than just giving away one single, and we would get double the promotion, although sacrificing the darker song in the long run without giving a proper promotional push to it.

Please advise

Thanks

Hi Michael,

I don't have any knowledge of some blanket rule that says you will "get blacklisted if you pitch the wrong song" but these are humans at the other end of these submissions and if you do something they perceive as a waste of time then it seems logical that they could decide to filter you out of their inbox. So I would just think about it from their perspective. A respectful submission that acknowledges that the song is a little outside of what they normally do, but you felt was relevant for XYZ reason seams reasonable to me, so long as you don't do it too often.

That said, with so many sites and so little time, it may be best to stay focused on the more obvious sites for each track.

Being black balled would not be a massive concern to me though.

Hope that helps.
