I can tell you've had many questions about Facebook pixels; but I'm still unclear about something.
Are the conversion pixel and the retargeting pixel two different pixels?
Or is it one pixel being used for both purposes?

You just have the one pixel, typically. Then you create a custom conversion goal or a custom audience. You retarget a custom audience you track conversions with the custom conversion. Make sense?
