I was just sitting around thinking about a fan who had just bought a CD at
full price, and how I should go about catching people and showing them that
for only a few bucks more they could get a shirt or whatever other bundles I
have on my merch page; in other words, attempt an "upsell."

I've seen lots of comments regarding upsells, but I'm not sure how to make
the above scenario happen. I'm envisioning someone clicking on my Paypal
link to buy the CD, then somehow grabbing their attention with "Hey, for only
a few bucks more you could have this TOO!" type offer.

There are two ways to do it.

The simple way: Once someone orders they should be forwarded to a thank you page, whatever your payment solution might be. In that thank you page there should be some copy, a video, whatever that says something to the effect of "Wait, before you proceed to the download page I have something for you... state your offer". At the bottom of the copy there would be an order link and a "no thanks, proceed to download page" or something to that effect.

The best way to do it: Involves getting some kind of one-click-upsell software. It costs a bit of money though. 1shoppingcart offers one but it's pricey. You could shop around for cheaper solutions

Here is a pretty terrible one for MMM. I just threw it up. I say it's terrible because the video is directly from the sales page. https://www.mmmanifesto.com/in.....rial2.html It should be a custom video that outlines the offer and the video should be more prominent. I just need time to update it. It still converts at about 15%. Please don't share that link outside of this forum.

Hope that helps.

Ok, I think that will get me pointed in the right direction.

Thanks, John!

and related to this, I'm wondering how you launch a membership site so it immediately instills confidence. I'm concerned that if the site isn't populated enough, either with people or content, that will affect new members' confidence in the product and could also undermine your relationship with your jv partner(s) if people from their list decide it's not worth it. I'm trying to recall... did you have the forum in place when you first launched insider circle or did you wait a few months?

I think the fear is valid, but at the same time you can't really worry about it. Just create something awesome and the will come. I launched the IC and the forum at the same time and when I did there were all of 4 posts in here. Now there are thousands.

With that said, there are no rules that say you need a forum. Most membership sites don't have them because they require so much of a time commitment. What matters is regular content and user engagement. Heck, there are thousands of membership sites out there that consist of nothing more than regular emails. You can set this up any way you like. All that is important is that people engage and get regular content that kicks ass.

ok... guess I'm gonna have to bite the bullet! Laugh Is creating an app an involved/costly process? Can you recommend someone to do it? I thought that would be a nice freebie to offer people for my meditation site...

Depends what kind of app you want and if you want to offer it in the itunes store or not. They can be anywhere from hundreds of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Also meant to add to the first question, depends on if you are talking bout music or the income project. I still say it doesn't matter, but I would start with an album simply because the consumer is used to it.

Hi John, I'd like to create a meditation app. I don't think I would offer it in itunes... I think it would be a freebie for my squeeze page. Alternatively, I could offer a free 10 minute downloadable meditation which would be simpler to create, but thought an app might be cool if it wasn't too costly...

You could definitely go that way, and it could be very cool. Only thing is that apps are a bit difficult and can be expensive if you want to do anything complex. I also don't necessarily think they would have that much additional appeal, as compared to an audio quick start  into meditation (kind of thing) lesson. And that would be infinitely easier for you to do and would potentially have a higher perceived value as an audio class could sell for as much as $50 where as an app has a price cap on it of only a few bucks in most people's minds. Then there is the fact that not everyone has an iphone which could limit your reach as well. I'd keep it simple and maybe look at an itunes app down the road more as a source of new traffic. The itunes store is a pretty big search engine in it's own right.

you've sold me! Why make this more difficult for myself with no real added value? I'll get some momentum and do it down the road as suggested. Thanks John!!!
