OfflineI do covers every now and then. If I'm only doing it for YouTube or my membership site, I tend to just do it and not worry about it, but every now and then I want to release it on streaming platforms and stuff, and then I get it properly licensed, which is super easy and pretty cheap to do. There's a site called Easy Song Licensing that gets it done in a day or two, for a small fee. I've done three cover releases over the past year or so, and it was a breeze.
If you're going to release an album with a cover song on it, you absolutely need to get it licensed. Otherwise I imagine you could get into a lot of trouble. But again, it's really easy and cheap, so no reason not to do it.

Hey Mathew,
For liability reasons I can't offer any advice that goes against the letter of the law. And covering a song without paying for it is not legal. However, many do it without issue, nd I think Eyvi outlined that perspective pretty well.
