Quite some time ago, I made a page on Facebook, long before I knew that there was a separate section for bands and musicians. I have since made a page in the musicians/bands section, but facebook won't let me cancel my original page and just keep the newer one in the musicians/band section. I tried de-activating both pages, and then tried to open a new account in just the musicians/band section, but Facebook won't allow it, saying there is already an account with my email address. I have re-activated both pages, but it is pretty confusing, because when people do a search for me, both pages come up. Also, when I make a change in my profile photo on one page, it also changes on the other page. I want to use my page in the musicians/band section to drive traffic into my sales funnel, but the two page issue is causing problems. Has anyone else experienced anything like this, and if so how did you correct it? I would rather not have to deal with another email address and password just so I can have a Facebook account

Hey Greg,
There are two different kinds of facebook setups, personal profiles and 'pages'. Your personal profile is intended to be for your friends and people you know personally. Pages are designed to be for the general public, which would be where an artist page would come into play. You need a personal profile in order to have a page. To the public, your profile and your page are both separate entities. You can choose to post a link to your personal profile from your page, but by default they are kept separate to the general public. If you only want to use facebook to control your music page then you could adjust your privacy settings so that your profile isn't searchable on facebook. That way only your artist page would come up when people search your name. Make sense?
Yeah...it's starting to! Thanks so much for your reply. I was starting to reach that conclusion, but it helps to hear it from someone else

OK, I got the facebook "personal profile" and "Page" situation all figured out. Now I am trying to make my "Band Profile" from ReverbNation be the landing page on Facebook musician/band page. I have followed all the steps as oulined on ReverbNation, and also on Facebook.....Go to edit page settings, set the default landing tab to "Band Profile" and click on "save changes". I've gone through those steps probably 20 times now, and even though the page settings shows Band Profile for the landing page, it still keeps opening with the "wall" instead of Band Profile. Any ideas?

Hey Greg,
Yeah, one very important thing to know about that is that only visitors who have not yet 'liked' the page will see the landing page you've chosen. Everyone who has 'liked' the page will see the wall by default. If you log out and then type in the URL to your page you should see the ReverbNation page.

That may explain a few things??? On my son's computer, the page shows up how it is supposed to. On my computer, even though I shut it down and restarted, and deleted all cookies, it still comes up showing my wall instead of band profile. I then made a hotmail address for my dog, created a facebook account for him and searched my page from his account, and it still came up showing the wall instead of band profile. At this point I'm not going to worry about it anymore, at least for now. Too many other things to take care of!
Thanks for your reply

Thanks John. It would be nice if Facebook was a little clearer about how things are supposed to work! Setting up ReverbNation was a breeze compared to Facebook. Or maybe I'm just starting to get the hang of this stuff. Or maybe I need to shut off this damn computer and get some sleep!

Hi Greg,
Yes, I've had exactly the same issues with wanting set up an artist profile page with facebook. Deleted or rather "deactivated" my original a/c because of course you can't actually "delete" your FB a/c. My old a/c kept reactivating instead of allowing me to start a new one etc. I'm convinced it's a macarbre game been put in play to incite artists to chew off their own faces by a pack of geeks who can now afford the entertainment value of being user-unfriendly.
Of course, at the end of the day, their twisted game will all prove to be "logical" so the artist looks like the idiot and not them. Hey, they're just trying to be helpful right? Anyway, I'm with you brother. I abandoned getting myself too worked up about it a while back 'cause it was making me furious. I put it on the back burner and focused on something I like.
This post has been helpful. When my tolerance levels are rejuvinated I'll give it another crack. So thanks Greg for raising the issue and also thanks to Scott for pointing a way towards a solution that I can get my head around. If anyone has a "step-by-step flow chart" on how this can be set up & managed properly I'm sure there would be grateful/interested artists on facebook who have up-to-now just resigned themselves to their main a/c profile because they don't need all the grief.

Hey Tommy
I might be able to come up with a flow chart. I have been doing a bit of research and finding some good info, and that, along with the previous posts in this string are starting to clear things up for me. Facebook has recently changed thier rules, and I think when the dust settles, it will prove to be beneficial for musicians. I will try to put something together by next week, after I get more familiar with the new facebook and do some testing with my own page. ReverbNation seems to have already jumped on the bandwagon with the changes in Facebook, and if you set up an account with them (it's free) they have a section that will walk you step by step through at least part of setting up your facebook band/musician page. Don't feel alone with your frustration...I came across a site that was discussing the new facebook, and the comments that were being left indicated that many people are having major problems.

Hi Greg,
Yes, I've had my reverbnation page on my facebook's band page for a while but that's it. No fans or anything and I don't even understand how to get them or transfer them from my facebook's main a/c page. Both my facebook's main page and the artist page have exactly the same page name "Tommy Roberts" which makes things confusing. Before, I also had the same profile pic on both pages so it was just very frustrating/BS. Anyway, cool. It will be good to see what you come up with!

Hey Tommy,
The issues you mentioned are some of the same ones I keep seeing over and over, and I think I have found some ways to deal with them. I haven't had time to finish reading and testing all the info I have found so far, and I have a road gig for the next three days, but hopefully by early next week I'll have some solutions for you......and me as well!

What you have caught onto here is something that you might be able to offer other musicians in the same squeeze page fashion as marketing your music. You know something free in exchange for contact information. There may not be a huge market for it, but you can't really predict the true value of a subscriber until they are one 😉
Just a thought, Greg.

Hey Tommy,
I personally just have Reverbnation page because it's extra rel estate and because of that handy Facebook app. I never touch my Reverberation page, ever. But like anything, if you work it, I'm sure there is a lot of traffic to be had there.
As far as the confusing element goes, it shouldn't be too bad. The category is what sets them apart. When people search your name, your page will come up under the heading "pages" and your profile will come up under "people". The absence of a "add as friend" button is also a tell that people are pretty familiar with these days.
I'd basically just try to use your profile for your actual friends and your page for your fans. People will get the hang of it. The most important thing with FB is to post often and try and solicit comments. If people don't interact with your page then you will be left at the bottom of the "top posts" on a persons wall, and that is the default setting on FB. That just means that if people don't interact with you, your posts will not be seen by many users.
And to address some of the other issues about not being able to get the desired page to appear as the landing page... FB is not without bugs. That was a bug a while back in the advertising network. It may very well be a bug for regular users as well. Just have a friend go to your page, unlike you, and then go back to your page. If they still see your wall then chances are it's a bug.

Again, I've just been trying to get my head around the different ways the FB profile and FB Musician page operates as I've just posted another couple of PR's and these ones allow for your facebook profile (plus a bunch of other things) to be in the PR.
After having submitted I realised I had linked my FB "profile" rather than my "page". I'm hoping I can get some serious hits from these PR's so I hunted down my FB page's very long numeric URL and edit that (instead of my simple profile URL) in to my PR's. Thankfully, I did it before the PR's were approved and published so it should all be good (ie: Likes/Fans to that FB "page" and not my FB - friends - "profile").
I figured I should do the same thing with the icon/badge links to facebook I'd posted on my website. Not so simple. The FB badges will allow me to do it for my FB profile but not for my page. I guess it's a glitch that FB needs to address. Also they will need to create an app that can transfer all the Fans who have joined the FB "profile" as "Friends" to the Artist/Musician page as "Fans" (assuming there is a Fans List on the FB "page"…haven't got any yet so haven't seen it if there is?)
FYI, I've submitted my new PR's through John's suggestion of trying "onlineprnews" . I think he said he's going to interview them soon or something? Anyway, I tried the $22 option and submitted in both (a) Entertainment category (b) Music category. Let me know if you're interested in my feedback and I can follow up about these new PR's by continuiing the thread of my original Post titled "My First Press Release" (in the other forum)?
Cheers,
T.

Hey Tommy,
That's great to hear that you're giving the press releases a go.I do have an interview coming very soon with the owner of onlineprnews.com. It should help. I plan to use them next.
I doubt FB will ever allow you to transfer names form profile to page as they see the profile as something for personal use and a page for business or promotional use. But you never know.
I have no experience with using FB for the link in a press release. As you know I'm a much bigger fan of the squeeze page. Just make sure that your call to action reflects what you are trying to get them to do.

I recently read something about Facebook transfering all of your "friends" on your profile page to "likes" on your musician/band page as an option when setting things up. I'm still looking into that and will post again when I find out for sure.

Tommy, if you go to your fan page and look in the upper right corner, beneath where it shows who the page admins are, you should see some options like: "Notifications," "Promote with Ad" etc. One of those options should be "Suggest to Friends."
Clicking this will open a box of your friends from your personal profile and you can pick which ones to suggest the page to. I wouldn't recommend hitting a whole bunch at once, just every week or two, go in and pick a few more that you think will honestly like your music. I stick to people that I have met in person and have expressed interest in the band, or people that I know for a fact listen to the same type of music because I know them "online."
Tim
Thanks Tim, this is what I needed to know. I have some "Friends" on my profile and I have no idea who they are. I'm sure they probably expected to be joining my artist page in the first instance ('cause that's how my profile looks - all about my songs) so I'll just transfer them to my page the way you say and they can leave or stay. Fuck, I can't help but rhyme!
Cheers, T.
