Hi John, great talking earlier on the coaching call. I just wanted to follow up to give you some numbers and an idea of some images and copy.

To recap I ran ads to a Lookalike Audience of a Custom Audience (50% of music video watched). That ad has a relevance score of 10.  Link clicks are costing me 0.47 and I have 25 of them at the moment. I have a Link CTR of 2.92 but only 2 conversions. (BTW general CTR is 6.31 and Cost per general Click is 0.22 but I think thats irrelevant?)

The two screen shots below are the ad and the squeeze page. I changed the squeeze page headline on day two (today), from which I've gotten no conversions so far. I'll probably go back to the original headline, which was: "Crank The Bass, Crack A Cold One And Grab a FREE Download From A Refreshingly Eccentric Bass Rocker Who Is - NOT Your Standard Bass Phenom, But Doing Something Brand New..." It looked clunkier but was more effective.

I guess another headline I can use would be the same text I used in the ad, which is: "Turn up the bass, crack a cold one, and listen to this..." Just seems short.

So two things I'm thinking going forward:

1. start a new campaign optimized for traffic instead of conversions

2. headline on the squeeze page seems to be what I should split test next, since we can assume the picture is good? (due to the 10 relevance score on the ad)

Any feedback is welcome, thanks John!

I definitely like the image.

I'm surprised that your CPC is that high for an ad with a relevancy score of 10. I am just guessing here, but I wonder if what is happening is that your existing audience is getting lumped in there and they are liking the ad, but not actually clicking because they have seen it. You could try excluding people that like your page just to filter those people out. It might make your relevance score go down but it would possibly keep your costs down.

I would probably try switching to a traffic based campaign without making any other changes (except maybe excluding your existing audience) first. Then I would start tweaking individual elements. But not all at once.

Hey John, so things may look a little different but I'm getting some interesting results on my new campaign.  My ad has dropped from an 8 relevance to a 7, my CTR has dropped from 2.95 to 1.95, and my lead price has gone up from $3 to $3.65.

But the squeeze page has 47 displays and 12 signups, putting it at 25.5% so far.

That tells me to stick with the squeeze page for now, but split test the cheesy part of the ad which is the headline. The ad copy is identical to the squeeze page and so is the photo, and the link description I could do without but before I test that I think I want to try a different headline first.

Q. Would you scrap this campaign and start a new one order to run that split test? <====

Also, the ad thats currently running is the 1st one below, I call that one A. The ad that that I want to test it against has a different headline and its either B1 or B2 below - Q. do you personally lean toward B1 or B2? <==== ***BTW my audience is Prince EA, narrowed by people who also like bass guitar, USA and Canada, 35-55, Size is 110,000 and I'm spending 15 bucks on one ad in the set - when I do 2 ads I'll spend 30 on the ad set.

Here's the squeeze page: http://www.brianrogersmusic.co.....page-test/ - its a test page so it doesn't have a form but its a standard form and the fields say First Name: and Email:

Hey Brian,

I'm a little lost as to which is B1 or B2, etc. The ads appear to be identical aside from the headline, but it's the main text that tends to have the best results.

I have a couple of detached thoughts...

I like the picture, I'm not sure I love the whole incense thing personally. But it may just be that I am not your target audience. One thing I have noticed is that (unless I am forgetting) you have stuck pretty closely to my example headline in MMM for many years. You sort of just change the food/drink/smoke item and the main keyword. I'm wondering if maybe you could do more to infuse yourself and the ultimate quality of your music and brand. Just thinking out loud.

I am totally just spitballing here but I just sort of asked myself, how would I describe Brian to a friend, and what came was something like "Brian Rogers is a Nouveau Beatnik Bassist/Songwriter who has fused the eccentric Bass style of players like Les Claypool with the smooth, laidback sound of artist like Jack Johnson and Tracy Chapmen."

Not saying that is perfect, but I think that makes me get a sense of what you sound like, without actually saying, If you like x, then you'll like z, and without putting the emphasis on the ambiance. I wanted to add something about your scatty vocal approach, but I thought it became too busy for a headline. I tried to solve it by adding Nouveau Beatnik, as it implies poetry and spoken word and has some romantic imager surrounding it.

But to answer your actual question 🙂

I almost never edit or add to a campaign that isn't working as well as I want it to. I scarp it and start again.

And if your squeeze page is working but your ads have low relevance scores even though it is identical to the squeeze page copy, my thinking would be that the targeting is off, at least fro this particular ad.

I might be wrong but my feeling would be to remove people who like bass from your audience. I think you throw musicians back into the audience in a big way and that might hurt your results as they see themselves as peers rather than fans. I would tread carefully with narrowing things down and definitely start without narrowing the audience just to see if it;s even close. Then you can combine two audiences that are close (by narrowing) with more confidence. Which you may be doing here.

Hope that helps.

Hey John,

To say I'm a little late on the response here is the understatement of the year (and last year). But this headline you wrote:

“Brian Rogers is a Nouveau Beatnik Bassist/Songwriter who has fused the eccentric Bass style of players like Les Claypool with the smooth, laidback sound of artist like Jack Johnson and Tracy Chapmen.”

I dig it. So, starting with a headline like this, how would you approach targeting/who would you target?

Thanks man!

I would start by targeting each of the artists in the headline, being sure to create a unique ad set for each targeting option.

Good to see you back in the forum.
