Hey John, I've got some stats I want to go over. I'm trying to figure out why I'm getting a huge drop off after the first email.
Here's some quick background info first: Targeting isn't the issue because our ads are all 9's and 10's and I'm getting good subscriber costs. There's dozens of comments throughout the funnel that are overwhelmingly positive. I rarely get a negative one.
My last campaign got a 3.37% sales conversion. The Upsell is at 20%. One sale came from the LTO. Most people are buying before they get there which is great, just a little odd. These seem like good numbers considering the low email stats.
With all this being said it just doesn't make sense that the email opens and clicks aren't good.
Here's the best I've been able to get.
Email #1 85% opens 73% clicks
Email #2 38% opens 13% clicks
Email #3 41% opens 13% clicks
Email #4 38% opens 3% clicks
Email #5 24% opens 13% clicks
Email #6 31% opens 4% clicks
We have worked on the emails in the IC and they are pretty good.
I have been surveying the list and I'm not getting anything that's really helping. About 85% are rating their experience positive. I did have one person say that they only read emails but I'm not certain that this is what is going on.
I know it isn't the free tracks I'm giving away either. I added links in the free music email to a page where subscribers can stream the music and leave comments. I've gotten a lot and they are all positive. I'm gonna try turning this into a sells page. Some are listening to the music and liking it enough to purchase before they get the LTO so it's worth a try.

What a bummer... I wrote a 20 minute response to this the other day and thought I had sent it. I must have failed to hit send and navigated away without realizing it. Will do my best to reply again.
My first thought is that you can't assume that your targeting is not the issue just because you have a strong quality ranking. It's very easy to create a solid ad/squeeze page combo that ultimately loses people because either the music, or the content in the funnel is not ideal for that audience. I see this kind of thing all the time. That said, your targeting may very well not be the problem.
The next thought I have is that while 38% is low, it's not shockingly low. If it was 45% we'd be thinking it was relatively ok. And that's just a few points off. There are times where funnels convert pretty well, but alienate their audience. Sometimes there is a strong, those who love it love it, and those who hate it hate it, factor.
The fact that most people are buying before they get to the LTO is definitely different. I don't normally see that. That makes me wonder if possibly people love the music but don't like the funnel content much. So those that love it buy quickly, and then the funnel drives people away. If that was the case you could almost do better just sending sales pitch emails over and over again than you could building relationships. I'm not recommending that, but it's interesting. You can either test this theory by creating alternative funnels to try and boost conversions, or just go in with a more heavier pitch to buy and see what happens. If they love the music but hate the funnel content then you should see sales go up. If they don't, then I think you need to continue testing new content and subject line/headline/email copy.

I'm wondering if it's maybe the audience. I know that's who people like to blame when they don't get the results they wanted but it's still a possibility.
The targeting is probably the last thing I would change at this point but maybe it's that. I don't know what who else to target. We have established that the music is blues. I've tried a lot of audiences. My best so far was Chicago Blues.
I have tried just running just the LTO and I didn't make a single sell. I've tried 1 and 3 blog posts and neither influenced sales much.
It's possible that it's the funnel content. I'm getting a good amount of comments on the blogs (all positive). Actually I do get a good amount a people following my blog. If they are doing that then they definitely want more. I've used tools like Hotjar to drill down more and I'm still not finding anything that's telling me it's the audience or the blog posts themselves. Maybe the audience is just polarized as you mentioned.
I'm also thinking maybe I've squeezed everything I can out of the funnel. For the month of January I was profitable. This was without running any promos, just the funnel. I have had profitable campaigns. If I took my best copy and used it I would be profitable or at least break even.
In my last campaign I got more sales from the LTO. About half which is more consistent with what I normally see.
Maybe I just leave it the way it is and build the list now. If I'm profitable then nothing else really matters.
Another point I want to mention is a lot of folks (nearly 90%) reported being broke as the reason they didn't purchase. I'm very skeptical about this because it's only $6.95 for a download. I mean you're in a bad spot if you can't afford that.
I'm jumping around a lot here but I'm just considering everything at this point.

If you're profitable, or even close to profitable, then I wouldn't do anything but try and scale. It's incredibly hard to be profitable with a $7 album, and you often are. That's a huge win. At the end of the day, you are just buying customers. From there, the real profiting begins with future promos. I didn't realize you were profiting, or even close. This is a win. Now scale up and run more promos. That would be my outlook because it will be infinitely easier to just sell something else and push into the black, than it will to labor over a few percentage points when you've already tried so much. Sounds like you're doing great to me.
In terms of survey results. I get the "I'm broke response" as well, and I just dismiss it. If someone can't afford $7 they will never buy anything from you. I tend to dismiss those comments and look for other, more valuable, comments. But based on what you're saying it sounds like maybe those that like it, buy it. And those that don't, stop engaging and don't bother answering the survey.

Just wanted to see if any of this seemed normal. I've got plenty to sell right now so I will just leave the funnel as is and make promos.
I haven't even started using lookalikes yet so I still have plenty of traffic available. I'll give scaling a try and see what happens.

Sounds good. You;re not wrong that the email open rate drop off is a bit steep, and it is odd that the LTO is not bringing in sales (I'd say about 80% of mine come from the LTO on average), but sometimes things just go the way they go. You can always revisit it. But yeah, I think focusing on additional sales and scaling would be the fastest path to greater profitability.
