I had heard about this before, but I completely forgot like a moron. I know that you can get paid for playing your own songs from a Performance Rights Organization but I'm not sure exactly how it's done. I was just wondering if you need the club manager to verify the performance, or you send it in yourself, or what?
Has anyone done this before? I'd be very interested in giving it a shot. I suppose if nobody has, I'll just call ASCAP, but I thought I'd get a straighter answer here!
Thanks!
Yeah. BMI started doing it last year sometime. They call it BMI Live i think. I initially thought it was just a way for them to track down venues who aren't paying their fees. But, its still a decent little bit of extra money. Definitely worth the effort. Just type in the songs you play on a given night and they pay you.

I hadn't heard that. Cool. I'm a BMI member. How about if I practice, and call it a house concert for my wife and kids? My family could easily argue that they are "paying" to hear my play! LOL!
That's awesome that BMI has it online. I'm gonna call one of the ASCAP offices about it and ask exactly how they do it and if you need to get the setlist signed or verified or anything.
Thanks for sharing Dean. I had never looked into this myself. Very interesting. How much are we talking about?

Not a ton....But I made an extra $150-$200 a quarter just by entering the songs I played at each gig. The first check was biggest because they were letting you report for shows from 6 months prior. Not sure what theyre doing now. But yall should definitely do this if you're BMI. Heres the link: http://www.bmi.com/live

I talked to an ASCAP member services rep today and you can do it for ASCAP by going to their Member Access area, then do a Member Access Inquiry- Category: My Performances and Topic: Live Pop Concert Performance Claim.
Then you enter where and when you played and your set list (and you can attach files if you need to.)
I'm planning on doing it for the last quarter of 2011, but there's about a thousand shows since we first registered with ASCAP that I could've been reporting this for. Anyway, better late than never!
Wow, thanks for researching that, Mike. I had no idea I could do this!
