Hey John-

I've got my content/ copywriting squared away and am starting to test the funnel. I sent test pages to myself form A Weber for every page. All download links work and all of that is in order.

However...when I've tried running myself through the funnel and signed up for the free download I hit snags:

1) When I tried to sign up for the free track on either my squeeze page (soft and hard) I got an error message. "E-mail Address Is Not Valid" (attaching here). I tried a few times- not a typo or anything like that.

2) I was able to sign up for the free track successfully via my homepage. As the admin for the account, I then got a notification from A Weber that I had a new subscriber on my Main List Test. I did NOT however, receive that confirmation e-mail from A Weber as the subscriber. Nothing. And therefore am not able to really start the funnel process.

3) Also, when I input my info in the Homepage download box- the writing is Black. When I do so on the Squeeze Page it's grey. I want black.

Any suggestions for how to resolve these issues and move forward?

Thanks!!

Hi Matt,

Changing the color of the text in the input fields is fairly easy. Just go to your web form page and edit the design, then change the color of the input fields and save.

As for the email delivery and error message, it's a bit hard for me to diagnose on my end. I would call Aweber and ask them what is happening. They have great phone support and can see exactly what is going on. My suspicion is that it's something very basic.

If you are still having trouble after that please let me know.

Hey Matt,

You would just retrace the steps you took to create it in the first place.

That said, all you need to do is go to aweber >> select list >> click sign up forms >> edit appropriate form.

All the best.

Hi John-

I was able to troubleshoot my issue w A Weber. Turns that Name field and E-mail field got swapped. They fixed it. Also turns out I never got my free download because I had the Legacy Follow Up Series on my Box Set Customers list instead of my Main List Test list.

I want to make sure I understand the List flow correctly.

My lists are:
A) Main Subscriber List
B) Customer List
C) Box Set Customers

As I understand it:

1) When someone signs up for the free track they get put on the Main Subscriber list. Then they get the free download e-mail and are on track for the whole Legacy Follow Up Series . If they never buy anything they always stay only on this list.

2) If/when they buy the album on offer (either at full price or discounted) they get put on the Matt Shapiro Customer List and get the download links for the album. I'm assuming as soon as they buy the album they're removed from the list that is getting the Legacy Follow Up Series? i.e. they stop getting pitched.

3) After purchasing the album they get ;ed to the upsell page. People who purchase the Box Set then get added to the Box Set Customer List. They would have 2 e-mails with download links- 1 for the album and 1 for the box set material

Am I missing anything?

p.s. Should subscribers get that confirmation e-mail before getting the download track? That didn't happen in my test- I got the track right away...

Thank you!
Matt

Ah, that makes sense. Glad you got it sorted.

You have the flow right. The only thing you need to make sure you do is add an automation rule that will automatically unsubscribe someone from the main list when they get added to the customer list. I don't normally add that rule for the upsell list unless I have a follow up series added to the main customer list (which is an option and might help with making additional upsells.

There is also a newer way of doing this with tags. That would involve creating one list and using tags to determine what email series people get delivered. There is an IC lesson on it should it interest you.

Thanks so much John. yeah, I made sure the automation rule is in place so I'm covered on that end.

One issue I've had today: When people sign up on the squeeze page (either of them) they get added to the Box Set List. And they get an e-mail with the box set downloads right away! How would I go about changing that? I must've got my wires crossed when i was setting it up the first time.

Cheers

It sounds like you created a web form for your uspell list and pasted it in your squeeze page. You need to create a web form in your general subscriber list.

Check and see if that's not the case.

Yup. Pasted the code from the Main List web forum and that did the trick. Thanks!

I've updated my squeeze page and wondered if you would take a quick look.

Thoughts?

Hey Matt,

Overall I think the page is looking pretty good.

The only things I would say is that, while I think you could run with it as is, my hunch is still that the headline lacks a little.

The way I look at headlines is to take them very literally and then ask myself if the elements in the headline line up with an actual conversation taking place in millions of people's heads right now.

So when I apply that filter to your headline it would mean that there needs to be millions of music lovers walking around thinking, "I really want to jump in my car, go driving around, and listen to low-fi music with viby male vocals." I could be wrong, but I'm not sure that's a thing.

I know it sounds silly when I put it that way, but that's what this process is when you strip it down.

I have no doubt that people want to have music to drive to. But I guess I don't feel that low-fi viby music aligns with the universal driving experience. Your music might, but phrased like that I don't think the connection is obvious.

So for me, I would go back to that USP. How would your biggest fan finish this sentence? Matt Shapiro is awesome. You should listen to him. His music is......

When you know how real people experience your music, and what they see as being unique compared to everything else out there, then you can just reverse engineer that conversation into a headline. That make sense?

That said, I think what you have reads perfectly fine. In a pinch you could run with it. I just think you could do better and this one might struggle to convert as well as you want it to.

Yeah. I hear that. Probably not millions clamoring for lo-fi vibey male vocals to drive to:-) Haha. Jesus. Back to the drawing board.

One thing people often say is that my songs sound like they should be in a movie. hence "cinematic"

Another friend of said the EP I'm selling sounds like:

"Indie electro rock with a hint of retro 50s boy/girl pop"

That said, my vocals are the central element in the brew. The songs are sort of built around them.

Thoughts on how any of this might weave into a headline??

p.s. these are the images I'm going to run for the first round of ads. What do you get from these? Maybe something in there that can put put into a headline...

There are sort of two parts to this...

There is what the music actually sounds like, and there is what you can convince people it sounds like. The latter is all that matters for starting the conversation. The former is all that matters when it comes to creating real fans and customers. But I point out the difference because what we are trying to do is convince people you have what they already want, while making sure that the promise is close enough to reality that they don't become disappointed after signing up.

It's also important to draw a distinction between being clever and being straight forward when describing who you are as an artist. Friends and critiques are often clever and flowery with words, which doesn't help us to communicate something quickly to the masses.

Indie electro rock means something. But I would next say, describe to me what is cool about indie electro rock so I don't have to gues at one you mean. That could mean Nine Inch Nails, or Fatboy Slim, or She Wants Revenge, depending on how one interprets it.

I struggle to imagine how retro 50s boy/girl pop merges with the electro rock description, but possibly because the electro rock description is not quite clear enough.

Cinematic could lead to something. But what does cinematic sound like? That could be a classical score, or it could be epic electronic anthems.

The images look cool. Though the first two have a very different feel than the third. The first two create a massive, arena feel. If I had to guess at what the music sounded like I would think it was electronic pop with a dreamy/epic/ethereal undertone.

The third picture, which personally draws me in more (but that could just be because of my interests) feels much rawer, more intellectual, and somewhat Est Coast.

In marketing they often say it is foolish to create a product and then find an audience for it. Instead they say you want to find an audience and create a product just for them. As artists that approach would be foolish since this is art and not just commerce. But thinking about things like that really helps. If you took your target audience and then allowed yourself to completely lie and make up anything you wanted, how would you craft an undeniably appealing pitch for music? Now take that and bend it until it's true.

Hope that helps.

This is great- thanks man. Will dig into to these suggestions and see if I can crack the code. Will send a revision later if/ when I feel like I've got something better.

Much appreciated.

Ok, I've taken another stab at this. I changed the headline and some of the copy in the paragraphs below it. I think this is better. Would love your thoughts.

http://www.mattshapiromusic.co.....freemusic/

Also, this led me to tweak my USP. Here are a couple variations. Anything feel like a direct hit?

  • New York City based artist trafficking in arena-ready indie pop with that sounds like a cross between Bruce Springsteen and Bon Iver.
  • Passionate New York City performer whose anthemic indie-pop sounds like halfway house between Bruce Springsteen and Bon Iver
  • New York City based indie artist who makes atmospheric 80’s influenced anthems showcasing his swooning and sensual vocal style

THANKS!

Matt

I feel like I may be coming off as difficult here... but I don't feel like the changes to the headline are that significant. Your headline is essentially just describing your music as loud indie pop. That leaves me unclear about what it is and not feeling very enticed to experience it. It's not that it's badly written (and that's half the battle), it's just that it doesn't really do much to entice the needs, wants, passions, and interests of your prospects, in my opinion.

I think your second USP all by itself would make a beter headline "The New York City based, Matt Sahapior, is a performer whose anthemic indie-pop sounds like halfway house between Bruce Springsteen and Bon Iver".

That said, I think you still need to get to the core of what indie pop's real appeal is. How would you say that?

For example, I would not just say Bruce Springsteen was Rootsy American Pop. I would say he was a subversive Americana songwriter who layers his rebellious ideals in anthem hooks and an energetic live show that is famous for spanning three or four hours per show.

Or something like that... Obviously, what you do would be different.

But for me, that gives me a real sense of what he does, and if I like subversive themes in catchy Americana music (Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil Young, etc), I might respond to that because it aligns with what I already am passionate about.

I still think what you have is a bit light in that department. That said, I could easily be wrong. What you have is well written enough that it could work as is. But if it didn't, I think that would be why.

Also just a note that I would center your headline. Looks like the style tags got removed.

I appreciate the honesty.  I'm gonna keep chipping away at this. I hear you and what you're saying makes perfect sense- I'm just stumped. If possible i want to avoid referencing other artists in my headline.

Question: In your Springsteen example, how would you put that into a headline?

Can you send examples of other headlines that have worked for MMM people? i.e. good ones

Thanks!

Matt
