Hello,
I was recently asked over instagram to write an original song for someone's son. But my first thought was "Who would own the copyrights? and how did I know this wasn't just someone with connections to get a song into a money-making avenue and saw my talent as a cheap way to make millions?" He was willing to pay $300. It costs $35 just to copyright the song. And it costs much much more to consult a lawyer to make sure I'm not getting screwed. I know no one on here can give me legal advice (unless you are a lawyer that is going to charge me less that $200 to chat and draft something), but what do you guys think? Is it worth it? I just don't want to be another one of those sad stories you hear of people getting their song stolen and the song makes a bunch of money for someone else. I wrote in my reply that I would need legal documentation saying I own the copyrights as well as a scan of his government ID so I know it's him and he's using his government name. Maybe all that might scare him off. But anyway, I'd still like your thoughts.
Thanks,
Jordan
Hey Jordan,
I'm a big believer that a bird in hand is better than two in the bush. But at the same time, you don't want to get ripped off. I wouldn't jump to any conclusions about his motives. Just ask him to make a proposal, or make one of your own and negotiate from there. At some point you probably would need a lawyer to look things over before you signed, if you were concerned.

Yeah that's the thing. The $300 he was offering would not cover even the lawyer fee so it doesn't seem worth it. I think I scared him off with all my Hollywood negotiation talk anyway. Oh well, didn't seem worth it.
I hear yeah. Yeah, a $300 flat fee for a song doesn't really seem worth it imo, unless you were sure you controlled the rights.

Be careful. There is an ongoing scam that sounds similar to this. https://aristake.com/songwriting-scam/
Hey Phil,
Yeah actually the convo in the beginning was very similar to this, even the thing about the puppy and Spiderman. I never thought the actually payment would be a scam, just that they would want the rights in the music. But either way I'm glad I didn't go through with it.
