I'm thinking of doing a Holiday Sale for my album in December for 2 days. I noticed CDBaby has "$5 Sale" you can choose, instead of doing your own sale. They make it seem like more people will randomly see your CD if it's in their $5 section, but has anyone done this with much luck? Or is it pretty much the same as doing it on your own?

Thanks,

Anna Zoe 🙂

I've never tried it on CD Baby, but I have done 1/2 price sales a few times at gigs, and my CD sales increase dramaticly. The last time I did it, my CD's sold out before the gig was half over!

I am doing a concert at a performance center next month, where people have to pay admission. I always feel like I should offer some kind of a deal after they buy a ticket, so this time I am going to offer CD's at a "pay what you want" price.  Anybody else have any luck with doing that?

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Greg--

Yes...Funny, i guess im gonna talk about bandcamp some more today.  So, Bandcamp -They are really good for 'pay what you want' sales. I was using it for a while on older releases.  You can set it at literally 'pay whatever' or you can give it a minimum. I've used both and they work for sure. And, if you're not posting the bandcamp page anywhere online (on your site, fbook, etc) you can use the address exclusively for folks you give the address to..i.e: special shows, folks on your list, etc. So it seems more special.

Great idea Dean! I currently don't use bandcamp, but I have been thinking about setting up a membership site. This might be an easy way to give it a try?

Thanks guys! Yea, I hope to see more sales while 50% off. Obviously CDBaby takes their cut, so I think I'd only get $3, but if I do it through my own site, I could make an extra $2... I guess it's about whether I'm doing it for money or exposure! -AZ

Funny thing about 50% off sales. I have noticed that many people will buy a CD, or even two at half price, even though they already have a copy they paid full price for previously. Some people really can't resist a bargain!

Very interesting ... thanks for the inside scoop! I think I'm gonna try the CDBaby $5 Sale this first time and see how it goes ... I'll keep you posted on the outcome!

Hey Anna,

As a general rule I jump on any kind of event like that. If nothing else, just to see what happens. But if I was going to be honest, I:d say not much would come from CD Baby. You pretty much always need to generate your own sales from your list.

But if I was going to run a half of sale and promote it to my list, I would create a short sales page or video where I applied all of these triggers we're always talking about and I'd just use paypal to take the orders. Shipping is easy to handle yourself when it's in short bursts like this. I would announce the sale to my list as a 3 day sale (Tuesday - Thursday), and I would send the first email out very early in the morning. I would send out a second email on day two, to just the people who didn't open the first email. I'd basically use the same email with a different headline. On day 3 I would send out an email letting everyone know it was the last day of the sale. I'd be shocked if you didn't see a HUGE spike in sales.

I often use things like Thanksgiving or Christmas as good tie in's for these kind of promos.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input, guys! I'm at the same point. I'm trying to figure out what to do for the holidays. I've already had a few people buy multiple cds for presents. In fact, I just shipped 5 to a lady in switzerland today.

Honestly, I'm just thinking of simply offering 20 percent off through the holidays. It seems like a good excuse to send an email to remind people to buy cds as presents. I also might do some wild sale for a couple days just for fun.

I'm doing a Thanksgiving deal this week.  Gave away a free album of new, unreleased, and live stuff. Then followed it up with a big sale.  Sale started yesterday and its going really really well.  Basically just trying to get the folks off the fence for the latest album.  But a lot of the sales are folks getting my previous albums.  I'll let you know how it all ends up.

Love hearing about you guys making sales. Let us know the totals when it's all finished... if you feel like sharing the numbers. Well done!

Okay…Results.

Ended up with 20 purchases for Thanksgiving.  Not an overwhelming number.  But pretty cool nonetheless.  I had been working the folks from an older (hostbaby) list to come over to my aweber list via a free 8 song album of rare/unreleased/live songs (And I made the album cover out of construction paper…pretty sweet):

http://www.deanfields.net/goodies.html

So, assuming the hostbaby people have been a part of my posse for a while, most of them have already bought most of my catalog.  And, the remaining folks on my list have already gone through the follow-ups and LTO.  Perhaps, since I've been doing this for almost a year now with yall, I've gotten better at followups and the LTO??.  So, many of those purchases may have come from people who are just more inspired to buy now.

Interestingly, almost all of the purchases were of my back catalog.  Which is pretty cool.  Im gonna assume that these are people who dig it enough to get more of my albums.

Thanks Charley-

One thing I forgot to mention...Right before I started the Thanksgiving campaign,  I thought of something that could have been a pickle....Since I was pushing the one time offer for Thanksgiving, I deleted the LTO emails from my followups.  Just in case yall are doing something for Christmas.   Might want to do that so people dont get conflicting sales copy.

Good stuff Dean.

I realize 20 sales isn't a HUGE number, but the reality is that most musicians aren't selling that in a year online. So well done for just a couple day period.

How big is your list at this point? What was the CTR? Just wondering what the conversion rate was.

Hey All ... just an update on my 72-hour Holiday Sale...

When I switched my mailing list from Reverbnation to Aweber I unfortunately went from about 1800 contacts to 145. Now I realize a lot of them probably weren't opening my emails, but there were a lot that WERE that didn't re-confirm when I did the switch, I'm assuming because it went into their Junk Folder and they never saw it. I consider it a necessary loss for potential gain.

That being said, I did exactly what John suggested for the 3-day 50% off sale, and I sold 9 albums out of 145 people, 2 of which had already bought the album when first released. I did post the sale on FB and Twitter each morning at 10am as well. Nothing amazing, but better than nothing!

Thanks for all the advice! See you again at Valentine's Day...

Hey Ann,

Always celebrate the small victories - selling 9 out of a list of 145 is pretty good and as John pointed out above - most artists are selling zip online for an entire year.

Do you still have access to the Reverbnation list? Perhaps you can send out a few more reminders to get them on your Aweber list? Otherwise, market your squeeze page and you'll build your list in little time. Even if it isn't as big right away, you'll at least have a quality list with all the features you need to convert more sales in the future.

Congratulations - I'm always so impressed to just see 'normal musicians' out there even having a sale! That's a huge step forward compared to most musicians out there! Keep it up.

Hey Anna, that is actually pretty darn good. That's a 6% conversion rate on a list of people who it sounds like had already been exposed to that product. Most marketers consider a 1-2% conversion rate to be average and they usually only count the people who click. So you're doing good, now you just need more subs.

That loss from 1800 to 145 is pretty hard to stomach, I'm sure. I had a similar thing years back where I went from something similar to about 60. It was a real reality check. As Mike said, if you have the contacts you might try removing all the people who switched and keep blasting the old list. Nothing really to lose. You could keep upping the incentive every time you sent a blast. But yeah, at some point you just gotta assume that if you can't get them to give you yoru email address they were never going to buy any way.

At least now you have real, and reliable information about your list.

Good job on the holiday sale.

Thanks guys! I was satisfied with those sales considering how many people were on my list... I do still have all the contacts from my old list, so good idea, I'll just send them a personal message asking them to re-confirm one more time.
