John,

Had a good time watching your music videos on your website! As a guitar player, I like your driving rhythm guitars in your sound.

Not sure where to post this, but, you mentioned that you had a one and half year old that might enjoy some kids music, you can hear complete tracks on my home page for my most recent CD at

http://www.johnnyonlymusic.com and you can see my latest music video right beneath it.

(Not sure if I'm supposed to ask your advice in this space, but, here it goes. -Let me know if I should put this below question in another section. I'd be willing. I am still pretty new here. Trying to figure out this forum)

-I am currently using Topspin for those widgets on my website at http://www.johnnyonlymusic.com - I'm wondering if they are too expensive and should I drop them. What do you think? ($499/year)

They do have functionality for membership sites with membership levels and they handle the bulk email as well as email gathering widgets. Those things are included in the $499/year. That also includes the shopping cart functions. Oh, I almost forgot, they also charge 15% of whatever you sell plus they pass the credit card fees onto you and they charge a tiny amount for bandwidth too.

I've never used their membership site functionality. Part of my work with you is not only to figure out the membership site idea, but to decide whether or not to drop topspin while I'm at it. I would love to hear your opinion.

Looking at your program, I see that there is only a one time fee for wish list. But, you haven't mentioned how much it might cost for a third party bulk email company. And I'm trying to figure out what other fees we are looking at with your system. For example, will I be paying for a third party shopping cart, or perhaps credit card fees? Like, am I wrong in thinking that your program is waaaaayyyy cheaper than using TopSpin?

Speaking of which, I just finished watching your July's lessons.  Very educational. Thank you for the effort you put into them.

Thanks Johnathan. I'll check out the tunes.

Hope you don't mind, I started a new thread for your post as it was a separate question from the thread it was posted in. Out of professional courtesy I make it a point to try and never say anything negative about a specific company, especially when I don't know all the details. With that said, Top Spin has been a mystery to me for some time. I can't really figure out what they offer that is different from tools that already exist. I tried writing them to ask exactly that and never got a response so I honestly don't know. They may be amazing, they may not.

I feel strongly that anything less than the BEST autoresponders are not worth it. Despite what they all say, deliverability rates vary a lot. And it takes a great deal of work to maintain your reputation with the different providers. The second tier companies typically don't have the ability to do that work. I believe Aweber starts at $20 a month. They are who I use and they are considered by most to be the standard. But you only need to take a look at your open rates to get an idea as to whether or not your service is doing a decent job. If you don't have access to those stats then I would definitely move on.

You might check out http://digitalaccesspass.com/. I believe they do everything else you mention (membership sites, shoppingcarts, affiliate management, stats, etc) and they start at $167 for a one time fee. I haven't used them yet, though I probably will down the line. The only thing there is that the service is designed for marketers, not musicians. Personally I think that makes it better. Functionality is far more important than branding.

Let me know if you still have any questions.

John,

Thanks for your thoughts.

I was just looking at DigitalAccessPass. It appears that it does the access things that Wishlist does. Would I still need Wishlist if I bought DigitalAccessPass?

Thanks again,

Jonathan

I don't believe so, no. I don't think yu would need much of anything else, aside form an autoresponder. From what I've seen it's a pretty awesome tool.
