I will soon be releasing a solo album (a few months away yet), and currently I have a few songs up on Bandcamp. And have sold some downloads, but only a handful. I have a basic Facebook page.
Soooo, should I take down anything on Bandcamp when I start a proper MMM style campaign? (I want to change out anything on there anyway as I have way better mixes now).
Lastly - in terms of timing and seasons, if I am not ready now... should I wait till spring to start my ad campaigns? (It used to be that everything was timed for the Christmas season... but I am very out of the loop on all that now)
Hey Robin,
Since Bandcamp offers music for sale, it's not much of a conflict to leave it there. The streaming services and iTunes are the biggest risk to sales. In those instances I usually recommend limiting the releases to the singles and reserving the albums for sales.
Seasons are much less important with this approach. Most of the traditional considerations have to do with competing against big names who all release around Christmas because it's a big time for purchases. But that has more to do with the fact that radio and retail are clogged. But because we are selling direct to fan it's not an issue.
Ads do tend to be more expensive around the holidays. But not so much so that it would stop me from releasing if I felt ready.
