I write/record kids music and I managed to nail a really great deal with a local (South African) parenting magazine called "your baby": they ordered a compilation CD of our music (in cardboard sleeve) and it's bundled with this month's issue of the mag.

It is by far the biggest order we've ever had: 29 000 units
We made a nice profit on the deal, but most importantly on the back cover of the CD were the words "for a bonus track sign up for our newsletter" and a link to our squeeze page http://www.africanabc.com

Only problem is that in South Africa broadband is very expensive & only a small percentage of the population have access to fast, reliable Internet. Many people do have smartphones, but with data being expensive they use the phones for email and browsing, not downloading.

So instead of getting the hundreds (or thousands) of new subscribers that we hoped for, we've only had about 70 sign up so far (the magazine is on the shelves for another week or two still).

Just thought I'd share the idea, as I think it is something that would be more viable in the U.S. or Europe.

Oh....and if anyone has any connections or contacts with a parenting magazine....please share them with us as we'd love to do the same thing with a U.S magazine.

Hey Graeme, congrats on the deal. 29,000 units is fantastic.

I wouldn't be too discouraged with the sign ups. Offline advertising is difficult. It's weird tp put it in this perspective, but I just checked the stats of that test campaign I did for the new Facebook Ads training module and I got about 18,000 impressions and about 25 subscribers (if memory serves). That is kind of on par with what you got (worse actually) if you look at each magazine as an impression. Which in truth is exactly what it is. Just points out the effectiveness of online advertising.

But still, if you're not paying for it, including ads exactly like you did is an awesome way to go.

I've always thought it would be smart to form strategic partnerships with other musicians who you tour with and cross promote with so that everyone's efforts were multiplied. Trade unions of sorts.

If you did that you could each put flyers in each others CD's. They promote you, your promote them. Promoting a squeeze page of course 🙂
