Hey John:

Just finished listening to the May coaching call; interesting stuff on the changes at Google.

If I was understanding the ramifications you were outlining correctly, it sounds as if the effectiveness of large authority sites in sending traffic to your page is on the wane? Of course, this made me think of EZine Articles, and I'm wondering whether I was understanding you guys correctly, and if so, what adjustments you might make to the article marketing part of your strategy going forward.

Thanks! ~ Mike

Hey Mike,

That is the concern, however I'm not certain the effects are going to be as significant for people in less competitive markets such as music. Still doing a lot of research and talking to friends in the industry to get a better feel for the effects this is going to have. It's possible that it will effect EZA but I just don't know yet. I'll need to publish some articles and see.

It does have me eventuating the idea of a large authority site vs a network of smaller sites. But as of now, my authority sites have not been too dramatically affected. Neither of my main 3 have been hit, but one saw the introduction of new competing sites into the rankings which took a piece of my pie. That was not in music though. I'll have abetter feel in a few weeks. As of now I'm still cautiously moving forward with the same plan I have outlined in the past, Though I am going to really be focusing on a link plan that seems as natural as possible.

Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a little one-on-one assistance so you can ask questions that pertain to your specific goals and get a second, more experienced, perspective? thanks, John - good to get an update, and I'll be interested to hear what you might have to say on the subject when you get more data.

Also wondering if you could briefly expand on what you mean by "focusing on a link plan that seems as natural as possible"? Pretty sure I get the basic idea behind that - you want to Google to see links to your site/squeeze page that occur in content that might have been written by a real person who has an interest in what your page is about, right? - but I often find that I (and probably everyone else in the IC) learn a lot from your short explanations of these types of things. Thanks!

Hey guys!

I just finished listening to the coaching call as well- you guys had me laughing!  And I can't believe you were busting my balls!  ha!

How often should I be sending content/emails to my list?  Before MMM, I was very sporadic and only about shows and cds....now I am learning how to engage more regularly, but haven't quite got a feel yet for how often that should be....once a week?  once a month?

I was actually waiting a bit to send another email to my list b/c I had gone so hard on the launch, but it sounds like you think I waited too long!

Thanks John!

PS. I was planning to release my 2nd EP, Jun 26 and the 3rd one, Sept 11 or Nov 5.  Do you think those dates are too close to one another?

Wow! That's harsh, man -- HARSH! Laugh

I so love you guys. Really, I do. This place is more than just knowledge. It's motivation. Sometimes I do some bone-headed things in the learning process, but I am **NOT** going to be denied!

Hey John: just received an interesting email from EZine that I thought I might share with you and everyone else here.

I submitted an article about a big-time artist whose music sounds a little like mine (well, really it's more the other way around, right?) last week. 5 or 6 days later, I got an email saying approval had been held up, and that one of their reviewers wanted to email me directly, which of course I said would be okay.

Finally heard from the reviewer today; she said everything was fine, except that both of the links in my resource box linked to the same squeeze page. She recommended that I switch one of them to link directly to my main content site, and that I include a link to that content site directly on my squeeze page.

"This will ensure that your readers have a large amount of content to view on each link they click on.", she said, which seems thoughtful. However, it totally defeats the purpose of the squeeze page, of course. I made both of the changes and emailed her back to say so. Hopefully now it will be approved quickly....so that I can go back and remove the new link from my squeeze page!

Have you heard of this happening to anyone else lately, or do you think it might just be that this one reviewer is stricter than most others? If this is a new policy for EZA, it seems like it's going to be kind of a bummer for us to essentially be required to put two conflicting calls-to-action into our resource boxes...

Just typing off the cuff here.  As a work-around, what if you just made the 2nd link a redirect to your squeezepage?  Wonder if that would work....

Hey Kat,

Nice to see you in here as well. Music is a terrifyingly small world. My take on email frequency is that once a month is a completely safe bet for talking to your entire list (at least the people who've been around awhile, brand new people can get more of your autoresponders designed to let them get to know you.) My band does a monthly newsletter, but we also do special show announcements geotargeted at the ZIP codes we'll be playing in. And once or twice a year we might send something to the whole list outside of the newsletters if it's some really big news.

At Broadjam, we send out newsletters weekly and specific genre opportunity emails for licensing several times a day, but everyone who gets those had to opt in to that. Most people don't seem to mind a lot of email communication as long as it's regular, you kind of have to feel out your list and see what works for them. Don't be scared to ask them.

As far as your EP release dates, the real question is – are you going to be able to milk the EP for all that it's worth before you release your next one? Make sure that you're getting as much mileage out of the songs that you've already released before moving on to the next thing. There's a tendency right now to release as much as possible as fast as possible (and I'm guilty of that as anyone) but make sure that the excitement in your audience of your last recording is wearing off and then start building up some anticipation towards the new recording.

How are you capturing your audience's attention? How are you holding it? Three months might be plenty of time to get the most you can out of your second EP and build up some excitement towards the new one. But also, it might not be enough. It depends on how often you're communicating with your audience and playing live. If you're playing a lot you might want to release more quickly so that your audience has something new to be excited about at the show. If you're not, you probably can afford take more time and build things more slowly because online your music is always "new" to someone.

Do whatever you can to maximize that EP and get that music in front of as many people as possible. If you see that the songs are connecting with people, then don't rush into releasing a new one, work on getting those songs into more ears. If the tunes aren't hitting with your regular audience, then you kind of see it might be time to get something new out there before too long.

That's my two cents anyway, good luck!

Mike

Hey Mike,

You'll find this type of thing with google pay per click too.  A good work-around is that you can make a squeeze page just for this type of traffic and waaaaaaaaaaaaay down at the bottom, really small, you can have link "Home" that goes to your main blog.

The trade-off here is that you risk people leaking through your squeeze page if they see it, but at least you'll be compliant for the traffic source.

I had to do this with a squeeze page, just to be able to run ppc ads to it.

I basically just mean anything that doesn't leave an obvious footprint and looks just like normal conversations do on the internet. In other words, unique and valuable content that appears on decent sites in related niches or on quality free or social sites/networks.

For example, for the time being I'm staying away from fiverr links, mass submissions of any kind, spun content, etc. That may change, but for a little while its best to keep it safe. Press releases, guest blog posts, new sites like content facilitator, social media links, etc are all very natural and par the course of any above board site. At least that is what I'm currently doing with my authority sites. That doesn't mean that grey hat stuff isn't working for mini sites. It very much is. You just don't want to take chances at the moment with your authority sites. At least until the dust settles.

There isn't really any rule regarding how often, it's more about keeping a balance between promotion and value in my opinion. It also depends on how your list is responding. If they aren't responding well then pulling back is good. If they are responding than frequent is good. I would email at least once every two weeks.

Those dates are fine as long as you have time to get some new traffic and get your list engaged again and ready for a new album. It really varies from person to person.

This is interesting. I have not heard of this at all. May be a fluke, may be a shift. If it continues I would drop the two links and go with one to your squeeze page. No point in sending traffic to your content site. Wouldn't be worth it in my opinion.

That's a good suggestion. I have made adwords friendly squeeze pages that aren't quite as good as a regular squeeze page but still work well. i didn't do them exactly like Steve but the principle is the same. Instead I'd basically add links to a few articles in the right side bar below the opt in form and maybe even a nav bar. But I would have calls to action in all the articles bringing people back to the opt in offer.

Thanks Mike & John!

My read/click thru rates are looking like this:

5/10/12: 30.2%/ 9.4% (content- blog post)

5/3/12: 43.2%/11.2% (content- blog post)

4/24/12 38.8%/3.5% (promo for online show)

Launch emails 3/22/12 - 4/2/12 range: 65% - 31/4% / 2.5%-18%

Does that look like I should engage 2 times a month?  I'm trying to engage by posting blog content and encouraging comments....am I on the right track?

Also, Ali Handal and I are going to start getting together regularly to work on Insider Circle Stuff/MMM traffic driving strategies - we are excited! We are planning to start with the Sean Mize Podcast strategies. Yay, Kat

The open rates are pretty good. 10% is not a terrible click through but it could be better. Mine seem to range between 5 - 25% (CTR). Really depends on the topic, the email, and email frequency. Link placement has a lot to do with it as well. I don't know that I can look at those numbers and say anything definitive.

Hey John:

Just wanted to follow up now that a couple more weeks have gone by. I've been reading various sources regarding the impact of the whole Penguin thing (as well as Google's previous adjustments), including Chris Rempel's take and your own post to the MMM blog.

Granted, most of the info that's out there seems to pertain more  to the IM world than to music, but I've come across mentions of EZA dropping significantly in rankings for some keyphrases, and I'm wondering whether it might make sense for people like us to branch out a bit into some of the other traffic generation possibilities that are out there.

Specifically, if it takes me 20 minutes to write an article on, say, "Johnny Cash Walk the Line", would spending an hour creating a Squidoo lens/Tumblr post/Wordpress.com blog on the same subject be a good idea right now? I get that all things being equal, diversification makes sense; I'm just trying to investigate things we could do that are more or less a one-to-one replacement for writing an EZA article, time-wise.

Hope that makes sense - let me know if I can add anything to make what I'm trying to ask any clearer. Thanks!

Yeah, it's still being debated in terms of EZA post penguin, but I'm definitely leaning more towards general content marketing like Sean Mize talks about in the recent podcast I did with him. I think creating quality content on web 2.0 properties is a fine way to go. Guest blog posting is probably even better, though harder.

I'm in the process of creating a site just for MMM and IC members for exactly the reasons you are touching on. It's basically going to be a giant music site. In theory it will function like EZA did in the sense that you benefit from their authority, but because this will be ultra targeted for music everyone should do better. And because the primary reason the site will exist is to help you guys, you won't be fighting the competing agenda that the article sites have.

There will be quality requirements though.

The site is already live and you are free to start contributing if you like, but the site is very new so there is no built in authority and/or traffic yet. The design isn't even finished, nor is the layout. You can check it out here: http://www.hardcoretroubadour.com/

Once it's puling in more traffic and the rankings are there, I'll unveil it. But the idea is to basically let you guys create content and I handle SEO. It'll take some time, but I think this is going to be pretty huge once I get it to mean something in teh serps. I'm being very cautious with this one because of the whole penguin thing. Eventually I will expand things so that I have a whole collection of sites like this for added diversity. But first things first. If you want to start publishing just shoot me an email at john@www.mmmanifesto.com - just mention that we talked in teh forum so Steve knows that it needs to be left for me. You can also PM me here in the forum.
