Long story short, Google now allows you to disavow a link to your site to protect against bad SEO advice or even someone intentionally building bad links to your site in attempt to negatively impact your site.
But of course, the still reserve the right to make their own call about whether or not you deserve a penalty. Google's history is not a forgiving one. So we'll see if this ends up really mattering.
