Hi guys
I was just listening to the Insider Circle weekly call, and John Oszajca recommended I post this question here.
So I am a pianist for live events (parties, weddings, corporate events), based in London, UK and I have been live-streaming for the last 4 Fridays, supporting a British charity at the moment.
To date, I’ve been streaming into a web based platform called Streamyard, which is great. I simul-cast into both Facebook live and Youtube. What is great from an audio point of view is they have a “disable audio processing” feature, which helps to pipe the audio down the internet in a reasonably clean way.
HOWEVER, a friend of mine is using OBS (covered in your Twitch podcast) and OBS has more settings in it that can achieve an even higher quality audio quality than what I’m getting via Streamyard. I can confirm I managed to do a test today on OBS and the quality was fantastic and pristine, way better than Streamyard.
I wondered, does anyone else use OBS, and also concur that OBS can deliver the best quality audio (and probably video) down the internet? I wondered what is it in particular about OBS that enables this? i.e. what’s so special about OBS for us musicians. And, further is there any other encoding tool that comes close?
Thanks a lot, Bryan
Hey Bryan,
I know you're looking for feedback on the tech side, which I can't personally offer, beyond what was said on the call today. But if you tested both with the same set up and got better quality on OBS then it sounds like you've got the answer you are after.
I spent a little time looking over Streamyard, and as someone who is not a tech head, I liked it's simplicity more than OBS. And the reviews I read seemed to echo that sentiment. But if the quality is low then it obviously won't work.
I'd start by emailing Streamyard and showing them the side by side, or at least explaining the difference in quality, and see what they say. There may very well be a setting that you can use to improve the quality. If you learn anything, let us know.

Hey Bryan, I think I can explain it. I've only used OBS personally, but I looked at Streamyard out of curiosity and I think I know why it would have lower quality.
Streamyard runs out of your browser, while OBS processes the stream through your computer's hardware. So OBS is capable of considerably more power, while Streamyard is bottlenecked by your browser.
Does that make sense?
Would be nice to see a bunch of you testing different things and coming to a conclusion of the best way to get optimal audio, as there has been a lot of interest and discussion around this lately. No conclusions just yet though...

Hello guys,
I hope you and your families are well during these weird times. During this lockdown period, I’ve done some several live broadcasts on Youtube using OBS. After doing a bunch of testing, it works pretty well using an Ethernet cable and a zoom mic hooked up to my computer. I’m able to get a good sound and an ok picture.
I now would also like to use Zoom (especially for one on one video interaction, like guitar classes, etc…). However I can’t really make it sound good on Zoom. It’s not as good as on Youtube.
I was wondering if it was just me or if the platform is not an optimal tool to do that. Have any of you used Zoom to do online shows or to give guitar classes, etc. ? Any technical suggestions how to make it work a lot for your help and your input ?
Eric
Hi Eric,
Sorry you haven't had any input on this one. Just out of curiosity, why do you feel that using Zoom is important to you, as apposed to embedding a video within your own site, like I demonstrate in this lesson: https://www.mmmanifesto.com/in.....-concerts/
Is it the two way video that you are looking for?

Sorry for my late reply John. Thanks for sharing the link. I do already use OBS and Youtube to do online shows mainly on Patreon.
To answer your question, yes indeed I am looking for a two way video. I want to use Zoom for private guitar lessons (where I can see my pupil) but also for my educational programs that help people learn French using French songs. I need to be able to see the people that are watching my "online class".
Ah, I see. You probably mentioned that and I just spaced it. Zoom is probably best then. Let us know if you learn anything new.
