 Hey fellow insider circler's

long story short i am having a shitful time with ad targeting and seem to be banging my head against the wall with trying to get my ad cost to a decent price. Currently paying over $5 per sub. I have been trying everything, images, copy targeting (slightly) but the only think i am now left with is that my targeting must be way off the mark. I have spent hours finding artists that i sound similar too for targeting but i am starting to think i am wrong. I would really appreciate you guys having a listen to my free sign up tracks and telling me what artists you think i am similar too. I will not mention who i have currently been targeting so i do not influence your opinions.

Above are the links to my 3 free sign up tracks. please do not judge, 2 of them are very popy and are not work i am proudest of. However the song called Burning The Bridge (top one) i feel is my sound, and very much the sound and feel of my next EP which i hope to release soon.

Fire away with you think i should be targeting. any suggestions are appreciated.

Cheers

Jordan

Hey Jordan,

Those tracks (especially the first two) really remind me of David Grey, with maybe a little Tracey Chapman somewhere in there. The music sounds really good.

One thing to remember - which is perhaps a bit counter-intuitive - is that your music is not all that relevant to your subscriber conversions. Because no one is actually hearing your music before signing up (unless you are hosting a player or video) it is less about how similar your music is to your target audience and it's more about how good you are at convincing fans of one particular artist that you have music they will like. Targeting will however effect sales conversions because by the time you ask for the sale people should be quite familiar with your music.

An exercise that might help would be to write an ad and squeeze page copy for an artist that doesn't exist. Imagine that your life depends on convincing David Grey fans (or whoever) that you have an artist they they will love, they just need to enter an email address to get the music. In this exercise you can say anything you need to. You can make up lies. You can attribute any kind of success or qualities that you want to to this artist. By removing yourself it might be easier to see how you would convince someone that they will find an artist appealing. Then just take a look at what you did and see how you might insert your own true story into the template that you have created. It's a starting place anyway.

Hey John Thanks for getting back to me. Ill give that a try!  As Steve might have told you i am having all sorts of greif with getting ads to convert at a cost that is affordable still. They are still coming in at about $5 per sub. but as i have mentioned in the emails to Steve i have been targeting audiences of James Bay, Hozier & Ben Howard which all have an image that is very different than mine. For example my branding doest tell people i make similar music to the audiences i am targeting do you think this could also have a negative impact on my ads performance's because my images aren't giving the right vibe in compared to the artsis whos audience i am targeting? Like you said they are seeing me first not the music?

I hope my rambling just made sense..

Hey Jordan,

Yes, I think that could be a big issue. If I made music that sounded like the Sex Pistols, but my look and vibe was more like Justin Bieber, I wouldn't do very well advertising to Sex Pistols. But conversely, if I advertised to Justin Bieber fans they might sign up more readily but I probably would sell a lot less to my list.

Have you tried targeting David Grey fans by chance? Your music really reminded me of his and I think your "vibe" would translate to that audience as well. Of course I could be totally wrong and often am when it comes to targeting.

Hey John,

Thanks for this, Yes that all makes a lot of sense. I am very much hoping that my branding is the issue as i have tried absolutely everything else i can think of and have still really struggled with the Facebook ad cost (over $5 per sub). So yeah ill do some work on my branding and try again!

No i haven't tried David Grey, Its a good idea, ill give it a crack!

Thanks

I've heard this style of music before but I'm not familiar with the names of the artists who make it.

I thought the music sounded really good even though I'm more of a heavy rock type of guy.

The first name that came to mind when I heard your music was "Ed Sheeran"...., but like I said, I don't know much about the artists who play that style. I've only heard Ed Sheeran in passing, so I'm probably way off the mark. Another suggestion that's probably even further "off the mark" is Dave Matthews although I would bet that fans of both those artists would be able to really appreciate your sound and style.

Hey Jordan,

My pleasure. I hope you get the results you're looking for. I'm absolutely sure that there's at least a decent size audience for your music. Your tunes are really good and the production is spot on.
