OK...right now we have 134 members in the Insiders Circle, but only a few of us are posting much. Please!!! Don't be shy!!!

How about if everyone who hasn't posted anything yet introduce your self? Tell us who you are, what you do, what instrument you play, or how you are connected with the entertainment/music industry. If you are just curious, and feel you don't really have a connection, that's OK too! It might be very informative for those of us in the biz to hear opinions from a different perspective.

If you feel that you are "just sorta" involved, tell us that too! I taught guitar for a while, and I'll bet that I learned as much from my students as they learned from me, maybe more.

This Insiders Circle is about a month old, and already I have gained a lot of knowlege and ideas. I feel like I'm also gaining some new friends. I've asked what I thought were some pretty dumb questions, and the answers I got back were very respectful and helpful. I haven't seen any over-inflated egos here either, just poeple willing to help. Lets make this work!

I now pass the microphone on to.......you!

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Check out Greg Parke and you’ll have a pretty good idea!

Seriously... there really are not any dumb questions here.  Take it from someone who struggled to understand good marketing for years.

I would have killed to have a mastermind group like this one to reference.  It would have cut my learning curve from years to months.

Not to mention... things slip out in here that you'd have to pay big bucks to learn elsewhere (intentionally and otherwise Wink).

Welcome Darryn!

I think there needs to be an official musical genre that is called "cross musical genre" for those of us, (like me!) that have a hard time classifying our music because it does cross so many genres. I'm having a hard time deciding if I can really get by with putting my new material on one CD, or splitting it up into two, just because of that reason!

Hey, whats up guys? My name is Mike Maldonado and I’m the tenor saxophonist/manager of a band called Urkel & The Winslows. We’re a Ska/Reggae/Rock band from Brooklyn, NY and we’ve been together about two years now.

I go to school for Music Business, but to be honest, a lot of colleges are missing the mark when it comes to internet marketing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m learning as much as I can about marketing in general and I love it, but for some reason many schools don’t understand the basic fundamentals or psychological triggers of online marketing compared to “old-school” conventional marketing.

That’s where MMM 2.0 and the Inner Circle came into the picture. When you think about it, there aren’t really many big ska bands left out there. A lot of people believe it’s a “dead” genre, which (I feel anyway) gives us the perfect edge and opportunity to attempt to “revive” the ska scene.

Not gonna lie though, it’s tough as hell. There’s so much to do these days and it gets pretty overwhelming at times, but it’s good to know there are like-minded people out there. It’s cool to see other people’s perspectives and opinions on what works and what doesn’t, and I look forward to reading more posts from you guys and putting it to some use.

And if anyone’s got a second, check out our website at urkelandthewinslows.com or visit our squeeze page at urkelandthewinslowsgiveaways.com and let me know how I’m doing. I would definitely appreciate ANYTHING anyone has to say!

Thanks,

Mike

It's great. Staying in Bath at the moment. Stunning. It's like Aspen meets the middle ages. Off to Stonehenge today.

I hear ya about colleges missing the mark.

Re: Ska is dead... It's funny, as a musician you hear that such and such a genre is dead all the time. When in reality, all it means is that a genre does not have enough current interest to compete and radio or in other mainstream channels. But in reality there are millions of people interested in every genre out there.

Some quick keyword research shows that currently, 11,100,000 people are searching for terms related to ska every MONTH. That's hardly "dead".

The internet has changed the game so much for musicians. In the old days when all there were was the mainstream channels your chances might have been slim, but the internet, and internet marketing gives us all access to the global market place. I find it all really exciting and empowering.

I realize it can seem like a lot at first, and there is a big learning curve, but if you stick with it long enough there will be a moment where you suddenly have enough perspective to know what is going to work and what won't. It actually becomes pretty simple at that point. Traffic >> Offer >> Product >> More products.

You're right, but there is something to be said about things repeating themselves.

There was that period throughout the early 90's where punk rock, with the exception of a few touring acts, was dead.  Then Green Day blew up.  Bands like the Offspring, Rancid and a slew of others were suddenly gaining new ground and punk was suddenly alive again.  Bands like the Queers were getting write ups in Rolling Stone magazine.  The underground got credibility.

That gave way for alot of ska/punk bands.  Reel Big Fish and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones found new life as well.  Gold Finger and No Doubt sold a shit ton of records.  There is definitely an ebb and flow.

But John's right, it's not like people "outgrow" their love for particular types of music.  It's more that their taste gets a bit refined.  For instance, when you were young you may have loved Metal as a genre, but then you listen to a ton of it anf realized some of it's great and some of it just isn't so great.  But the love for the genre still remains.

Someday the genre you love will make it's way back into the mainstream, but who cares?  You have the tools to get your sound in front of people right now!

Mike

All I learned in music school was how to play my horn. Kinda sucked when I couldn't get consistent work. I quit for a while, got married, started raising kids, and now just released my debut album. Cool I get little break-throughs here and there, and John has really given me some hope to be able to do what I want to do.

Yeah, no kidding Charley...

College was a joke for me as well.  I sure wish this information was as abundantly available when I started my band.  Of course, those were the dial-up days, but my life would have been considerably different had I been armed with this stuff back then.

Welcome Natalie. Where in Hawaii are you from? I'm from Waimanalo, Oahu. Nice to see someone else from Hawaii in here. I think you're the first.

Hi everyone,

I'm Cliff Stevens this is my first post glad to be here. I am a working musician, have one album and also do a tribute to Eric Clapton from time to time. Signed up about a month ago and have been working on the new website, squeeze and email campaign and am about to get into Twittering. Glad to be here and I hope to contribute and learn lots from you guys ( and ladies!). I have two ads in magazines, Blues Matters (current) and Blues Revue (Sept-Oct issue) so I hope to generate some opt-ins from that. That's it for now.

All the best.

Cliff

P.S.

Almost forgot my sites: CliffStevens.com & EricClaptonTribute.com
