Hello everyone,

I'm wondering what you all thig about JANGO radio? I am currently working on a webpage and until it is ready, I got no exposure and no place to send trafic to. I got a few fans with that radio, but not so many for the cost. If I stop paying, I'll lose those fans. What do you suggest? I do have about 6 or 7 email address from that site... Really not much!

Also, should I have a web page from CD Baby as well as mine? I know that it is said in the manifesto that it is a good idea, but how can I do this? Meaning that where will I send trafic to? My own page or the CD Baby page if I choose to have one? I'm at the beginning of this process and I'm a bit mixed up here...

Can anyone help? I'm also waiting for the confirmation of my contract from SOCAN.

Thanks so much!

Isabelle,

The idea is that you initially want to send new traffic to your webpage, get them into your follow-up cycle where you can build a relationship.  From there you can send an email with an offer to visit your cdbaby page to make a purchase.

Doing things this way gives you control over the interaction.  If you just drove traffic to cdbaby, you don't get the opportunity to build a list and if they don't buy your cd that first time, you may never see them again.

Always go for the opportunity to have them sign-up on your own webpage first, in order to establish that control over the exchange and build up your album.

Hi Isabelle

  I agree with Steve!

Also, CD baby makes it real easy to have a page on your website connect to your CD baby page (without leaving your site) so you can sell CD's from your website. If I remember right, you can even customize the look of your CD baby page to go along with the color scheme of your website. This isn't a plug, but if you want to see an example visit my website at http://www.gregparke.com  If you click on the "CD's" tab, you will see what I am refering to. CD baby is great about helping you set this up if you have any problems. Just give them a call

What would a jam session with Gordon Lightfoot, Collective Soul, and Damien Rice sound like?

Check out Greg Parke and you’ll have a pretty good idea!

Thanks guys, I guess I'll have two sites soon. What about the Jango airplay? Do you think I should get out of there?

Since you don't tour, you would have to calculate your "cost-per-fan" to see if
Jango is worth it for you or not.

If you are able to get people from Jango to sign up to your main mailing list,
you would then have to track what it costs you to get them vs. what they are
buying.

If you haven't already, you can customize your promo module with a message
and a URL.  I just changed mine to say: "Click THIS, Join our mailing list, and Get a Free Track!"
and made the URL to point to my squeeze page.

If you see sign-ups coming from this, then divide the number coming in per how
much you are spending to get them.  If this number is high, then it might not be
a good option.

But I would leave your songs and your squeeze page link on Jango anyway for
people to find because that doesn't cost anything.

Thanks Tim!

That helps and well, I'm actually happy that I'm not alone on Jango.

I found it useful for the demographic information. You find out who people think you sound like, and what their musical tastes are. You also find out what age-groups and sex you appeal to. Other than that, it didn't get me very far.

Thanks Charley, I think I'll stop paying for this service and work on my squeeze page and other ways to gain trafic. I did see all of what you're talking about. It is interesting that I do have fans from India, Australia and actually all over the world! That is pretty cool. Knowing that, I'll tweek my web advertising.

By the way, I like your songs! 😉

Hey Isabelle,

Tim kinda covered it in terms of figuring out if Jango is worth it or not. Track your subscribers and see how profitable it is. As long as you're breaking even it's worth it. If not, then it's obviously not. Only thing to keep in mind is that it takes a few months to calculate the real value of a subscribers as you don't know when they might buy. I see people on y list for 6 months or so sometimes that one day come along and purchase. But of course the majority purchase within the first week or two.

As far as where to sell your music, CD Baby is a fine option if you want to not have to deal with payment processors and shipping. However, there are some advantages of adding an order page on your own site with your own processor. When you do that you can control the entire process, offer upsells, and segment your customers from your list. You can do this for free with Paypal but then you have to handle the shipping.

Either option is absolutely fine though.

Hi Isabelle,

You said above that you were afraid you would lose your fans if you stop paying at Jango.

But I don't think that is the case.

I signed up with Jango 2 months ago for a free 100plays account, I've got about 5 fans during the period that my 100 "play credits" ran, and then my account remained there. And since then I acummulated 50+ fans more. (I really don't understand how their system works).

And a week ago, I sent an invitation to another band to join Jango and I got another 250 plays for free.

As regarding the impact and the possibility to start a communication with your Jango fans, that is something I haven't tried yet. But I thought that this information could be of some help to answer your questions.

Cheers,

Iuli

Hello Iuli,

I do sne dmessages to my fans from Jango, but I get the feeling that they don't read any of them... What I did as a test, I used my email address from my job and I became a fan of a couple of bands to see the other side of this jango thing. Bands do send emails, but if you don't go through your emails but we don't get notifications about them. I had to click on my account and look for mails... I found 3 mails from bands and I didn't know they were there for a while... So I think that the people are not aware of these emails thing... No response so far from anyone of them. So I'm going to stop paying for this service. There are certainly more effective ways to get through to fans... I'm shooting a video tonight, so I'll use utube for a while and see how it goes there. I'll read what Charley has to say about utube...

Thanks to all of you guys! This is the BEST school of life ever! Keep it up!Laugh
