Hey Everybody:

I just wanted to kind of toss an idea out for people to bat around, and potentially get some insight from others who are trying something similar.

I've got about 20 completed songs which I feel pretty good about, and in the past I'd have said that it was about time to choose 10 or 12 of these, hole up for six months in the studio, and put another album together.

These days, though, it really does seem like generating a steady stream of content is a better way to stay in fans' minds, to try and remain a constant presence amid the sea of noise. So, in the interests of having material to continually put out - as well as to get an objective idea as to which of these songs might be better than the others (having long since lost any perspective on them myself, of course 😉 - I've been considering releasing rough demos of the songs, one a week, and soliciting feedback from people on my list.

I know that some will argue that it's a waste of time to put anything other than your very best out there, but others say that showing your imperfections and rough edges gives your real fans even more reason to bond more tightly.

So (finally) my question: are any of you using a release strategy like this to maintain contact with your fanbase, and/or to market test new material? How's it working for you? I'd love  to hear anything anyone has to say on the subject. Thanks!

Hey Mike,

I've not personally taken that approach, but I see no problem with it. The one thing I hate to see more than anything else is people waiting until everything is "perfect". It never is. I heard someone once say something to the effect of, art is not so much the act of creation, but rather knowing when you are finished creating. I believe that. I have seen too many artists work on albums for half a decade or more. I think the most important thing is to just bring your products to market. That doesn't mean that you should release sub par content, but rather that there is value in all types of art/music. Be it a demo or a finished album. Who wouldn't pay money for Bob Dylan's old demos, if he had any? So bottom line, I think you can make that fun for the fans and it would be a vary valid approach as long as you positioned it right. Waiting until you have a finished album is great, but if this gets you going faster, I personally like the idea.

Heck, you might try selling it as a back stage pass or something. For $30 people would get 12 exclusive demos, opportunities to give feedback in live chat session/listening rooms, maybe a name in the thank you's and a digital copy of the album when it was finished... or whatever. there are a million ways to present it.

Thanks, John. Totally agree with you on not waiting until something's "perfect" - since it never will be. Just ask Axl Rose 🙂

Uhhh...yeah... LOL! I'm not gonna do that with my next one! I've learned. I hope. Honestly, I'm not sure that people like my album any more than they like my practice sessions. I always flip the record button on when I practice, and every so often I take some time to mix a tune from a practice session and throw it out there to my fans. They love them.
