We are less than 2 months from Xmas-traditionally a time when more is spent on music than at any other time in the year. Is now really a good time to release new trax? The majors go into over drive in the lead up to Xmas and the New Year-established artists will put out a lot of stuff now. Your thoughts please: Is this a good (or bad) time to put out music given all of the activity that is starting? Is IM independent of all of this? Does it simply come down to the relationship you have with your fans?
Ekow,
This is just my opinion, but taking advantage of holidays and events as an excuse to generate sales is just smart business. Go for it!

Hey Ekow,
For the majors it's a good and bad time of year. More consumers are spending money but because of that every big artist is releasing around the holidays which means that it's ultra-competitive.
In my opinion that doesn't really affect the indie artist as what we are doing (at least here) is a very different kind of marketing which helps cut through the noise. We also don't have to worry about crouded radio and press schedules.
With that said, people are busy and that means that they are not paying as much attention to their inboxes.
So I kind of think it's a draw. If you have the momentum, I wouldn't be afraid to release around the holidays. If you don't, I wouldn't rush to try to get it out just for the holidays.
But like anything, every demographic is different so it's hard to say for certain until you get out there and get some results.
Personally, I typically avoid December or the first week of January for any kind of a launch, but the holidays can be a great excuse for a special promotion.
