Hey John and Insider Circle!
John, you mentioned PPC traffic driving might not be right for me yet until I've got my sales funnel profiting and effective. So, I'd like to do that! I'm assuming when you say sales funnel, you are talking about autoresponder sequences?
I'm a little unsure of how to run my autoresponders for my three different groups of people:
-customers
-new subscribers (subscribed post launch sequence or during launch sequence)
-pre-launch subscribers who haven't bought
I had a great sales funnel in place before the release that went like this:
#1 - immediately - free song
#2 - 4 days later - free song
#3 - 7 days later - fun get to know kat video (your great line about elephant's tongue!)
#4 - 7 days later - blog about song on old album (No Will Power)
#5 - 7 days later - blog about funny show in Brunei
#6 - 7 days later - another blog about song on old album (No Will Power)
#7 - 7 days later - LTO
#8 - 48 hours later - final notice LTO
Then I paused that autoresponder series for the launch and have not started anything else up.
I am trying to figure out a long term- general timeline of emails during launch and non-launch times.
Here's what I am thinking:
1. customers get regular content emails every 2 weeks, go through launch sequence when it's happening.
2. new subscribers - get sales funnel like above but with new EP? this is paused during a launch sequence and they rcv launch sequence emails...and then do i just stop the autoresponders for them since i have now hit them hard?
3. pre-launch subscribers - i should run another LTO for them? when is good to do that?
Generally, I am unsure of my sales funnel/autoresponder sequence/general mailing list emails. Now that people have gone through the launch, and will be going through another launch relatively soon (in 2 months)....
Also, as I am a semi-touring musician - how does this work with tour dates and one call to action per email? FYI: Unfortunately AWeber does not allow you to search within a certain mileage of a zipcode, you can only search for that specific zipcode. The State is a little broad for touring (particularly in CA) and the city format is tricky (For example: Los Angeles consists of a bunch of different "cities" that people may enter into that box). I haven't tried it yet, but I'm thinking the zip code still might be best b/c perhaps you can search zipcode "contains" and then just list the first few numbers of a zip to get an area. Will keep you posted!
Thank you.
Also, how often can you do an LTO? If I have an LTO in my launch and an LTO in my Autoresponder, wondering if I'm hitting too hard.
Thanks for posting this Kat. I've been wondering about the autoresponder sequence myself and am interested to hear John's response...
Your sales funnel is essentially the sales process that you have in place for your prospects. So that would normally mean anything that was automated such as your initial offer, upsell, etc. But it could also include real time promotions if that was something you were doing on a predictable basis. But it's also often just used loosely to mean the entire sales process, automated or otherwise. So it's not exactly about the emails, but they are very close to one and the same.
My best advice is to go back over this training module. It covers it better than I can in a forum comment: https://www.mmmanifesto.com/in.....-musicians
It typically applies to new subscribers but you could have a different sales funnel just for customers if you wanted. The goal there would be to start everything over again with the focus being on an upsell or second product. But it all comes down to the AIDA sales funnel no matter what your doing.
What I would be doing in your shoes is setting up a simple funnel like in the copywriting video which is designed to make that first sale. I'd add product package options and an upsell like you did on your launch. Start driving traffic NOW and get that list as big as you can. Then, when you are ready to launch your next album I would simply send out a few pre-launch emails to warm people up to what was coming, get them excited, increase the bond, etc (like you did with the first launch but maybe a little shorter. The whole thing could be done in two weeks).
When you do the launch for your next album you might segment your list so that you are only emailing people who signed up more than 3 or 4 weeks prior. Otherwise it would seem like you were dropping two emails on top of each other. When it got really close you could just start a new list and do something more like what you did on the initial launch.
And then yes, I'd send out regular content emails at least every two weeks.
But I feel like breaking it up like that makes it sound more complicated than it is.
Keep focused on this...
1. drive traffic all the time, every day, consistently. Build your list.
2. New subscribers get run through a 4 - 7 email series that is designed to create awareness, interest, desire, and action (buy your stuff).
3. Present buyers with an upsell and/or package options.
4. When you get close to your next release you could either kill your autoresponder sequence or just remove the stuff that applies to your old album.
5. When your new album is ready, launch it using an LTO (and you'll probably want to get folks excited about what is coming in the week or two leading up to it.
6. Once the album is live, change up your autoresponder series with emails that support the new album.
As for how often you can do an LTO, totally depends on your relationship with your list. It's really about the balance between your content and your promotions. You just can't have a channel that displays nothing but commercials. I'm just saying this off the cuff so don't take it as gospel, but something like 70% of your content being just valuable content sounds about right.

Thanks John - this is really helpful - going to digest it all now!
No prob. It's a bit tough because it's really the subject matter of an entire course, not just a forum post. Several courses in fact. But hopefully that helps.

Ooh! I want those courses! Ha!:)
Ok, so I am excited about simplifying and trying to set up my lists for the best long term strategy!
Do you think it is best to just have two lists?
-One squeeze page list that goes through autoresponder (Subscriber List)
-One list that comes from the squeeze page list but has bought something (doesn't matter WHICH something) (and just be cool about the fact that they may not make it through the whole autoresponder) (Subscriber turned Customer List)
Right now, I have 6 lists:
1 list is squeeze page (the people who became customers from this list sometimes are unsubscribed, sometimes haven't completed the customer new list process)
1 list is my old list imported to aweber the people who became customers from this list sometimes are unsubscribed, sometimes haven't completed the customer new list process)
1 list is customers from live shows who bought a cd(s)
1 list bought the download only
1 list bought the deluxe download (an upsell (either with tshirt or multiple cds))
1 list is from my VMP page list (This was my VMP page with an opportunity to subscribe to my email list as well, so that I was also getting possible subscribers even after they shared using the VMP - I've since discontinued this list - as I think it would make sense for this to just be the squeeze page list)
What do you think?
Also, I have a good tip to share re: geotargeting! I am requesting zipcode on all of my webforms and my squeeze page is still converting at 30.9% (My Mobile Squeeze page is converting at 37.2% (yay)). Since I am a touring musician and I am trying to send out content emails twice a month, I don't want to send show announcements to everyone....SO...AWeber does not allow you to search for "within __ miles...", but what you CAN do is enter the first 3 numbers of the zipcode "contains" of where you are playing and then you will get people in that area. Hope that is helpful!
Thanks,
Kat
Many thanks Kat! Just checked out your squeeze page... looks awesome! 🙂
Wow this is rich stuff… gonna digest too and review the module. The link got cut off John… which module is it? I see copywriting for musicians… is it that one?

Yeah, sorry. It's the copywriting module.

Hey Kat, I'm a little confused by some of what you're saying here. All i do is basically have one primary funnel for all new leads. When they order something they are automatically moved to a customer list that doesn't have any automated emails in it. Instead I send real time promotions for specific things. With that said, you absolutely could create a new automated funnel for customers, and many people do.
I have many lists but I do that more for traffic segmentation than anything else, so I can watch the stats and see how different things perform. Does that help?

Hey John,
Yes, that helps. Do you recommend having different customer lists depending on which product they buy? (ie. which CD, whether they buy a tshirt, etc.)
Thanks, Kat
I do create multiple product lists but not necessarily for every product. The reason you want to create multiple customer lists is too fold, one so you don't iritate people who already bought something, and one so that you can offer logical follow up offers to a product. But occassionally that might not be nexessary. For example a T shirt. I don't personally invision running a ton of stand alone promotions just for a t-shirt so I wouldn't bother (that's just me), But there is no harm at all in creating a lot of segmentation. You just need to kind of walk yourself through your sales funnel a bit and see what might make sense down the line.

OK, cool. Yeah- definitely. That is what I am figuring out re: setting myself up well for my future sales funnel(s). That makes sense re: tshirt. So, fast forwarding to future promos....I'm thinking if I segment lists for who bought which albums, that there will be some repeats on those lists (people who will be on all lists who bought multiple cds) and as I will want to run promos with each of those lists for the product they didn't buy......trying to figure out how to set that up so it's not too much repetition for those who have bought multiple cds (so they are not getting several offers at once)....how do you make that work? Thanks John!
And one other question about the lists: when you are touring, do you try to make a note of customers emails (the people who bought cds at the show) so that you are putting them on the "customer" list vs. the regular download list so that they are not seeing a promotion for a better deal than the one they got at the show?
I just called AWeber and it is an unforgiving system if you don't set it up correctly the first time!
Thanks!

#5 - 7 days later - blog about funny show in Brunei
#6 - 7 days later - another blog about song on old album (No Will Power)
#7 - 7 days later - LTO
#8 - 48 hours later - final notice LTO
John, that seems like a heck of a long time to ask for a sale. I remember when we talked before you interviewed me, you thought I *might* want to compress things a tad (but it was working well, so you hesitated to actually make that recommendation), but I was already directly asking for a sale by email #4. I was subtle about it in emails #1 through #3. So the first part of my series is:
#1 - immediately - free song (subtle pitch for album)
#2 - 3 days later - free song (subtle pitch for album)
#3 - 5 days later - video (subtle pitch for album)
#4 - 5 days later - LTO (Buy My Album!)
#5 - 2 days later - LTO followup (Buy My Album!)
I'm not saying she should change it. It's just way different than mine. Is her purpose different? Is she risking satisfying people's curiosity too much before asing for a sale?
Kat-Thats what I was saying on the phone to you the other day. As a subscriber, I thought yours was good..but you could have hit me up in shorter intervals and pounce (no pun intended) on my curiousity. Mine is similar to yours Charley..But a little more compressed:
#1 -Immediately: Free Song
#2 -next day: Video
#3 -2 days later: Free Song
#4 -4 days later on a Tuesday: LTO
#5 - 3 days later: LTO Ending
I set the #4 email to go out on a Tuesday so I can send a real time broadcast on Wednesdays to the people who didnt open the first LTO email. I've also started adding links to my album on the first 3 emails whenever I mention it. That just goes straight to my music sales page on my site. Might as well see if I can get them to buy at full price. !?

Dean & Charley,
Thanks so much for sharing your sales funnel. I definitely get what you're saying. I was using curiosity to get people to subscribe on the squeeze page, but then my thought was that I wanted to develop a long term relationship with the subscribers (and court them before asking for sex - ultimately a longer courtship seems to result in more sex) - over the years, I have some "best of" tour stories and pix I think are great content and would love to include to get people caring long term. And then when I've sent them a lot of fun emails, given them all of that free content - songs, stories, pix, ask for the sale around email 9 (with each email being about a week apart) & 10....then 5 more content, another short soft LTO, another 5 emails and then work the house concert upsell into the funnel.
What do you think about that:
-Longer sales funnel?
-Longer wait to go in for the sale?
Would love to hear your opinion too, John!
Thanks.

Hey Charley, this was a launch funnel, not a general funnel. So it was all about warming her list up and building anticipation with people who had been on the list for some time, but never had an album to buy. Different process than an evergreen funnel for sure. I would go into the sale much faster with an evergreen funnel.
