Hola Amigo/as,

Just about ready to start selling my music online and there is one thing that I cannot wrap my small, inadequate mind around. Perhaps someone can enlighten me on a solution if there is one.

So, I've signed up with CD Baby, and I like them. I look forward to selling through them. As we know, they don't sell merch, so we need to set up our own shipping channel anyway, which I've done. (In theory anyway, I haven't tested it).

My question regards the LTO. My ideal set-up would be to have the CD Baby page/widget thing on my website for visitors to see with the opportunity to buy. But, if I do this, then I'm wondering how I am also going to run a limited time offer to new signups. Here's an illustration:

Customer 1:
Signs up for list on squeeze page > checks out store > is prompted to buy > doesn't buy > receives Limited Time Offer.

Customer 2:
Signs up for list on squeeze page > checks out store > buys CD/Download .

I don't want Customer 2 to receive my limited time offer bargain discount if she has already purchased the album at regular price.

Does CD Baby send you the info about your customers? I noticed when I bought John's album download there (of which I am suitably impressed btw but that's neither here nor there) that I don't get redirected anywhere and just get an email that links me to the cd baby download page. Now, I know I gave them my email address, but I don't know if the artist can receive that email address so at the least I could manually move the person from the prospect list to the customer list.

If they don't, then I'll just have to have my own page to sell the regular priced product on (which is not the end of the world, but I'd rather use CD Baby).

Anyone have a solution?

Thanks very much,

Matt

P.S. If anyone wants to really make my day, could you tell me how I can change the background colour of those paypal buttons (not the yellow button, but the square behind it) ? I've tried html coding with background colour, and making my own button, but I just cannot get rid of the grey background colour that surrounds the button.
Thanks again!

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the kind words re: My album.

As far as CD Baby goes, yes, they have a box that the customer can tick to pass on their email address and then CD Baby gives it to you at the end of the day. The only way to run an LTO with CD Baby is to explain to people in your copy that they must tick that button. If you incentive the LTO with either some more free music, or even a cash back bonus, this will likely insure that people take the step. It then requires you to manually enter their name into your customer database and they will have to confirm. But you can customize the confirmation message to correspond with the offer. It's admittedly a pain. But it works.

The simplest solution is to take orders yourself so you can control the process. Right now I'm not actively promoting anything so I'm just running it through CD Baby, but come my next release I will absolutely be running it through my own system. Paypal allows you to redirect (I think you may need a business account) and that is a good free solution. I hope to have a credit card processing solution/shoppingcart solution for musicians within a few months though, that would take care of what you need.

Hey Matt,

When you copy the code for the paypal button and put it on your page, you can actually substitute a different button graphic for the one paypal gives you.  If you designed your own "Add to Cart" button or something, just upload the graphic to your server then put the graphics' location into the button code.  Just find the 'img src=' part of the code and replace paypal's graphic with your graphic's location.

I know you said you've already tried your own button, which makes me think there is some css defining the background color for the box.  Look into the button code and remove anything that indicates "class" or "id" and that should take care of it for you.

Hi Guys,

@john. Ah, OK so it can be incorporated at least so long as I get people to tick the button. Thanks for that. I've tried to set up a few shopping carts already but so far it has only caused my head to explode. I'm just going for the buy now option on my website for now, since I only have a cd and download (no merch) as of yet. Look forward to your next invention John!

@steve Ah, OK I'll try that. Paypal has an option where you can use a custom button in the form on their site and that was where I was inputting the button image. Perhaps that was my mistake, I'll try putting it into the code directly from my page in wordpress instead. If that doesn't work, I'll remove Class or ID stuff. And if that doesn't work, I'll pretend I like a grey box around my button lol.

Thanks for the help!

Matt

If anyone has a solution to the Paypal button thing I swear you will make all of my wildest dreams to come true.

No matter what size button I make, it always adds a tiny grey border around it on the page. All i want is a white background. I can find nothing in the coding that will allow me to fix it. If anyone in this forum has managed to manipulate a paypal button to match the background of your page please tell me how you did it lol.

I have learned/figured out countless tech stuff since joining MMM, but with this little button problem I am truly beaten!

Here is a tutorial on creating a custom Paypal button:

http://www.ehow.com/how_586526.....aypal.html

But what I suspect might be happening here is that your style sheet may be set to automatically include a grey border around all images. Is that a possibility?

Here is a tutorial on removing borders from image links:

http://www.htmlcodetutorial.co.....p_216.html

Let me know if that doesn't solve it, and maybe include a link to the page so we can look at the code.

Hey Matt,

I've been able to do it.  Send me a link to the page and I'll see if I can't spot the code for you with firebug.

Hi Steve,

Here's the link. I'm wondering if it is something like John thought with my theme automatically making the grey borders. I've html-coded the border to zero (at least I think I did but I may have done it wrong). I'm using Thesis.

broken paypal button

Have a look and if you can spot the problem that's great, if not it's not the end of the world.

thanks a lot!

Web design isn't my thing but that looks like something the theme is adding. If it's hard wired it would likely over write your 0 border code. Here is a tutorial for removing teh borders in thesis:http://lowcostwebsitesolutions.....sis-theme/

I would just ask someone in the Thesis support forum. I use Thesis as well and use them all the time. You should have an answer in just a few hours.

I've used that support forum to build the entire site and for some reason it never occurred to me to search in there to resolve this problem. I just did and now I have fixed it. I just added a few lines of text into the custom.css file.

Thanks for your help!

[RESOLVED]

Hi Matt,

The link you posted was a 404 error, but glad to hear you got it sorted out.

An alternative to changing the stylesheet itself, you could simply run an inline style on the button only.  However you sound like it's all good now.
