Selling a demo/lower quality album (first)

Hello all,

I just finished a 14 track album but most of the tracks on the album aren't the best quality in terms of sound.  They sound better than the average demo/worktape but not as good as "radio ready" quality that seems the be the standard.  Still, it's the only thing I have to sell atm.  I've heard John mention selling demos, but it was usually after selling other studio albums or an upsell of sorts.  I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience selling a demo cut right off the bat.  I'm not sure if I should actually call it a demo cut or just sell it as a regular album and wait for listeners to tell me it's not high quality/professional enough.  Sometimes my standards are too high and I don't even know it.  Whatever the case, I do plan on redoing the album in maybe a year or two from now.  I may go to school for sound engineering/music production so I'll have better skills in the future.  But I'd like to start selling now/ at least start building my list.  I know a lot of it depends on genre.  I'm a mix of rnb/soul and singer/songwriter.  So not garage rock or anything like that that usually can get away with a different expectation of sound quality.

Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,
Jordan

Hey Jordan,

I'm a big fan of the "ready, fire, aim" principle. I generally think doing it ok now is better than maybe doing it great in a couple of years. Not always, but generally. That said, I also don't believe in selling sub par quality. While it doesn't matter to me if something is perfect, I need to believe listening to it will be a valuable experience. So as long as that is the case I'd personally proceed. But if the quality is such that people won't enjoy it, them you will struggle no matter what. If you want feedback on the degree of quality, feel free to post a track or a sample.

Hi John,

Thanks for the feedback.  The "listening to it will be a valuable experience." really helped put things in perspective.  That is the case.  No one has complained about the sound quality yet and everyone says they like the music and listen to it multiple times.  One person paid $50 to buy the "demo" album and no complaints came in after they heard it.  So I think you are right that I might just be being too much of a perfectionistic audiophile about it.  I shall proceed with marketing it and should I finish a "studio" version I'll just sell that either as a re-cut album or transition to selling that one first and the "demo" cut later in the funnel.

Thanks,

Jordan

I think that sounds like a good plan Jordan. God luck and keep us posted!
