I almost used SurveyMonkey.com to send a survey to my mailing list about their music buying habits, but then I had second thoughts. I don't want to send my hard earned fans something that might look like I gave or sold their info to an outside company. Has anyone tried this? If you did, what, if any reaction did you get from your fans?

I haven't done it with my fan list, but I have done it with the MMM list. I do plan to do it with my fan list as my next release gets closer and I don't personally have any concern about that at all.
There are all kinds of things you can do to customize the survey itself if you go with the $20 option, but even with the free one, you can still customize the questions so they are conversational instead of corporate.
The most important thing is that you create a very personal email just explaining why you are doing it. I found that it actually really helped. Not only with my business - as I then understood what my list wanted - but also because it got people to engage, thus giving them more of a stake in what I was doing in general.
You can also reward people with a free bonus if you use the $20 option. It allows you to redirect when the survey is done. I wouldn't advertise an incentive though because you don't want people taking it just for the bonus and then answering questions any old way. If you do it, just make it a friendly surprise at the end.
In my opinion, surveys are awesome.

I also think surveys are great. My logo changed quite a bit based on fan input. I didn't use survey monkey, but I simply posted a question in a forum that I created for my street team. It's probably not as unbiased as the survey monkey, but it doesn't have some of the risks that you seem to be concerned about.
Again, I agree with John. I think it's better to ask fans up front what they want, rather than create something and then see if they want it. Seems like you could save a lot of money! 🙂
Thanks Guys, maybe I'll give it a shot pretty soon. I've been experiencing way too many delays getting another CD finished, and my fans are getting anxious. Instead of keeping them waiting I am considering releasing what I have as an EP, or just releasing several singles as MP3 downloads. I think most of my fans are in the age group that still buys CD's, and I am curious how they feel about downloads.

I think surveys are cool. And its a nice way to get feedback from the people who are less likely to post of FB or comment on a blog post. And, its an opportunity to show your subscribers that you care what they think.
Hey Greg..
Writing as I think here...I think it was you who mentioned Kickstarter or some other kind of fan funded project a month or so ago?? Just an idea...probably something you can handle without Kickstarter...And depending on where you are with your recording, you could offer a pre-release sale where your fans get a digital download of the tracks you're done with. You can use the pre-release funding to finish the album. Gotta make sure you put enough money aside for shipping the album to the pre-release buyers.
Just an idea.

Hi Dean,
I do plan on trying Kickstarter, but I want to wait until I have a finished product in the can before I do. From what I have seen, and also suggested by Kickstarter's guidlines, people are more likely to fund a project that has some definite value, such as a finished CD that is ready for duplication, as opposed to someone just asking for funds so they can make a CD. "I want to make a CD" only has your good intentions as a value. "I want to duplicate my CD" proves that you have an actual value added product and the money has a very good chance of being used for it's intended purpose.
Your idea of a pre-release sale of the tracks I already have is something I hadn't thought about. That might be better than releasing an EP, and then having to start all over again with new stuff for a full length CD. So many options to choose from!

Hey Greg,
I just thought I'd chime in on the survey question. I've used a survey to my mailing list for the 1,000 Fan Formula report - so it's not the same as a fan list. I've also been straight forward about offering a bribe for people who take the survey. Having said that, it's a very small amount of people who take the survey - but all of them have left honest responses. I have multiple choice options and at least two where the respondents can put answers in their own words and they do so for the most part.
Surveys are great because you get a peek right into the way your followers think - at least those who bother to take it.
So I agree with John, be honest and straightforward with why you're giving the survey and you can bribe them (or not) if you want. Incidentally - I used a site called ecustomersurvey.com - it's not much to look at, but it's 100% free and allows you to specify a redirect link at the end where you can deliver your freebie if you choose to go that route. It allows for some customization and the price is right!
Thanks for all your suggestions and ideas guys. You all seem to be in favor of surveys, so that makes me feel better about trying it. I'll look into ecustomersurvey.com too Mike. There sure are a lot of resources out there!

I haven't personally done a survey this way but I've seen some people simply create a survey with Google Docs. I think Survey Monkey is better because you can redirect after it's completed and turn the survey into a thank you promotion, plus you get handy printouts of the results, but it's another way to go if you wanted something that felt more organic.

Hey Greg, I signed up to your list a while back and never got a second email from you... I always check my spams... I got the Faded Old Black song and never heard from you again... you may want to see what's going on here.
Take care! Love this song... Whare you're from? I love your accent...

Hi Isabelle,
Hmmm, that's not good! I will check into it and see what's up. I just send out a newsletter yesterday to my entire Email list. Thanks for letting me know! How long ago did you subscribe?
Glad you like the song too! I am from the Pacific Northwest, born and raised in Seattle, Wa. and I now live on the Columbia River, about 2 hours from Portland, Oregon. I used to think that people from this part of the country didn't really have much of an accent, until one day I was performing for a bunch of Australians who had just come off of a cruise ship. We were having way to much fun trying to teach each other how to talk, and they were trying to get me to sing with an Aussie accent. When I heard them trying to talk like me, I realized how different I must have sounded to them. I tend to pick up little bits of accents without even realizing it, and still about a year later I have a hard time saying "Australia" without it sounding a bit strange.
BTW, I just put a video of a live version of Faded Old Flag on YouTube. Here's a link if your interested

Australian people do have a strong accent... Loll! I met this guy on a trip in one of our canadian provinces and he came from there... We had lots of fun! I'm french from a very french part of the country... I'm one of the 10% who decided to learn english out here!
With that said, I'll sign up again to your email list and see who it goes from there...
Good talking to you!
