Hi John,

It appears there is a relatively new feature in FB ads under Optimization & Delivery section for "Bid Strategy" which gives you the option to set "Set a cap" .. have you worked with this feature? Are there any case studies or resources here on the use of this anywhere I can access?

Cheers.. Dino :~)

Hey Dino,

I don't use that feature much, but it's certainly an option.

The issue is that the way bid capping works is that it creates a fairly narrow window for the algorithm, in which it will only send you traffic/conversions that fall within a range that is close to your bid cap, and as such, it has a tendency to sometimes just crap out and suddenly you see your reach just stop. At least this is how it has been in the past. It's possible they have made improvements.

I did recently hear about a case study in which an ad firm tested that option against the regular "get me the best price possible option and the regular option one out over bid capping.

So for now, it seems like bid capping is a good idea that has a lot of issues. But they make so many changes so fast that I would not be shocked to learn that it was working better now. How well it works might also really be affected by the size of your budget.

It's definitely something you could play with. If you do, let us know how it works for you.

For my money, I am sticking with letting Facebook try and get me the best price possible. At least for now.

thx for that response John. I'm not sure I want to spend my budget on the nuances of this kind of testing.. although I recently relaunched a campaign that had previously run at a subscriber cost of between $1.30-$2.50.. and when I relaunched the campaign it spent $12 before i got my first subscriber.. which made me wonder about the use this cap feature in a situation like that where too much of the budget gets spent before the first conversion kicks in.. so many variables at play with all this stuff.. :~)

It's true. There is a lot going on here and advertising is not for the faint of heart. It can be rough when a campaign gets off to a slow start. Bid-capping may very well work for you, but I haven't had much luck with it. But as I said, I have not played with it all that recently and it's possible they've addressed the issue I mentioned. If you do try it, let me know how it goes for you.
