Hey John,

I've been thinking of ways to enhance deliverability and engagement on my funnel content. One thing I have been looking into is SMS marketing. I think this would be a great way to improve engagement by having almost instant access to your fans. People check their phones way more than their emails.

A potential problem I could see here is people might be less inclined to give their phone number to a stranger than their email. Even if this is the case I think it could be very useful if you used a system like this for those who are already on your mailing list. Having already gone and built a relationship with these people on your list might make them more open to the idea. It would be awesome to have you favorite artists number in your phone to contact anytime.

I know of one artist using this approach and it's working extremely well for him. His name is Ryan Leslie and he put together his own system called Superphone. It's a mobile app and it has quite a bit of features.

Is this something you have looked into? It's starting to become quite popular in more traditional marketing circles and I'm curious to see how it could work with what we are doing here. This seems like it could be a very powerful way of building and maintaining the relationship with our fans.

Hi Nicholas,

I did play around with SMS marketing way back in 2011. Here's ancient post on the MMM blog: https://www.musicmarketingmani.....musicians/

2011 is when SMS marketing really took off and most have moved away from it because of lower conversions and privacy laws. It also has the ability to really make people mad if done wrong.

That said, I think there is a place for it for actively touring artists. There would be few things more powerful than sending a text message to people the day of a show to say something personal like "Hey Firtsname, I'm Joe here from XYZ. I'm going to be performing in your neck of the woods tonight and I wanted to invite you down to the show. There are still tickets available and you can grab them here http://link.com".

However, to my mind this strategy is best reserved for real fans (people that actually care about your music). So I'd be more inclined to set something like this up and run it almost like a promotion, in which you invite people to specifically get on the phone list for the sole purpose of getting alerts for live shows and album releases. But I would never abuse that and send messages too directly.

That's my personal opinion about SMS marketing and where it should sit in one's music marketing toolbox.

Hope that helps.
