But I'm guessing these are comments that say generic things like "Love this post, it's really inspiring"... kinda thing?

Those are almost always spam. The tell is that there is usually a link added to the optional website link that wordpress offers them, and it will not be a personal site but rather some generic business. Often the email address doesn't feel quite organic either.

I always mark those as spam or else the bots that are feed them up will keep doing so.
