Hey Brian,

Yeah man, that Raul Midon is COMPLETELY up your alley. I tried finding him in targeting as well but had no luck. Facebook is funny like that. Not sure what the rhyme or reason is to who shows up and who doesn't.

I would actually try emailing them through your ad manager and ask why you can't target him and see if there is any way they can help you be able to. I wouldn't be surprised if it was as simple as pressing a button on their end. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they were no help at all.

When I was entering him, one thing that did come up in the suggestions was Karl Denson. He didn't strike me as a dead ringer, but I saw some similarities, and because FB seems to see a similarity between him and Raul Midon, I would certainly try that as a target audience and see how it performed.

But yeah, anything you can do to advertise with,m open up for, or just generally connect with Raul Mdion's audience would seem to be right on the mark. I haven't heard anyone that struck me as more similar to you than him.

Let me know what FB says/does.

Yeah man, thats what I thought too, like spot on. I tried to send a message to FB from the ads manager but I think I ended up posting my question in the "Help Community." I'm not sure how to message FB directly.

In the meantime, man check out this other artist:

Not quite as spot on as Raul Midon IMO, but I can target him. Ironically he's only got 25,000 likes or so. One thing I was thinking of doing is running a video ad solely to his audience, making a custom audience of the 25% watched folks, and then making a lookalike audience out of that. I will also target Karl Denson and I'll let you know what FB says/does about targeting Raul Midon. Thanks John.

Cool. I can see what you mean about the guy in the video, but for me it's not nearly as spot on. Mostly because his vocal style is quite different, at least in the 20 seconds I listened to.

If you go to your ad manager and click on help in the upper right hand corner you should see a "contact us" link first in the drop down. Below that is the community link. You definitely want to contact them directly.

Totally, the vocals are a defining factor for most anyone and for me its that quick scatty thing I do naturally.

RE: FB help I made a quick screen share video of my attempt at finding the FB direct message center. This link will download the vid to your comp:

https://recordings.join.me/ROD.....GUZRfS1jUw

The sound's pretty choppy but it gets across the point, which is that I'm not finding a way to directly email them. I went to help and then the contact us in the dropdown.

Lol don't mean to get bogged down in details. I just couldn't find it. Thanks for all your help man!

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the video. I see what you are saying. When I click on "creating adverts" I get an additional option at the bottom of the screen. See attached. Looks like they have made some new changes (yet again) and are making the email option available to just certain advertisers.

I'm having a hard time solving this for you because anytime I explore options I am seeing things you don't necessarily see. Try doing some googling about how to email Facebook advertising support and ask the question in the support community as well. Try to find out why some advertisers can email and some can't. See if anyone offers an email option to those that don't have it in the support tab. Lets start there. Let me know if you have any luck.

Hey John,

First things first, thank you for offering to reach out to FB support on my behalf. I really appreciate it, that is very cool of you. Before you offered to do that, I wrote my original post yesterday which is below - I figured I'd just leave it and edit the post to just say thanks at the top, but here's what I originally wrote about my research if its still of any interest:

So I did some research and the best thing i found was from a blog called Advertisement @ https://www.advertisemint.com/.....vertisers/

It empathized with the FB contact problem, and gave 2 options for advertisers to contact FB -

Option 1: to fill out a Contact Our Support Team form at https://www.facebook.com/busin.....2973461773

I tried that but it says Sorry, that page is not available.

Option 2. To email them at advertise@fb.com which I did, so I'm currently on deck for a response. (I did hear back and it was a bunk email addy)

Beyond that I went to the FB help community and at the top of the page it said, "Run a search of previously asked questions before posting a new one", so I dug around in the community and found a tab called Top Questions. On the 1st page of Top Questions 3 out of 7 top questions were people asking, "Can I directly email or chat with FB support?". All 3 questions sparked quite a passionate comment thread. One guy said he'd spend 10K with FB and still couldn't speak with them. A FB Help Team member addressed one of the meatier threads and said something along the lines of, "Most questions have answers in the Help Community Forums and FAQ sections, and we're still testing chat support".

My hunch is that FB is making it challenging for Everyday Joe advertisers to reach them, and personally I kinda understand. I mean they're arguably the best/largest ad platform in the world, and they'd probably have their hands quite full if they opened their arms to speak to everyone with big ideas, trials and tribulations.

On a lighter note, I remember you saying in a pretty recent FB ads lesson that MMM does not pop up in targeting, but I see that it now does \m/

I went ahead and emailed FB and will let you know what they say.

MMM has actually shown up as a targeting option for a few years. It's been a bummer actually because now a lot of competitors target my audience. I can always tell who because I'll get a relative or friend, who is not in the music industry, sending me links. I never thought about that negative aspect of growth. Oh well. Good problems to have I guess.

Thank you John, I appreciate that a lot.

I must be imagining you saying that recently, my mistake. I hadn't thought of that particular price you have to pay for being successful, I hear you. But while they are interesting, I wouldn't be too bummed about those competitors. Perhaps this is naive, but I just feel like true value is a rare, unique thing that cannot really be imitated or substituted.

No problem Brian. I'm still waiting on the response. I imagine I'll hear after the weekend.

And thanks for the kind words. I ultimately agree. But less competition is still nice 🙂

Hey, so I heard back from Facebook. Looks like the responded pretty quick actually, but I just didn't see the email in my overly crowded inbox. Here's what they had to say.

1. When a Page appears in the Interest Targeting, it becomes a common topic, an interest to be exact. Facebook will estimate the reach based on from information users have added to their Timeline, keywords associated with the Pages they like or apps they use, ads they have clicked on and other similar sources.
There is a coincidence to see your fans in this group, but the reach is largely made up by other people who have expressed their interests with the page, not necessarily like the Page.
This distinction has to be made clear to clients who:
A. Request to have their Page added as an Interest
B. When they enquire on why their "Page Fans are being targeted by other advertisers"

2. Users may not have the option to reach out to the email support team if they are not currently advertising. Hence they can try reaching out to us using the Help Center Report Contact Forms: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/164405897002583

The first part is confusing but it sounds like they are saying that they determine a page to be an "interest" when they see enough organic discussion for it to trigger something in their algorithm.

In terms of contacting them, it sounds like they are just saying you need to physically have ads running in order for that direct contact option to appear. Good for all of us to know. Let me know if that solves it for you.

Hell yeah! That totally solves it, thanks again for reaching out to them man, I'm happy everyone can benefit from this info. I'll also check out that Help Center contact form if needed.

On another note, this is some geeky stuff but I came across an Apple Music page of an artist where you can listen to 20 seconds of each song off this guy's album. It's kind of like streaming because it automatically starts playing the next song after the 20 second preview is up.

Are there any WordPress plug-ins you know of that can do this? Like I said, pretty geeky but just checking. It looks and feels kinda slick. Here's the page to show you what I mean:

Hi Brian,

Steve here.  It looks like they are using both an Apple Music Widget and Spotify widget.

Look into Wordpress plugins.  You might find a slick player plugin that will allow you to itemize and playlist the samples.

Let us know how you make out.

Brian,

Thanks so much for sharing your process and ideas! I love what you are doing and have been inspired by both your efforts and John's input.

I felt to mention that I am not a fan of hip hop but I LOVE everything you have posted.... My immediate thought when I listened to your first two song tracks was that it sounds like Blues Traveler may have been an influence... I love blues traveler. they have a similar witty humor and sometimes sarcasm that shows up in your music.

you have collected a new fan =D

you are awesome and my hat is off to you

Hey Steve,

thanks for getting geeky with me, a minor detail but if ya never ask you'll never know I guess. To stay on that geeky note, are there any functional differences between a FB music page and a FB community page? And if I wanted to can I change to a community page after I've already been established as a music page?

Hey Aaron,

I appreciate everything you said man. Also I had not thought of the Blues Traveler connection before, but in the fast vocals and occasional, slightly subversive sarcasm ya, I can see that. I suppose there could also be a musical comparison, not because of the harmonica obviously, just in having a quirky lead instrument. Although that may be a stretch.

Thanks for your input man, its easy making music for appreciative folks like yourself, cheers.

Hi Brian,

I unfortunately haven't played around with community pages, to see how they differ, or whether they can be used in conjunction with music pages.

Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Hey Brian,

I wouldn't mess with community pages for your purposes. They are meant to be something more akin to a wiki. A regular artist page is all you need. I also don't think you can run ads from, or target, a community page, which is important for your business.

Hey John, thank you for the feedback. I was just checking on that question since it was rolling around in my mind. Another one is RE the VMTK. It looks like mine is displaying kinda weird, I put a player on a sales page template to show you what I mean:

http://www.brianrogersmusic.com/vmtk/

The code for it seems normal but here it is in case you spot anything wrong:

<iframe src="https://viralmusicplayer.com/short/2kd" width="365px" height="74px" frameBorder="0" allowtransparency="true"></iframe>

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the link.

I'm not seeing anything weird about it.  The player looks fine, the song streams and the download dialogue opens without issue.

I'm using Firefox browser.  Can you take a screenshot of the issue and send it to support@musicmarketingmanifeso.com ?

Thanks, I'll look at what you've got.

Hey Brian,

It's displaying weird for me in Chrome. I'll forward this to my partner/developer and see what can be done.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
