I wanted to make a request to all members to reply to this post if you have the time and share out what is working the best for you in getting subscribers to buy your music.   I'm still developing my plan and getting the kinks out of my system and getting ready to hit facebook marketing.  So far I have gotten several subscribers for free using social media but not that many just sharing on blogs so the free marketing plan has been a bit slow.  If any of you folks are getting great traffic on the free marketing path I'd love to know whats working for you.   And if the facebook traffic is doing well for you I'd love to know that too.   Just thought I might get some feedback from some fellow MMM insider members to this post to share what is working for you.   Thanks in advance

Hey Dwain,

While you wait from some feedback from other members I thought I'd just chime in and say that I have moved away from free traffic generation techniques completely. So much so that no specific free traffic strategy was taught in MMM 4.0 at all. Free traffic is still totally possible, but the methods have just become difficult and time consuming. The easiest strategy for free traffic seems to be the Twitter strategy that you will find here in the IC. That said, it's very slow going and I much prefer Facebook advertising. I feel that paid advertising really needs to be part of every musicians end game.

Having trouble with your marketing? Wish you could have an experienced direct-to-fan marketing expert look over your actual campaigns, music, or content and offer feedback? Or perhaps you’re just looking for a little one-on-one assistance so you can ask questions that pertain to your specific goals and get a second, more experienced, perspective? John:

That's good to know.   I'm just getting started with that by going by the MMM3 page that I subscribe to.   I kind of figured after studying the free traffic info and playing around with it that it was going to be difficult to get a lot of people to go to the site.  Of course I will still try to get people there while working on the facebook adds.

Just want to echo what John said. Twitter works well, but is slow. I've been getting REALLY good conversions with Twitter because I am striving to be AUTHENTIC in my communications and strategic in who I follow. Now that automatic DMs are history, people are reading their DMs again, will respond positively, and are better pre-qualified than Facebook ad subs in *my* recent experience. So, for me, five Twitter subscribers might be worth 10 Facebook Ad subscribers. But it's frickin' slow and not really scalable. And the goal is to be faster and scalable. 🙂

Advertising is where it's at. That is faster and scalable. My suggestion to the beginner is to earn money with Twitter subs, and use that money to put into advertising. John and I were chatting about this today, and one thing to keep in mind is that what might seem like a "loss" might actually be a "gain." In other words--and I'm just throwing numbers out, but I think they are approximately correct--I spent $2,000 on advertising recently. I didn't immediately make all that money back. Maybe I initially made back 60 or 70 cents on the dollar. And then I did a crowdfunding effort and earned $4,000. I *way* more than doubled my money.

After saying all that, I have a wife that is very... um... I need to say this in a way that honors her, because she is wonderful... but she tends to look at what is happening in the short term. She doesn't like me spending $2,000 on what she thinks is a "maybe." So, if you are in a similar place, I TOTALLY "get" that!!!

Best wishes to you.

John O? Any comments on what I've said? You are much better at this than I! Cool

I think you've said it well Charley. With an approach like this we are basically buying an audience that we can monetize over time. When you spend $1000 on a guitar you usually don't make your money back after one show. But fast forward 5 years and that guitar will likely be responsible for tens of thousands of dollars in income.

It's not all that dissimilar with advertising.

Charlie:

I just saw your reply to my message, haven't been on forum for a few weeks.   What did you mean by a crowdfunding effort?  Is that a strategy from John that I missed.  I'm getting started with facebook adds but I have been trying to understand all of the angles before I submit to putting money into the adds, but I'm just about there.  However I don't think I'm going to invest the amount that you did starting out.

Thanks for your input and feedback and I welcome any other ideas that you might have.  Keep in touch.

Hi Dwain,

Crowdfunding is getting your fans involved in raising money for a purpose. It could be for an album, a tour, radio promotion, etc. Typically an artist uses a platform like PledgeMusic or Kickstarter or Indiegogo. The basic idea is that a fan backs a project at different gift levels--say $35, $50, $100, $250, etc--and they get a "perk" in return. Google a couple of the platforms that I mentioned and you'll get the idea.

The thing that's of paramount importance is that you have to have fans on an email list to make it work. If you just sling something like this on the internet, and don't send people to it, it won't succeed.

I just used that crowdfunding effort as an example of how things that don't make sense in the short term can make sense in the long-term. We are using advertising to win fans who will support us over the long haul. In my case, I didn't initially make all my money back in my funnel. But, the value of my fans became apparent when I did crowdfunding for radio promotion. Make sense?
