Five weeks after release to radio, I'm #6 on Billboard's New and Active list. I've been told that, for new artists who chart on BB, this typically takes months (and not weeks). Number 6 on the New and Active list means that I've only got to go up 6 positions to chart. So, unless things don't go as expected, I should have some good news in a couple weeks!
For those who haven't been following my journey, my email list paid for all the radio promo for this single. My purpose in doing this is to gain more social proof so I can get better gigs. I'm sure the social proof will also help with my list building and other marketing.
I'm getting medium to heavy rotation on a number of stations, and I haven't noticed an increase in music sales. Just FYI...
Hey Charley,
That's great. Everything you are saying is on point. For example, with Janiva Magness (who is a blues artist) she was #1 at blues radio and at one point had 8 of the tracks on her album in the #40 at blues radio. I don't know that it generated anything at all in terms of sales. However, it really helps increase her brand's profile which leads to better gigs, and more people coming to those gigs.
People who listen to Jazz radio will hear your name, and then recognize it when you are performing at the local jazz club, and be more likely to come out. Likewise, it gives you a great calling card with the venues. They will certainly take you more seriously when you can mention radio and chart positions.
I know you know all this, I mention it more for others that might be reading the thread.
Great Job!

Thank you so much, John. One of the reasons Janiva is inspiring to me is, like me, she isn't a spring chicken! You've watched me for a while, so you you've seen both my successes and failures. But I haven't quit. And I'm about to have another success and take another step up.
There are easier ways to make money, but this is what I love! I'll let you know when I hit the charts. I know I'm going to!!
That's awesome man. The mantra around the Blue Elan camp (Janiva's current record label) is to just keep taking steps forward for the brand. Where are we now, what's the next step, how do we get there. It sounds like that's exactly what you're doing. Go get'm!
